@MrSquidward9 Well, it does work the same basic was as a piano. It's just that the 'hammer' isn't striking the string with nearly the same amount of force, and the string isn't nearly as tough or tense. Beyond that it's actually a very similar concept.
This thing is basically a harpischord where you hit the strings yourself instead of press keys that do it. Awesome instrument.
Hey! I never thought of playing that way-that's great--thanks for posting this-I'm still learning too, but this was pretty darned good!! all the best to ya
I love this arrangement. You play well. Is there any way you could create sheet music of this arrangement to share? Or even sell? Or perhaps you could do a youtube video teaching us how to play this song? I keep watching this video to try to learn how to play, but it goes too fast and I am way lost....
Ok, just keep it in mind! There aren't too many instructional videos for the hammered dulcimer on youtube, and I think a lot of people would benefit from it. And we'd love to hear more tunes!!
Yeah I got it used on eBay from a person who was new to HD and thus saved a little money... but the Jerry Reed Smith dulcimers are amazingly nice... this was my 3rd HD... when I started learning I had a 12/11 etc...
Oh that's so haunting... I love what you've done with the song! I find when I play this on the harp it becomes too slow over the long notes, adding a moving/repeated bass linereally helps. I may have to borrow the idea. ^^
Beautiful playing, beautiful dulcimer My husband and I both have dulcimers, took lessons for a short while and quit. We are going to start again although I'm sure it will be awhile (if ever)before we can play like you. Any suggestions on learning? Thanks for the post.
The soundboard is spruce but the color is from the redish stain on it...not sure if it has a name... You can try contacting Song of the Wood and asking them what they use.
Great arrangement! I am also a hammer dulcimer player and have a JRSI love the tone of his instruments. I have arranged this same tune several different ways. originally I tried to do it like Simon and Garfunkel but their intro was not working on the dulcimer. keep up the good work!
I have GOT to STOP watching HD videos where someone is playing a Jerry Reed Smith. What is that, a 4.5 octave? Simply STUNNING! Oh, and your playing is very good too! :)
Hehe thanks... It is a 4 octave concert master... 3.5 chromatic. It is a beautiful instrument... I managed to get it second hand from someone online who had just bought it and then decided to sell it...so it was like new. :)
A wonderful rendition! - Floor van Staarlendam

I've already listened to this five times in a row now. This arrangement is tops. If you're worried your timing is off, don't. It's beautiful.

What kind of dulcimer is this? What company made it?
mysticblack1111 6 months ago
@mysticblack1111
It is a 4 octave 3.5 chromatic Concertmaster by Jerry Reed Smith. You can find his website and dulcimers for sale at his website at: SongOfTheWood

@mcomet (for some reason it commented on an old account that I deleted a long time ago)
But anyway... Holy crap, over $2,000? That's a bit expensive.

Could this arrangement be pulled off on a standard 15/14 dulcimer?
brockwilliam 2 years ago
Yes without the extreme bass notes on this dulcimer... I had originally come up with it on a 15/14.
