These people died of typhus and starvation. There was a typhus epidemic and the allies bombed the supply routes. The food was in very short supply because the allies cut off the means of getting around the country.

I just read on another site that Anne and Margot Frank were transferred here from Auschwitz in Oct. 1945. They were probably placed in the "tent camp". After a several day rail journey in cattle cars they had to live in tents with no toilet, lights, heat, just a bit of straw on the bare ground. Both contracted typhus as did thousands of others and were buried in mass graves. RIP to all victims of Belsen.

Several years ago a friend and myself were traveling through Germany and drove the two hours down from Cologne to visit the Kolmeshöhe cemetery in Bitburg to give proper respect. We brought several beers and pissed all over the Nazi headstones for at least an hour. After Bonzo went to Bitburg and laid a wreath we figured it was the least we could do, my only regret was we were not the first. some soldiers stationed at the nearby airbase told us they had doing it for years.I want to return.

@ReginaDeviant The longer you were in a camp the thinner they became, that's why some were so thin, they also had to work on a bowl of thin soup for the whole day, the ones that had been there the longest knew to wait and get their soup from the bottom where it was thicker. Also if you could not find yourself a soup bowl and spoon then you did not eat.

I just read on another site that Anne and Margot Frank were transferred here from Auschwitz in Oct. 1945. They were probably placed in the "tent camp". After a several day rail journey in cattle cars they had to live in tents with no toilet, lights, heat, just a bit of straw on the bare ground. Both contracted typhus as did thousands of others and were buried in mass graves. RIP to all victims of Belsen.
