  • This guy's the real deal. A real musician....not some poser for rolling stone.

  • This almost puts me to tears

  • This video says about everything you need to know about playing the guitar

  • @xlp3t3r yep

  • To' 14 people: FUCK

  • This performance just tears me apart...

  • this(not his technique or speed) is what elavates him into the very top tier of guitarists to have ever set foot on the planet

  • @Kingding6

I agree so much. This is so beutiful..

  • I still haven't heard what makes Buckethead a bad guitar player.

Can't people just say, ''I don't like his music'' or something like that?

After listening to a lot of his music, the only really bad thing that I could say is that reuses the same stuff sometimes. He's got skill, he's got creativity, and I'd say he plays with taste 95% of the time, if someone honesly thinks he is bad, then I doubt they've heard-

The Interworld And The New Innocence

    Scraps

    Jump Man

    Kidogo

    Lebron

    Sled Ride

  • @MegaYoshitsune There is, quite literally, hundreads of great (in my opinion) tunes by Buckethead, if someone doesn't like him, then fine, I don't care, but saying he sucks is just wrong, it really is. Also I never had enough space in my last post to mention- Destroyer: Speed Flux Quadrant / Inclusion / Exhaust Release Welcome to Bucketheadland Inferno Whitewash Night of the Slunk Seven Laws of Woo Yoshimtsu's Den The Blind Sniper (Fred Rogers) Forbidden Zone I Love My Parents etc
  • You make me smile bud, thank you.

  • Jimi-Eric-etc.--they were all the progenitors of the classic rock guitar lead schtick. Had Sean surfaced in the mid-60s he'd be an icon too. Problem is: by the time Sean came on the whole guitar God thing had worn a tad thin..

  • What a beautiful guitar sound. What a beautiful person. It's a shame he died right at the rise of current monoclonal-antibody drugs. They might have been able to replace his steroids. Geez...... I am blabbering now because I am sad that he isn't with us anymore.

  • Shawn epitomizes everything good and heartfelt.

  • One of my favorite films ever !! I went looking for the score and Bam this came up . So much postive playing in this mans soul . I listen to this and the other versions all the time . Of course it's like heaven when I crank it . Thank you for making these recordings .

  • is anyone else seeing this!?!? good god, what couldnt this man do!!! I still get surprised, happy, tears, every emotion possible each video i see of shawn.

  • this will be played at my wedding

  • How come someone can dislike this masterpiece interpretation? What's in there to be disliked?

  • Lane along with Holdsworth define the electric guitar...conceptually, tonally, musically and artistically.

    His tone was other-wordly.

    Fabulous musician.

    R.I.P.

  • Hope you like my version on my channel, inspired after I saw this incredible version by Shawn.

  • RESPECT!

  • That bend at 3:53, just EPIC

  • @thiagorisingforce yeah that was when the tears started pouring in from me ;(

  • At 4 minutes I'm reduced to tears.

  • just heard about this guy a week ago from my guitar teacher, hes probably better than randy rhoads and jimi hendrix why is it that not a lot of people know who he is?

  • @gesiz22 speaking solely about technique randy and jimi would not even be able to comprehend Shawn's genius. But from a creative standpoint Jimi > both of them

  • @fenderguitars087 I think you're dead right. IMO, Shawn Lane is the greatest technical electric guitar player of all time. Other players, most notably Paul Gilbert and Buckethead virtually revere him.

Jimi, on the other hand, influenced far more guitarists than anyone I can think of, by showing people what was possible. Not the greatest player technically, but oceans of vision and creativity.

  • @BobTheSubgenius That is really interesting, I had never heard that before. May I ask where/how you found that out? I listen to Buckethead quite a bit and really find him unbelievably talented... if what you say is true that he and Paul highly respented Shawn's playing that really, really says alot about Mr. Lane. I will need to listen to Shawn more... this is the first time i've heard him and I only found this posting out because I love this song. Sounds really amazing. Soulful!

