@Mfischer888 A stereotypical behaviour caused by under-stimulation and one caused by f.x. stress can be completely similar. The different types of stereotypical behaviours are often due to the species of the animal, or the variety of possible behaviours in its enclosure.
You can rarely tell what has caused the stereotypical behaviour, and no matter how great a zookeeper you are, you'll NEVER be able to tell the precise reason from a 51 sek. movie clip, of the behaviour only.
@snarsh90 And how would you know about the treats? I've been working with racoons for over three years, and I can tell the difference between a racoon reaching for a treat, and a racoon performing stereotypical behaviour! A Racoon would very rarely jump like that for food, because it's not really part of their natural behaviour. They would climb for it instead.
Can't figure out what the attraction is for them to keep coming down my chimney. Nothing for them there, but now a trap. ;) When the weather calms, a screen will be placed up there to prevent all critters from entering!
agreed. I saw an animal losing his mind when I visited a small zoo. I totally forget what the animal was now. So long ago. His enclosure was too small. I was heartbraking.
@sashamus Zookeepers would be able to differentiate between stereotypical behavior caused by under-stimulation and stereotype behavior wich is caused by a similar source.
@GoldieGlitters how very ignorant. A lot of zoo's are there to protect endangered animals from extinction in the wild. The fact they are open to the public is because they need money to help look after them.
@MrJishjashjosh A zoo serves no such purpose, sanctuaries serve that purpose. Zoos for the large part have no conversational use, because they breed animals without the intention of reintroducing them into the wild. Instead they keep animals in enclosures which provide nothing near as much stimulation as they require. Zoos are prisons for animals, it is not ignorant to say so, it's more ignorant to disagree, because it shows you're forming an opinion without researching the information.
@elstoner666 What about Zoos like one of Chicago's and the UK's Paignton Zoo, where Animals are kept in their natural environment - or an environment as close as possible?
@elstoner666 actually many zoos have animals that are rescues. they would be dead otherwise. i know the baltimore zoo has mostly rescues, as well as the national aquarium
@cheifinondogia Understimulation is when the animals get ''bored'' (to use a human term) due to their natural needs not being satisfied (their enclosure might be too small, their food too easily collected (in nature animals use a lot of time foraging (looking for food), maybe the animals are stressed, and so on). They react by doing their stereotypical behaviors (in this case, jumping and 'walking' up the walls), beacause this releases dopamine in their brains, which is a very satisfying feeling
I'm sure there's a somewhat larger cage around the shown box but its still captivity. I'm no activist hippie but still the symptoms are clearly indicating their condition. Laughing at this is the same as people laughing at a person having an epilepsy seizure. I don't blame them since it may understandably appear funny to some people, it's just a matter of ignorance that can be fixed.
They're just marking their territory o.O And I think this is the place where they sleep. Raccoons like tiny places where they can cuddle up to each other. Of course there has to be a bigger enclosure around...
at first i thought they were just leaving their scent on the wall. ya know marking their territory or leaving theire "business card"? like cats do..especially if the spot theire marking already has someone elses mark which they are interested in...
but then again i dont know how raccoons are supposed to act.
If they are in an open enclosure that's great. From what was visible in the video it looked like they were pretty closed in. Sorry for making a bad assumption.

just like in those rap music club videos where the horny fuckers are always lip-locked on the couch while the semi-naked chicks are busy grinding and bootyshaking along the walls.
It is enclosed somehow-normal raccoons in there own environment don't engage in neurotic behavior like that, I'm a volunteer with Animal Control and i've got a family of 6 that hang out in my backyard everynight. It could be some sort of mesh, or that this little "house" is part of a larger enclosure. The film is a little grainy so it could easily be some sort of mesh. THey definitely cannot leave if they want.
I agree, this video broke my heart. This is a common phenomenon among all animals living in captivity especially when they don't have enough space.
Check wikipedia under "Stereotypy" before you have your laughs.

Irrelevant. They're not kept in that all the time, they're free to get out and wander around any time they like.

Yeah it was a horrible one and I still managed to be more observant than you and realize the cause of the behavior. Touché.
