I'm directing a one act about a post-nuclear London this semester. The characters have paper bags over their heads the entire play, and at first I laughed thinking this would be a riot, but then realized that people seriously thought things like that would help. I can't say I don't expect laughter from the audience, but if I can get my actors not to play for laughs, I think people might realize the implications. (Right up my alley, too, as I'm a political science major!)
No matter what people say the siren worked. Perhaps too well No matter how frightening it is you secretly want one of these on your phone to scare people :P
I live around 8 miled away from Leicester, it's scary to think that where I live right now might have been bombed if the Germans didn't miss us and hit Coventry. Also it's cool to think that we once had such powerful production power, leading to the multi-cultured city that we are today.
Hm, running in "Alert" instead of "Attack." Pretty good. Never heard one of these in Alert.
BTW, do you folks in the UK have any sort of imminent danger warning system, anymore? I know I've heard about periodic tornado warnings in London. Also, I think I remember hearing about something of a bad storm hitting Sheffield.
This siren is either Gents of Leicester or Carter of Nelson, Lancs, it cannot be both!
These firms both made sirens for WW2 and were competitors. If the photograph is anything to go by, then it is a 4HP Gents "Tangent" siren, the standard Government recommended issue for civilian use.
@1985woooman@Schutzraumtechnik999 You both are messed up for saying it is calming. Sickos like you shouldn't be on You Tube. Makes me wonder if you two spend time wanking off to this. Just sick!
@maccamacca87 I'm not sure how to take that remark though I get what you're joking about. I just hope you're not one of those sick freaks who actuall like this.
@Luka2234 No, i just heard this on silent hill a couple of times, then bought some surround sound and played a VERY fucking funny prank on my roommate.
This is music to my ears, as long as the eminent destruction doesn't happen along with it. Kate Beckinsale was actually the British siren I was looking for and thank you @bestshowontheweb for allowing us to relive the frightful terror of a sky full of ME109's with your play by play broadcast.
@Th3King86 yes. in all the silent hill games and the film the siren going off is the warning that the world is going to become all twisted and full of dangerous monsters.
the castle siren sounds very similar but used for a different reason for nukes, if you heard a castle siren and it was a nuke it is pretty much useless to get to cover
"All pilots to your planes. Repeat. All pilots to your planes. Coastal Defense radar has picked up five rafts of jerry bombers with fighter escort inbound over Dover. Intended targets include London and Coventry. All pilots are requested to be airborne immediatly."
@bestshowontheweb *Ring Ring* Dispersal? Squadron SCRAMBLE!!! Rabbit Squadron airborne, tophat control do you read me over?? Roger Rabbit leader this is tophat control, bandits 10 miles east of you heading north west, alter vector 3.2.0 and make angels 2.0, bandits 100 plus, repeat bandits 100 plus. Roger Tophat!
@bestshowontheweb Where I grew up there`s a field in which a WW2 bomb landed intended for Coventry, probably Peugeot as it`s about 400 yds from where it landed. A huge crater known locally as the bomb hole
Imagine sitting with your family, eating dinner. It is a little past 9pm. You are listening to the radio about the war (WWII) and hearing all sorts of horror stories. then 0:00 occurs.
@camoelf initially you did not know it happened, then after you feel the air hit the blood, it tingles then hurts like a bitch. I think (for me anyway) the hearing protection interfered with processing the fact that my thumb was mangled and dangling by a chunk of skin. I stil cannot feel anything from it. Hey, at least we didn't turn around and sue like the dumbass at McDonald's.
@camoelf Actually... one night my friends were drunk and I was just bored (very bad combo). We have an STH 10 siren (among others) It clearly states on a decal not to put fingers into the ports. OK so Jorg goes ahead and sticks his middle finger in there and loses it, I think it through alittle and put my thumb (not a finger!) in. Well my thumb looks like a spiral-cut ham now, but is still there, unlike Jorg's finger.
@L0ND0NITE We used to have a Carter siren exactly like this on the fire station roof in my town when I was little in the days before mobile telecommunication. When it went off it was really un nerving. Must have been really scary in WW2 just before a raid started.
@L0ND0NITE We used to have a Carter siren exactly like this on the fire station roof in my town when I was little in the days before mobile telecommunication. I used to hate going by the fire station in case it went off. @ol2fiddy My Grandfather fought in the war against the Italians and after that against Germans here in Greece.