  • @RedsoxandCeltics You should watch the video called ''Shawn Lane Tribute'', it shows loads of guitarists like Michael Angelo Batio, Rusty Cooley, Greg Howe and many others say great things about Shawn!

  • @gesiz22 He was kind of the JD Salinger of rock music, or of guitarists. He was kind of reclusive, almost obsessively developing his technique and composition for about 8 years. Weirdly, he did most of his composing in that period on the piano, which he also played brilliantly.

He was extremely reluctant to record, thinking that by the time he had his current body of music ready to release, it was already in his rearview mirror and he was on to other themes and sounds.

  • @gesiz22 He lived for music alone ...sometimes that isn't enough to make it big ....but to make it brilliant.

  • @gesiz22

Because he was overweight, and he wasn't loud and obnoxious.

  • @gesiz22 Great question, another great question is why Randy Rhoads and Jimi Hendrix are even in the same breath as Shawn Lane, here's a few guitarists easily superior to both of them Malmsteen, Johnson, Govan (!), Holdsworth, Gilbert, Vai, Abasi, Bettencourt... So many others, that's the tip of the iceberg of superior players. Geez... actually, I'm not finished, Metheny, Carlton, Satriani, Howe, Petrucci, Di Meola, Breau... Jimi and Randy aren't worth comparing to some of the guys I list.

  • @oilers1go1 Don't forget Buckethead dude. Shawn loved Buckethead.

  • @xTiLkx Buckethead is garbage, his music is shit and his shredding is a bunch of noise. Buckethead doesn't even deserve an honorable mention for being a great guitar player. I will never consider him to be any good.

  • @oilers1go1 That's odd for many reasons. Mainly because Shawn considered Buckethead one of the best guitarists he has ever met and jammed with him frequently. Also because the majority of Buckethead's songs are acoustic.

But I'm sure the vast amount of theoretical knowledge you have and the months you spent analysing Buckethead's 500+ songs outweighs Shawn Lane's judgement.

  • @xTiLkx Many musicians/bands will say good things about or kiss the ass of other bands, it doesn't make them good you fucking idiot. What relevance does it have that most of his songs are acoustic? They're still uninspired pieces of trash. Should I like them because they're acoustic? Laughable. Writing 500 bad songs doesn't make him good, Rivers Cuomo of Weezer has wrote hundreds of songs too, but they aren't all good. They were friends you stupid cunt, of course he'll praise him.

  • @oilers1go1 Are you fucking retarded?

  • @xTiLkx That's the best response you could manage? lol!!

  • @oilers1go1 Words aren't able to describe the fail. How about you keep from contradicting yourself before starting a discussion, mmkai?

  • @xTiLkx The only fail here is you pal. I never once contradicted myself (do you even know what a contradiction is?), if you can explain it, please do. lol I am interested in hearing what you come up with to validate your ridiculous opinion. It doesn't take months to sift through an artists body of work, I could listen to the entire Buckethead catalogue in a few days, with breaks and just because Shawn Lane praises him, speaks nothing of his talent. Do you not understand that?

  • @xTiLkx Understand this, Shawn Lane and Buckethead were friends. So his opinion is going to be biased heavily towards a positive word rather than a negative one. So his "expert" opinion is irrelevant to coming to a judgement on the talent of Buckethead. It's more a kind word from a friend than anything else. Why you mention that the majority of his songs are Acoustic escapes me, it's quite redundant really. As for theoretical knowledge, do you mean Musical Theory? If so, what is the relevance?

  • @xTiLkx Is it that without it, my opinion isn't valid? If so, I do know plenty of Musical Theory and have a very adept ear, so I assure you my opinion is an educated one. Now, when you find those words to describe my fail, let me know. I have mine ready. Your failure is immense and full of poor reasons to support any debate as to why Buckethead should be considered a great shredder/composer. First you present a biased source, then make a redundant statement about most of his songs being acoustic

  • @xTiLkx So to summarize these events: You have failed in EPIC fashion.

