The whole point of car design is to enlarge and lengthen the time of impact to soften the blow and draw out the deceleration process. chillsie you are half right. in physics this type of force would be termed " negative acceleration " as the acceleration is in the opposite direction to the velocity. ie you are very briefly accelerating while the car (velocity ) is slowing down

@WhoaItsNanaj It isn't about crashing into a concrete block in middle of the road, it's about crashing headlong into another car, and/or loosing control and sliding yourself headlong into barriers on the side of the highway. The idea is to see how much impact force the chassis can handle. Basically if you're going 30MPH or less in a SMART car you'll survive. However anything above that, and there's just not enough crumple zone to decelerate the crash. Me, I'll take my LTD.

it wouldnt appear the cage works at all, your leg room is included in the crumple zone, so sure, your abdomen will be protected but your legs would need amputation, also if i was looking for safety I would want the car thats going to have a large time of impact, reducing the acceleration in a crash, ie. a longer car, not a shorter one.
