Hello to Neil Young in Sand (Hello Cowsils? in the Sand)
Is today's musIck really so bland? (can you say "Voyage of the Damned"?)
To be a clown with a turned-down frown. To take a stand and to be short-hand.did. To be a powderfinger and to be let it burn and linger. Old enough, now, to know Neil Young . To read his purple lyrics on a gray background. To be his main joker and not be jokin' 'round. When so many love his later stuff it's a shame and not near enough know his name.
Neil is the man...I hope he plays in Ireland soon..if any of you peeps aren't busy it would make my day if you checked out my cover of this and let me know what you thought :-D
I have to admit that im not a big fan of mr Young and only heard this song after dallas green covered it, but after seeing this i cant even describe in words how good this proformance was. nobody can top it
Neil Young doesn't "make his music" by what's popular at any given moment, he creates his music by what has grabbed his fancy at any given time...and that can change a lot with him. I love him for it. He writes, records, and plays whatever he feels like it. Let's his muse take him where it will.
I believe your statement is one of the most idiotic I've seen on this site. It blatantly displays your ignorance of Neil Young as a singer/songwriter. Neil is well-known for being extremely outspoken with his music when he addresses political and social issues from his perspective. He can care less whether or not it's "popular," you bumbling jackass.
Neil Young would say, "Shalom" ya'll. I'm both the synthesis of flight of fancy united with social/political issues. Beautiful to listen to, yet making a statement." You can agree with him or disagree as long as you are listening.
@mikesrandomvids No, Kurt didn't always do it just for the fans, but Kurt Cobain's dream was to become the biggest rockstar in the world, which he was for a while. On Nirvana's studio albums even though Kurt Cobain would initially be against potentially more mainstream additions to the songs, he could usually be convinced. Neil's complete determination to do things his own way regardless of anything else is why he never works with any person or group long and his wavering mainstream popularity.
No, man. You're dreadfully mistaken. Kurt didn't want the fame. In fact, he despised it. His notorious "suicide" note started out as a simple "I'm leaving Nirvana and quitting music because I can't take the pressure" message to his fans. He always wanted to be remembered for what he stood for, rather than just the typical "rockstar" image, which he also despised... See: his infamous feud with Axl Rose. Kurt was an artist. Neil wanted to work with him, never got the chance.
He came to hate fame once he had it, but that does not mean that he did not have the desire to be famous before it actually happened. He didn't expect it to happen, but he still wanted it. Once he became famous, however, he found that the fame did not solve all of his problems as the thought it would. His resentment of fame came after it happened, which people frequently forget (or choose not to see). He was by no means a sell out, he didn't pursue fame, but he still had the desire for fame.
abeatlesguy, you should write fiction. Oh wait, you already are. Kurt was never in it for the fame. Courtney was and Kurt was her 'vehicle' to that . She tried with Roz Rozzington first but Kurt was her ticket to 'stardom.' Your comment regarding Neil's "determination to do things his own way regardless..." is laughable. Crazy Horse lasted a lot longer than the Beatles as a band and Neil has the distinction of producing a 'country' album', every second album for decades.
Strat22c, you know facts, but you haven't disproved anything I said. First of all I never said that Kurt was "in it for the fame." I said that he had the desire for fame, which he did. The way you worded it implies that I said his sole purpose was to become famous, which I did not say. Cobain's problem was not fame, it was the sacrifice of art for the sake of fame. That is why he always respected people like Young who did what they wanted. Cobain wanted to be famous while still doing....
what he wanted to do. Once Cobain became famous he realized that he was becoming part of the corporate machine that he had so long hated, and he didn't feel like he could do anything to stop it. That is why he hated his own fame so much. Now to Neil Young. Crazy Horse has been together much longer that the Beatles were, but Neil Young and Crazy Horse are two things. Young never sticks with Crazy Horse for more than a few years at a time. As for every other album being a country album....
could it not be that Neil likes country? To the next point, Neil Young has certainly had wavering popularity. Buffalo Springfield was a high point of popularity followed by a low point after they disbanded. His popularity raised again with CSN&Y, After the Gold Rush, and Harvest, and slowly declined throughout the later seventies. Most of the eighties were a low point. His popularity went up again in the late eighties and early nineties, and has slowly declined since. Being successful...
overall and remaining somewhat popular in his low points does not mean that he did not have wavering popularity because he certainly had highs and lows, whatever the cause. I dont know why you would mention his two biggest hits in Heart of Gold going #1 in 1972 and Rockin in the Free World going #2 in 1989 because it just proves that he had wavering popularity. His biggest hits were seventeen years apart! That means that in between that time his popularity was not as high as it was in those years
Young certainly had wavering popularity, and saying that he did not is foolish because he very obviously had highs and lows. I do know what I am talking about with Young and Cobain, and your argument has done nothing to discredit that claim.
As for his "wavering mainstream popularity" I don't see how being probably one of the 100 most popular singer/songwriters of the last 40 years qualifies his popularity as "wavering." He is popular enough to have bands of the calibre of Sonic Youth open for him and is still popular enough to fill a very large venue, pretty much anywhere on the planet. Not many other musicians of his generation have anywhere near the popularity today that he does with people who are a third his age.
He had a song at #1 on the US charts in 1972, a song at #2 in 1989 and MTV video of the year in 1989 for a video that MTV initially 'banned' from their rotation because of its lyric content. Two international best sellers in 1989 and two different songs. Nothing "wavering" about that at all.
His reasons for putting his music career in the backseat for most of the 1980's is also well documented, as is his continuing support of the issue that stemmed from. Your comments here just indicate that you don't have a clue about what you are talking about, Neil or Kurt.

Is this guy cheap and selfish?, I've never seen him live, but I"M wondering, he can afford to have backup singers like in the original we bought, unless he's flatass broke. he cant afford musicians to give it a fuller sound?
seems like my Panasonic Lumix is very good when it comes to acoustic concerts.. and the sound at the venue was already great. so it's just a lucky shot I guess..
He gets better with age.I saw him live in the 70's and I was so pleasantly surprised to see you put this up here. Great video, and you made my day. Wonderful memories. Merci beaucoup
I hope I will ever see him live. I missed him playin in Vienna a month ago but the tickets were just far too expensive for a 16 years old.
Still I like the version from Live At The Fillmore East most. I so much wish I would have been there. That version is just pure magic and ecstasy, especially the very beginning.
I'm going to see Neil's tour in Manchester next month. Have seen him before several times in festival and arena settings - never thought I'd get a chance to see him in a theatre. Can't wait.
And it's a shame that the boy in me that can't play well with others but Neils to blame .. /C C G/ A / Am / F ..
Just one great song to last a lifetime.