  • @oilers1go1 Shit, you have destroyed him Oo

  • @SweeetPicker Thanks. It wasn't hard really. lol... And Buckethead is awful.

  • @oilers1go1 But ... I don't agree with you. Buckethead's song are very special ... But they are interesting and his playing is good. Some of his musics are really awesome. You can't say he is an awful guitarist because you don't like what he does. Some people think Lane's music sucks ... They don't like his playing, ok. But Lane is still one of the best guitarist in guitar history. It's a question of taste ...

  • @oilers1go1 This song is not about how hard is the song or shredding... Its about a feeling. U can also try with Death theme by shawn lane or Song for Diane... If u want shreeding or speed u can hear Savitri, Not again, Hardcase...

  • @LucasSeis We were never discussing the song in the first place. But thanks.

  • @xTiLkx Then you weigh my theoretical knowledge to that of a person with a clearly biased/favouritist stance in the matter and call me fucking retarded when I make you look like an idiot. Then without batting an eye you proceed to not refute anything I say, but instead decide to make what I can only see as a last ditch effort to sway the argument in your favor, by saying I fail (Why?) and have contradicted myself (How?) and proceed to dismiss me without having actually come out of this alive lol

  • @xTiLkx But hey thanks for presenting some ludicrous reasons for liking something, if Shawn Lane praised punching yourself in the face, would you question anyone who disagrees with it and say: SHAWN LANE LIKES IT SO IT MUST BE GOOD. But being on your side of the fence where you are accustom to listening to shit no doubt, I don't think I will convince you that you're wrong. You listen to you music, I'll listen to mine, but know this. Buckethead is SHIT.

  • @gesiz22 Because the average person probably doesn't like/comprehend his music. It's not mainstream like Hendrix or Ozzy. Though In a way I would prefer him to be less known. He's one of those hidden gems you know?

  • @wespalladini YOU KNOW I COULDNT AGREE MORE............MOST OF THE TIME IM WITH A GROUP OF MUSICIANS THAT ARE THROWING OUT NAMES AND I SAY, "HAVE YOU HEARD SHAWN LANE" AND THEIR JUST LIKE 'WHO!'........LOL, I THINK TO MYSELF...............IM A FUCKIN LUCKY GUY..........LOL

  • @gesiz22 seriously man! you should check out guthrie govan, alex hutchings, greg howe, paul gilbert, al di meola, jason becker, and tosin abasi (to name a few) if your comparing Shawn Lane to randy rhaods and jimi hendrix. these guys are pretty close to his league (mostly guthrie govan)

  • @gesiz22 Because he is fat.

  • I just got finished watching the movie of the same name...come and watch this...watch Shawn ascend into the heavens in the last minute and start crying. It's already an astonishingly beautiful piece of music, and this interpretation is perhaps even more beautiful.

  • MORRICONE RULES!!!!!!!

  • Shawn's touch breaks me heart every time. I'm so fukn pissed off that he's gone....

  • @treybruce me too.

  • well, there you go

  • I love that dude man

  • Extremely touching.

  • sergio leone and ennio morricone forever.

  • 4:22

    THE SUSTAIN! :()

  • @wesselbindt I'd say that's feedback

  • *

    THE FEEDBACK! :()

  • Good Job...Nice Playing.

  • right here, shawn plays an ibanez S series, his excalibur signature came later.i play the shawn lane standard in natural color,a great guitar, but i've changed the bridge air classic p.u. in a norton(both dimarzio),and now the the sound is perfect.

  • This is no ordinary S series. This guitar has 24 frets and a Low Pro Edge trem.Ibanez is only now starting to make S 24 sig models and S series guitars come with Edge trems.

  • I know it cant be an Edge trem because there is no such thing as a Gold Edge. They never made them, only Cosmo,Black,Chrome were available ith the Edge trem's.You build enough axes over the years you can spot real Floyds,TRS,Edge,Low Pro Edge,Gotoh Floyd trems at a glance.

