It is such a beautiful and amazing process. It's incredible to watch how much time and care goes into the removal and conservation of each mural. It is so importportant to preserve these works of art. There needs to be more people like this taking such care into paintings. You guys do such amazing work!
@SaulBourgy Saul, I know exactly what you mean by feeling abhorred. I also would leave murals in the place they were created and I feel an ethical compelling need to do so. But, like you said, "saving art" sometimes means getting it out of the building. The last mural I inspected in Florida is in a building that is being demolished because it is so far overrun with black mold there is no way to save the building. So, before demolition gets started, the historical mural needs to come out.
@MaxLutzhf That was an interesting episode. You should have heard the reaction when they got the piece of mural in the mail... "We didn't know you could do that!" It turned the lay suit around for the artist... and I was the expert witness for Shell. But Shell was happy with my work as it helped to get the suit settled.
@LaurelEvansf Laurel, thanks for leaving a comment. That was an interesting project! I was please to find out later that our safe removal of the murals kept them in good shape for reinstallation someplace else, later.
Scott conserved some very rare, large outdoor murals from 1936 at Fair Park, where he helped educate the public on their importance. This video is another excellent example of his contributions to his profession and to contractors, owner, architects and others who may be involved in the conservation of murals, by sharing his knowlege in such a clear and informative way.
@nancytmccoy Thanks Nancy. I enjoyed working with your firm on the enormous project with the City of Dallas. BTW, those of you reading this... Nancy McCoy's firm, Quimby McCoy Architects in Dallas, is an exceptional firm for architectural/historic preservation restoration, project oversight etc.
Scott, thanks for sending me the link to this video. Well done video. I still think back on our project in Dallas and how your ability to deal with the City of Dallas, the project architect and consultants got us through some very sticky problems and allowed us to stay on schedule for the project. Hope we get to work again together.
The money we spent to have you come out and assess our needs was the best money we ever spent. We have enjoyed working with you very much. Thanks for doing such a complete, professional job. Now we can accurately plan our future budgets.
Thanks Sue for your comments. We enjoyed working with you too. I thought we made a good team... the project required a good team of professionals didn't it?
I also vouch first hand for you and your firms skill when my staff and I from West Lake Conservators worked side by side with you removing all the murals from the Old Main Library in San Francisc included in your video. You do not exaggerate the problem solving we encounter or the necessary planning these projects dictate to remove and treat successfully.
Thanks Scott for this clear presentation of the variety of difficulties we conservators face when removing murals from walls and the rising cost due to unnecessary damage when removed improperly. We also have encountered every one of these problems over the years in murals my firm West Lake Conservators has removed and or treated.
