  • ;) Don't despair... Act!

Watch: "Paraglider Harness Leg Strap Recovery"

  • I teach Pg for a living, have done for 22 years, This is one of the greatest dangers, the Human Brain, I teach pre flight checks to be vital and your life depends on them from Day 1. However, even though we drum this in in school it does not always stick. I have stood in front of pilots " have you done your checks" i say. yes they say. as they go to launch i shout stop! Look down. Now do your checks don't just say them in your mind! The pilot must have been stressed at T/O to not feel no straps

  • why the other people do not warn the pilot about straps

  • WOW that was a close one ...nappies for all {+_+}

  • that video makes my stomach queezy , that must have been terrifying

  • why couldnt he control the glider? would pulling on the breaks mean that he'd push himself out of the harness?

  • jesus im glad hes ok

  • accidents happen. we must re-learn from them. he could have strapped in while he was flying. This is clearly stated in the manuals and emergency procedures learned in our training. If he froze, he needs to consider another form of recreation.

  • @seekndestroy454 no, you can't strap in while flying. It's like pulling yourself out of a swamp by the hair. Once I had set my leg straps to strong for my new suit. I was unable to get into the sitting position. The straps had cut off all the the blood in my legs and I was fallen half passed out before reaching the ground.

  • So the message is dont forget to strap in! OK got ya. ahhhhh forgot to strap innnnnnnnnnnnnnn.................. thump.

Hey why not have one of those remove before flight tag things aircraft and helicopters have to prevent accidents? Have one stuck to the canopy. Then when it flaps around you will remember to strap in and that would end the problem of fatal memory loss.

  • Stupid fucking man, I would have asked him to leave the club, or get banned for life. You really don't want Idiots like that around in this sport.

  • im not a paraglider nor glider of any sort but i shit my self i thought he was hanging on to the parachute with his bare hands and i thought he couldent hold it so hed fall to his death but obviously that wasent the case ? so what actually happened here can some one please explain thanks thank god hes alive !

  • he has stripes on his suit where the chest straps and leg straps would normally go. I wonder if that contributed to the bystanders not noticing.

  • I only breathed twice during this whole video. Whew. what a relief.

I'm glad he didn't fall out! I bet his arms were sore the next day.

He probably has a new appreciation for his life too!

  • This is worse than horror, since you know it's real. For safety reasons, most harnesses have T-lock system these days. Often the center safety belt is red color, to be well visible (unless the background color is red as well, like in this vid the red pilot suit). I ask myself if it would have made a difference if his suit had a different color, so people could see more clearly that the T-lock was'n attached. On the other hand, it is clear that the black leg straps are not visible as well...

  • i'm not a paraglider, just a powerkiter. what needs to be strapped in to where and what happens if you don't do it? thanks for your explanation!

  • As a paraglider you have to close your leg-straps at all times. Those straps prevent you from slipping out of your harness during take-off and landing. The outcome of not having your leg-straps closed could be catastrofal, you could fall out of your harness. The height at which this happens determines the severeness of your injuries.

  • @MikeyFirst

Ok, now it all makes sense!! Thanks a lot for your explanation!! :)

  • Holly crap that scared the shit out of me. I to am sometimes in a hurry to get in the air, NO MORE

  • happy ending .. broken leg and few bones .. i WILL NEVER EVER forget to strap in .. thx for the vid

  • I forgot to strap in once...when I was practicing ground training luckily.

The training harness was ripped from me by a short gust of wind with me holding onto the brakes and getting sent backwards.

If you know about PG flying you can guess what happend next.

I'll never forget again...luckly I was on the ground.

  • I have only just seen this clip. The same happened to me at Millau in France . I held on to my arm harness for about 15 mins before I managed to crash land. The problem ?. I was too eager to get in the air I forgot to go through the normal security checks

    . My stupid fault !!!!

  • shiiit .. .

  • Scariest video I've seen in a while. That could have been much worse.

  • Where is this place?

  • Mount Maunganui, New Zealand

  • I truthfully belive those on the takeoff are *not* pilots, but curious tourists.

  • I truly believe in the tooth fairy

  • When things go bad, it's always a combination of several things that come together at once... the accident woudn't have occured if any one factor is removed.

No buddy system, where pilots check each other, and the launch point should be off limits to those already in the air. Did anyone catch that when the "moral support" pilot buzzed the launch point?

  • And with that you prove you're not a pilot and have no clue about PG flying. But carry on pulling it out your ass.

  • I fly all the time, I've never forgotten to strap in... after watching this, I'll be sure to check every time from now on. It's a pretty scary thing, I'm glad he's okay...

  • Next time your out there. Dont just happen to check yourself, check those around you, The Life you save, May be someone you love.. God Bless that this guy lived.

  • Hopefully 11,714 less chances of the same thing happening to us who are watching.

Lets make sure we do our checks the next time we are out paragliding.

    PEACE.

  • Wow! I'm glad you made it man,but I bet you ended up with a pair of those underwear your mom tells you not to wear in case an ambulance has to pick you up.

  • LUCKY GUY

  • A simple CHECKLIST would have prevented this.

All pilots need to understand the importance of using checklists.

  • Everyone has a solution.

Have any of you ever heard of BRAIN FREEZE. I'd bet that is one thing that happened. Another thing that happened if you look carefully is that he us hanging by his arm pits. Trust me. If that is your only source of security from falling. You're NOT going to try and pull yourself up. I think he did a great job getting himself down by weight shifting the glider and steering over the water. I'm glad the camera man turned the camera off. I would have hated to see him fall.

  • Why didn't the pilot just do up his straps in the air? Why did he not fly the glider to a clear landing? His first mistake was not doing up his straps, his second mistake was not doing his pre-launch check. But his third mistake was the worst. He flew for how long without simply buckling in.

  • If he could have done up his straps in flight he would have, Fly to a clear landing? Very little control if any...try it yourself one day and see how well you do when you think youre about to die and can do nothing but hang on. By the time the pilot "crash" landed he had almost completely slipped out of the harness and had no feeling in either arm from lack of blood circulation.

  • I myself have launched without leg straps. I have also undone and resecured a chest strap in flight. What prevented him from simply attaching the straps? What prevented him from using his brakes to steer? Nothing except fear. For that, he ended up with broken bones, and could have been worse, he could have flown into power lines. Never stop flying your wing and if you discover you have launched without your straps, get them on right away.

  • @SDMagoo I should stop watching these. I am mad keen to get into it. Does he have a safety/backup chute if he lets go?

  • @myndenway And you've made a mistake to, by saying his third mistake was his worst. Have a look closely about his 1st mistake. then reread what you have said.

  • @happymana Having not strapped himself in, the most egregious mistake was his third.

  • How can you say that this is NICE! It is not nice it's awful and stupid!