  • If I'm not mistaken its an early type of ibanez radius? even though the pickup selector is dubious.

  • theres another song with this title from bruce springsteen and its also a instrumental i believe. is it a cover, or two different songs?

  • he used this song as an intro to badlands in 1980/81 and also two times (2007 and 2009) as his concert intro

  • Two diff song, what Shawn is playing is a song made by the amazing ennio morricone, its extracted from movie once upon a time in the west

  • Dear Santa... for Christmas... I want that guitar!!! :)

  • Everytime I hear this one, it gives me goose bumps big time. You feel Shawn's love for music

  • great tune

  • beautiful

  • R.I.P.

  • Fuck the bend at 3:44 is amazing.

  • What guitar is this? anybody?

  • Vigier guitars...

  • he used vigier a lot but its an ibanez.

  • That's Ibanez Mahogany saber custom made

  • ibanez saber...now is named ibanez S prestige series, check on site. i have one they are the most confortable guitars i ever tried, slim light body, big frets and large fretboards and the thinnest necks on the market

  • Tried one but I didn't like it unfortunally. ^^ It hurt my wrist and it was too "low" to sit with. Well, to each his own I guess, and of course it has to do with what model you're used to! (Les Paul here :D).

  • I also use a Les Paul, and was wondering what other guitars you have used that were comfortable to play with.

  • well, in my case I absolutely love the ESP eclipse, though very much based on the Les Paul. some PRS models have been quite ok to play on, as well as the Ibanez RG series. The models that don't quite do it for me are the Ibanez S and SA series as well as some Schechter/Washburn guitars. I don't know if that helps, but really you should just head down to a music store and try some diffrent ones out to see which ones you prefer. :) "One size fits all" is as far from the truth as you can get. :)

  • You have a wide range of necks your comfortable on bro.The models you like all have very different neck radiuses and fret wires.I am most comfortable on my RG wizard necks and have a tough time playing Gibson,s PRS's because they are like night and day.And dont care for S series because I am just so used to 24fret necks 22's throw me a little, but thats good your comfortable on so many different necks.Wish I could do that, the closest to the Wizard necks Ive found are on my Suhr modern 24's.

  • Diffrent, but all comfortable. :) But seriously, a lot of the time you get used to playing one thing and you think it's the most comfortable. If you're used to playing Les Pauls most likely you'll prefer the LP before almost any other guitar. In my case I like to mix and try diffrent things, and my favourite necks have been the Washburn DD61, ESP Eclipse and ESP LTD SC-207. 24 fret-guitars are cool, but I find that I don't use the 23rd and 24th frets that frequently, so I don't mind either way.

  • I think thats awesome you can do that man.I don't know to many guys that are that versatile and feel comfortable playing on different necks.I can deal with 22 or 24 but evrything else I cant get used to radius fretwire Etc.You are very lucky to have it like that my friend.

  • Like I said, I still think that you're just not used to playing other guitars. :) Initially I hated everything but my Les Paul, but once I had to start playing other guitars I eventually liked them more and more. It works like that for me, but then again I could be wrong.

  • Yeah it's not like that for everyone man.Especially when you take the body weights into concideration along with the necks.I have tried believe me and I will never get used to Gibsons,PRS..Just very very uncomfortable for me.Ive just been playing RG, Fender,Music Man, for way to long.Over 24yrs so changing is not something in my future, lol.Like I said you are lucky to have it like that because not many do thats a fact.

  • well, maybe I'm just awesome then. :P Yeah, that's probably it. :D

  • Ha,ha,maybe,peace bro..

  • I must be lucky too then, as I can play on thick or thin, 22, or 24, 6 or 7 string guitars the same ;).

    Anyway, how you doing man?

  • I'm well,how have ya been brother.

Yes I think its awesome for guys that can be cmfortable and any guitar.I mean I can still play them but not as comfortable as with my RG,s and Fender guitars.

