  • When the 1990 movie 'Memphis Belle' was filmed in England, a total of five B-17's were utilized. For most of the flying scenes and exterior shots, David Tallichet's B-17G out of California was used as the Belle. A few select flying scenes utilized another of the B-17Gs, England's 'Sally B' as the Belle. Both aircraft were reworked for the film to appear to be B-17F models, correct for the the actual Memphis Belle. 'Sally B' is identified by the 'hook' antenna just forward

    the radio room hatch.

  • @madcitymcflyer

Long story short. The plane was in the movie as the Memphis Belle.

One side of the plane is currently painted up as the Memphis Belle. The other side is painted up as the Sally B.

A significant portion of the interior shot were also made using a mock up in a sound stage.

    Some CGI was also used.

  • its the Sally B i have a picture of the plane at my wallpaper for my computer

  • @MegaCobra14

Er, I think that you're conffusing fact and fiction.

The Sally B was used to represent the Memphis Belle during filming in UK for the movie Memphis Belle. It was repainted and modified slightly for the film. The actual original Memphis Belle is at Wright-Patterson.

  • Tis is B-17 pink lady, not memphis belle

  • Not according to the nose art, it isn't.

  • the memphis belle has a picture of a woman in a red dress standing up, the pink lady had a picture of a woman lying down, that plane would be the pink lady

  • This is the REAL LIFE plane that played the Memphis Belle in the film. It IS the Memphis Belle, but it's not painted up using the same colors as it was in the movie.

In real life, this is the Sally B.

  • @worldview2007 this is a B-17 -G. lower nose turret. the Belle is a B-17-F. the one used in the movie is still painted the same way it was back then. its plane number 44-83546 witch is a G model but was modified to look like an F model. look it up.

  • @racecardriver467

According to the museum, and the owners, and multiple TV documentaries, it's the plane used to represent the Memphis Belle, in the movie Memphis Belle.

It's not a conspiracy, or some kind of elaborate con, this is the actual plane used in the movie. It's appearance was altered to make it look like the originals, and it ha been partially restored (The chin turret was put back).

  • Before you fire off at the mouth make sure you know what you are talking about and do a little bit of research first. That B-17 has Sally B on the left side and Memphis Belle on the right side. They did that for the movie with all the B-17's so that they could make it look like they had twice as many aircraft than what they really had. Sally B is permanently based at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford.

  • duxford fantatstic place ive seen this fly beautiflul

  • she played several aircraft in the film. windy city, my zita, also she was memphis belle for the final part of film when she lands all shot up. I saw her at west malling airshow still in movie paint with the rudder in the special effects paint still . She to this day lives at duxford and is cared for by a dedicated team of volunteers. I am in the presavation society that can be joind on line. A perk of this going on bored sally b and sitting in the pilots seat, amazing.......

  • is sallyb and it was duxford

  • Yes and yes. The sally B is one of the aircraft used in the movie.

  • What I like about these old turboprop and older jet aircraft was that the sound ´goes right through you´. Like an American muscle car´s engine. Also like the Boeing 707, DC-8 and Boeing 727 jets. I totally dislike these newer jets and it is most unfortunate that European Union has banned these famous jets coming into our airspace. I haven´t seen a Boeing 707 0r DC-8 since about year 2001.

  • Pretty sure this was the B17 that was at St Mawgan Cornwall air show close to 15 years ago. Sally B. We got to have a look around inside. It was magic when they fired up the radials with all the oil smoke etc.

I was surprised when they did a few circuits.....they didn't muck around considering the age of the plane.

  • i live quite near Duxford to know about this B-17 'Sally B'. It was not used in the film Memphis Belle, but an old firebomber B-17G, which is in America

  • Sorry, to burst your bubble, but the official history of this plan says otherwise. It WAS used to film many of the scence in the film Memphis Belle.

  • I live in the UK very close to Duxford. One sunny day in August 1989 five B-17's and a

B-25 flew over the centre of Cambridge en-route to Duxford airfield. I rushed the 7 miles down the motorway to find the B-17's had indeed landed at Duxford. Each was painted with differing nose-art on each side representing - to the camera - 10 different B-17's. Sally-B was painted as Memphis Belle. I learned they were there for filming, the B-25 being a camera ship. An unforgettable day, thanks for posting.

  • This is a B-17G "Cheyenne tail". Memphis Bell is a B-17F.

  • Sorry, but did you actually read the text introduction?

This isn't the WWII bomber Memphis Belle, it's the bomber used in the FILM Memphis Belle.

  • Were you at Duxford?

We have relatives who live near there and they said the planes flew over their farm while the movie was filming.

I was lucky enough to fly to the UK to visit them and we spent an afternoon at the airfield and Imperial War Museum. Loved every minute of it.

  • Yes, I beleive that this was Duxford. They had a lot of cool stuff there, like an A10 hung from the ceiling.

They had a second B-17 in a hanger, though I didn't see it flying.

  • i was there that day and got to sit in the co pilots seat,,,it was very windy and the plane rocked about like it was made of balsa wood,,loverly plane and good show just a shame the mass spitfire display was cancelled becouse the wind was gusting,,,but good video brought back good memories thx

  • You're probably thinking of a different day. I wasn't at an air display, though I would love to have been. This was a routine flight. They ran the engine up fo rabout 5-10 minutes, taxied and then took off. That was all.

  • Sorry, but you seem not to have read my write up. I clearly state that this is the B-17 used in the FILM Memphis Belle.

To be exact, it's the Sally B painted in the colors of the Memphis Belle.

  • thats not the real memphis belle.
