00:16 The sentence (not subtitle) says that the original scene was deleted due to the ruling of Seoul Central District Court. In addition, the ruling was the result of lawsuit filed by Park Chunghee's son.
@Dogar230 It had 1.08 million admissions. Break-even point was 1.77 million. A bit of a flop, but respectable after incredible controversy. They had guards checking bags at the premiere!
Park's dictatorship was much oppressive and pervasive than Chun's despite Chun's massacre of Kwang-ju citizens. Chun wanted to put a distance between his dictatorship and Park's regime and at least restored direct presidential election even if election was rigged (Under Park's Yooshin Constitution, people could not vote president directly and only approved candiates could run for parliament). My dad believes that Korea would still be under Park's dictatorship if he wasn't killed by Kim.
I wrote more about the assassination in Part 4 of this movie, so I won't repeat them here except to say that many people are less sympathetic to Director Kim because of failure of coup, which only brought another military dictatorship under General Chun. But my father, who lived under Park's dictatorship (and actually knew Chief Agent Park, called Chief Agent Ju in the movie, and was a classmate with Chief Secretary's brother), thinks that Director Kim did a great service by killing Park.
According to Cardinal Kim, a leading figure in opposition movement, Director Kim (then KCIA deputy director) came to see him whenever there was crisis and once asked him to talk to President Park to come up with "third way," that is, to modify amended constitution (called Yooshin Constitution). Deputy director Kim believed Kim, as Catholic Cardinal, was the only person who could speak frankly to Park without repercussion and was disappointed when nothing came out of it.
He also made contacts with opposition leaders. When leading democracy activist Jang died in suspicious circumstance in 2005, he arranged to support his family with house (Kim was Construction Minister at the time.) While in prison, Jang had told a cellmate that Park's regime could be toppled only by military and that there was a conscientious soldier who would do so. He also told another person that Kim believed in democracy and was someone with whom they could work together one day.
Kim later revealed that he planned to arrest Park when he would visit the base on tour and confine him in that house to force his resignation. Also U.S. embassy documents later revealed that Kim was rather odd KCIA director who often talked about democracy with US diplomats and that he often carried US messages on human rights to Park. By the way, this gave a rise to ridiculous conspiracy theory that CIA was behind Park's assassination because Park wanted to develop nuclear weapon.
He was very disappointed when Park broke his promise never to run for office again, which he made to voters in 1971 election on Kim's suggestion, and especially when he amended constitution to guarantee his perpetual dictatorship in 1972 after he won narrowly despite spending 10% of national budget on election. At the time Kim was commander of 3rd Division and changed wire around a house in the basethat was set to prevent entry so that it would prevent escape instead.
So many people believed that KCIA director Kim killed President Park out of momentary anger or for being sidestepped in favor of his rival Chief Bodyguard Cha. At first I was myself skeptical when Kim claimed that he killed Park for democracy and to prevent deaths of many people. But I did some more research and now believe that Park did plan to kill Park for some time and decided to act the moment he learned that Park would come to KCIA safehouse.
I enjoyed this movie when I didn't know the details of President Park's assassination, but now I think it's a little too harsh to KCIA Director Kim. However, this movie is quite representative of how the event is viewed by many people. Supporters for democracy found it hard to believe that KCIA director suddenly became a freedom fighter after so many years as Park's most trusted henchman. And Park's suppoters obviously did not like the assassin of their hero.