    I love my 7strings also.

I just got my hands on the RG 2027X and it is amazing.I love the piezo system sick guitar and hard to find.I guess if you spend enough time you can get used to anything but know I would never be able to convert to a Gibson,or PRS just to used to thin necks, and light bodies

  • It's an Ibanez model.

  • Vigier Excalibur Shawn Lane (Master)Signature guitar.

  • Amazing rendition of that piece. It's a shame He had to go.

  • my mind is splattered on the wall behind me

  • This guy was just a brilliant guitarist and musician.

  • This is by far my favourite performance of shawns and like he said himself his favourite songs to play where slow songs like epilogue.

  • dunno what to say... I love that guy .. wow!!

  • r.i.p shawn. \m/ you will rock in the heavens now

  • I woke up the night he died

I went downstairs and turned on the computer and was drawn right to his website for some reason

then the years came up....birth to death

that was not a good day, but I wasn't surprised

the brightest candles burn out the quickest

  • Mind if I got you pregnant?

  • Beauty is hard to describe, but watching this performance makes it just a little easier ;)

  • i wish thad vid had a better quality... this gives me goosebumps all over the place :)

  • His touch is fucking perfect.

  • the emotion that i feel everytime i hear this is just overwhelming! ahhh.. Now this is what music is all about.. its all about making people feel something.. something wonderful.. whether its lively or depressing or whatever..

  • its from the movie of this title scored by Ennio Moriccone, by the director who made clint eastwood famous: sergio leone. Hearing it together with the plot and images of the town tryign to grow is perfection. i was hoping while the video loaded it woudl be the main theme of the gunfight, this drawn out utterly epic sequence. the film overflows with emotion and good music in the key scenes, i really really recommend it

  • Agree with you there. The film and soundtrack are just perfection, and that theme as Henry Fonda steps out of the bushes after killing the family is just epic.

  • ...and I would advise anybody who is moved by this performance to go listen to the original in the soundtrack. It will have you in tears. Of course, Shawn does an incredible job too!

  • most emotional solo. ever.

  • There are some good comments here about Shawn being restless and often overplaying. People seem to get so defensive about that, but it's true, especially on his earlier Willy's clips. This clip is wonderful, because he really used space and phrasing. It's sad, because I think as he got older, he was maturing and doing that more and more. It made his peerless technique and speed seem even more impressive when he would hold back like that. Sad that we couldn't see him continue his growth.

  • "continue his growth" lol

  • So wrong, but funny.....

  • LOL PMSL

  • i swear im on the verge of tears everytime i watch this

  • same here...hes was too good!

  • @guitarshreddar1122 absolutely right. I actually did cry while at work watching this.

  • This is Music.

  • oh, its more than that, its shawn lane, music itself bows to shawn lane

  • you know whats even sadder? the fact that a lot of people who do know about him seem to have almost forgotten about him...he was an amazing player who I hope will be remembered for a long time

  • Every time I listen to him, i miss him even more

  • He was from another planet ! FABULOUS !

  • jbrianfehr - u know nothing about true music by ur comments bro...just cut ur losses...

  • this song tells such a beautiful and emotional story, with every note played it became truly magnificant.

Shawn Lane a Legend but more to the point a genius.

  • I have never heard such emotion come from a guitar.

    This is amazing music.

I wish he was still alive...

Rest in peace, Shawn. You will always be remembered.

  • this is soul....this, is emotion.

    rip bro.

  • AAWWEESOME

  • shawn was hands down the most amazingly beautiful guitar player that ever lived

  • Shawn is good because of shawn

  • jbrianfehr,

Were you born with all of your brain functioning. Or did the rest of it get clouded with your ignorance. A good guitarist doesn't need a 5 man set-piece to make music. It's called a composition. The greatest musicians that have every live never had a singer, but they composed music. Which is what music is meant to be, composed, not drown out by other people jumping around the stage. Lane isn't mentioned because he preferred to stay under the radar. Jimmy=good cause of zep.

