Great to have my eyes opened to an excellent union song. I am a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Forgers and Helpers. If it weren't for good people like the Reese's we wouldn't have the benefits we are so accustomed to today. Thanks goes out to all the good union men and women that came before me.
I said nothing in support of GM or any other big business. And because corporations are corrupt does that justify corruption on the part of unions?
Modern unions exist mostly to support the union bosses (the "Cadillac insurance plans" are not for the rank and file)-- unions are part of the reason workers no longer have companies to employ them. Unions demand (more money, more benefits, fewer hours, and protect corrupt employees) this is part of the reason business went to go to China.
Great work. I like the traditional style with the noter. I'd heard this song and figured it was written by Woody Gutherie or Pete Seeger. Thanks for posting. We don't hear songs like this much anymore. Thanks for sharing.
Good to hear you sing and play the dulcimer. They go well together. I have known this song since I was a boy, and was grapped by the Folk Revival, though living in Denmarks. My parents early on bought a few records with Pete Seeger and Joan Baez, and the came Dylan, and the i got to know Woody Guthrie, Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs etc.etc.etc. And on and on my interest for american folk music grew from there.
Nice job! Great to hear someone sing to the dulcimer. I have always like those old union songs and feel a kinship to these good folks. However, I resent the way modern labor unions who have acted in such a disgusting manner and attitude (auto union workers for example) use these old songs as support for there case today. But that's politics -- hard to keep it out thought because its a "political song". Great music though anyway.
Yes, it is truly disgusting the way the UAW and other dying unions have clung to the notion of leveraging the collective power of labour to get a better shake for workers. Especially as companies like GM have always acted in such a noble, dignified manner, always in altruistic deference to the greater good. Thank God these fine companies continue to ship the country's industrial base off to union-free countries like China, so we don't have to witness unpleasant disputes.
i grew up listening to florence's version as a child in wv i absolutely love your version as well!
