Whoever says that John Mayer's version is better obviously only likes John Mayer more than Dave Matthews. John can't hit those high notes, and doesn't have all the instruments needed to pull off a sufficient cover.
Dave should consider doing a formal cover of this on their next album. It sorta reminds me of their Crash days. Would be great to get Pete to collaborate on a studio version.
i think this is an awesome cover..... covers are supposed to sound like the original with somebody elses voice and attitude to the song.... so i think dave did an awesome job with this song
i have to agree that there is no need to compare. Very rarely is a cover song better than the original. This is just a fun song that Dave loves and wants to play. Besides he does a great Peter Gabriel. Rock on Jeff Coffin
@kmac0 you expected more ???? listen to the real version then this daves voice sounds nothing lik that and dave cant sing in his own usual style cos it doesnt suit the song a "big fan of DMB" would notice this but as usual your just a bunch of pickey cunts that know sweet fuck all when it comes to music
In what way is this better than Gabriel's version? DMB fans are ridiculous. Dave's vocals were pretty good. But they brought nothing new to the song. The guitar work and backup vocals were both subpar, IMO. And I'm not even a Peter Gabriel fan.
@JBRHC78 it's cuz dmb fans are blinded by how much they love dmb. my friends were all like the beacon theater concert rocked. i'm a huge fan but come on daves voice was shit that night u'd have to b an idiot to say other wise.
@Dnt132 and JBRHC78 You guys are on the wrong boat. Dave is just performing a song he enjoys. Why compare? thats just gay. I found he did it justice, even if the vocals etc. can be subpar at times you're missing the whole thing that draws fans to DMB. They produce an intensity and energy when they perform. If you don't feel the energy level build when they perform than you need to stop bothering listening to them and move on. Most music now is just Top 20 Auto-tuned crap and DMB is refreshing.
@RadixBloom i didnt say nething about how good or bad this version was. i actually said something about the fans of dmb. and you don't know anything about me, i've got over 2600 songs in total just dave matthews. I've got some versions of songs that will spin your mind so don't assume anything about me. i stick by what i said, which you should re read again to make sure you understand what i said
I totally agree with everybody that says DM is heavily influenced by PG. I was listening to PG's "So" LP last week because I'm obsessed with the track "Big Time." As I listened to the album in its entirety, I thought that it sounded a lot like DM. Then just the other night my buddy told me to check out the DMB song "Sledgehammer," not knowing it was a PG cover. It makes total sense now. You can also hear the African tribal sounds that DM uses in a lot of PG's work as well. Peace
I believe Dave Matthews was influenced by Gabriel's vocals, if you listen to any of the 80s Peter Gabriel, you can hear alot of where DM gets his vocal style. Sweet to see a cover by dmb now i want to see them do a Big Time cover and Salisbury Hill.
saw them tonight in syracuse and was listing to soundcheck this after noon and they jammed this and it sounded sooo much better than this was thinking for sure theyd play it but it was a no go but we did get solsburry hill though and some other great stuff
He sounds a LOT like Gabriel. I don't think you can call an almost exact copy better than the original, it's an amazing song and he does a great job on it, but it's nearly an exact duplicate of the original and so its impossible for it to be better.
That rocks because over a year ago i said to myself once " it would be awesome if dave matthews did a cover of sledgehammer or big time, that would fuckin rock" and then they did.... freaky and it sounds pretty much how i thought it would. its one of my fav. dave songs now
A friend of mine who lives in Pueblo was at this show and she called me during this song and held the phone up... I was blown away when I realized they were doing Sledgehammer.
great cover.. and great solo by tim fucking reynolds!

gotto disagree with you on that one.
DMB did this much better than Peter Gabriel, and IF spice girls would cover this song.. it would probably suck ass.
cuz spice girls are BAD <3
The song itself is amazing, but spice girls couldn't done this song sound decent in any way.