  • Apples and oranges if they weren't play the same instrument. But they are, and shawn lane is just way more talented then paige. It's not even an opinion. Shawn could play anything paige could, but better.

  • the biggest reason that people don't buy non vocal music is cuz people don't like it, many of the guys i know can't feel the emotion in songs like this one.. sorry if the english isnt great

  • RIP Shawn

  • what unparalleled tone....absolutely beautiful dynamics and overall performance

  • Lets be honest here, Becker was amazing. Unfortunately, he was not given the chance to grow. He peaked at 20 due to ALS, but Lane was still better when he was 20. I truly love them both. If you want to see something unbelievable from Lane (as far as playing and hand dexterity goes) check out "Time is the Enemy". If you do, pay close attention to 2:10-2:20.

  • Excellent example of how to use a tremolo.

  • Man I love this piece, especially that part from 2:00 to 2:10.

  • To those who like to compare their heroes: Musicians are musicians, and each are unique. There is no point in arguing who we like best, and I guarantee you that THEY wouldn't give a shit. That being said, Shawn Lane rocks all of your faces, and this is one of the best musical moments I have ever witnessed, and its on a shitty youtube video!

Its like he creates a direct line to your soul through his guitar, amazing. And Bravo to Ennio Morricone for writing such a beautiful melody

  • It's amazing people still manage to make comments about speed for a clip like this...Just sad really, listen to the clip.

  • AMEN... some people let their mouths starting working before their brain does :D

  • This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. The emotion Shawn put into this is absolutely astounding. Perfection is all I can say.

    RIP Shawn Lane

  • Awesome !

  • What's awesome about this clip is everyone knows that Shawn could play a million notes a second, but he DOESN'T here, because it would not serve the song. THAT'S the mark of a true musician; someone who is not a slave to superior technique, and who knows when NOT to overplay!!

  • yeah man.Thats what was so awesome about Shawn no matter what he was playing the flawless techiuqe in his phrasing was always present. And this is an exelent example of that, he is a living part of every note.Just the most amazing player i have ever heard..

  • well the singer sucks anyways...

  • Shawn never overplays. What did you want? An exact cover? Why not just listen to the original? The purpose of a cover is to make it your own and that is exactly what Shawn does. Why do you keep mentioning vocals? Are Page(as you seem to love) and Hendrix praised for vocals? It's good to see that Clear Channel has a firm grip on those who live the unexamined life. Why don't you take your ignorance to a more appropriate demographic. I'm sure Brittany Spears has plaeny of your favorites on YouTube.

  • kinda disrespectful to talk shit about him and his band seeing as he died. he was one of the best guitarists who has and ever will live more than likely

  • yeah but he was a fantastic guitarist and he loved life attitude is important too nobody likes a prick. i met michael angelo batio and expected him to be cocky as hell and he was very modest while yngwie malmsteen is a douche he won't give an autograph for nothing my friends band teacher tried to talk to him and he was a real jerk. according to most shawn lane was really kind and enjoyed talking to fellow musicians for a long time.

  • everything you say is true...

he is beloved by his fans, i think a large part of the attraction to certain guitarists is who the man is who is doing the playing playing..i've watched a few of Shawns lessons also and he is excellent at teaching...going back and watching "all along the watch tower", yes, fantasic,,i just would have enjoyed it more had he held off soloing on top both verses.

  • I agree, the reason being that 1 out of every 3 or so people in this country actually understands and sees music for what it is - a language. The other two people are responsible for the complete planned obsolescence of the music industry as we know it. People dont flock to buy this stuff because they are truely ignorant to what music actually is now. Congradulations.

  • i reckon its way less people than one in three, not enough people understand just how musically perfect Shawn was, and how pathetic image obsessed puppets are making billions off of screaming girls who like the singers haircut.. reflects badly on how shallow society is sometimes..