@lukekellycopy A nice thought, but there's no way on earth you'd hear an air raid siren from the air, especially over the drone of a bombers engines, even at low level.
LOL my city has exactly this one LOL!!!! idk how I found it but it's the same :D I live in San Carlos, Chile ^^ lmfao anyway it's scary o.o lol if any gringo comes to my city u'll hear this scary siren everyday xD!
where i live (france brest) a air siren goes off every first wendsday of the month at 12 o clock (lunch time) and i allways look at the sky to see if any bombers are coming cause you never know....
we got fed this propaganda shit via movies and even our local school that the russians would nuke us at anytime , and fed us fear mongering from ww11 video clips and these fuckin air raid sirens and it was all a lie to justify the cold war.
As a child I was outside our kitchen back door and looking up at the paint tins on top of the wall when the air raid siren started. For some reason I was fascinated by the golden sun on one of the paint tins when suddendly I was grabbed and quickly rushed indoors when seconds later a German bomber came across the houses straffing them and the bullets went straight down the path where I was playing.. Close shave for me But thanks to my Grand mother she saved my life that day.
@JohnDeereRB Same here.. which is strange because I know that a lot of people actually came to their death after hearing these sirens all over Europe.
Unfortunatly the V2 did not announce its arrival to everyone, just an almighty bang and a hole 30ft deep. It vapourised anyone it landed on as it did on Bauwns factory in Walthamstow London at 14.22 one afternoon when everyone had just come back from dinner and 108 were injured and lost.
@TheImmigrantsong It's not a matter of loving war itself, and all the horrible things that happen during war. It's a matter of having a loving interest for war...
@TheImmigrantsong The technology, the strategy, the weaponry, etc. All of it is fascinating. Just because you love all of that doesnt mean you love the deaths that occur during the war. Your pretty ignorant if you think that...
@TheImmigrantsong Yeah, those are the ignorant people that have no understanding of what war is. I love the honor, camaraderie, heroism, patriotism, technology, strategy, weaponry, etc. that you only see in times of war. Which is why it is so damn attracting to so many people including myself.
let me guise- born in Switzerland, Canada, Australia or any other country in which your only experience with war is playing computer games. I hear this sound- my body almost runs by itself to the closest shelter- an action I'm quite familiar with. War is man kind at its worst. NO ONE likes war.
@Akoplewitz Dunno if you know mate but Canada and Australias soldiers fought valiantly for the Commonwealth in both WW1 and WW2. We owe them a debt of gratitude. Not to mention they continue to help us in current conflicts.
@Akoplewitz and there's sickos here who actually enjoy the sound and get off to war. I bet if they were in the front lines, they'd be singing a whole different tune!
@mEtzG3rX are you loose in the head or are you some call of duty addicted teenager who knows nothing about war. i have Served in afghan and the 2nd gulf wwar. they are nothing compared to the 2 great wars but i can tell u i have seen some nasty shit and your tone makes me fuckin sick. i wish they would ship dis-respectful arseholes like your self to the front lines, then tell me what you think of war!
A truly chilling sound and very reminiscent of WW2- I can imagine the fear but necessary stoism that residents of London's East End had to face night after night. And not just the East End, but many other parts of London, Birmingham, Bristol, Coventry, Belfast, Sheffield, Liverpool, Clydebank, Manchester, Plymouth, Cardiff.... the list goes on....
my great gran was born just before ww1 & looked after evaquees in ww2, i used to love listening to all her stories, and The Imperial War museum in London will never get boring, no matter how many times i visit it.
i remember going in an Air raid shelter (simulater) at the museum, was so emotional. R.I.P all our fallen soldiers, brave heroes. xx
Look ma planes GET AWAY HURRY!!!!! 0:35Why ma THERE DROPPING BOM-er just get in Whats the bang sound Fireworks why are sirens goin off cause there dangurous and may hit somthing So fire works are dangurous wit fire works yes highly exsplosive fireworks
A very chilling sound. Does anyone know did the sirens vary from city to city; did every major industrial centre even have them. Birmingham, Portsmouth, Coventry, Sheffield, Bristol, Belfast, Liverpool and many other British cities were also badly bombed but im not sure if these particular sirens were unique to London?
I'm directing a one act about a post-nuclear London this semester. @tigerbait134
let me guise- born in Switzerland, Canada, Australia or any other country in which your only experience with war is playing computer games.

So in future, keep schtum.
BigHairyEngine 9 months ago
@Akoplewitz and there's sickos here who actually enjoy the sound and get off to war. I bet if they were in the front lines, they'd be singing a whole different tune!

A truly chilling sound and very reminiscent of WW2- I can imagine the fear but necessary stoism that residents of London's East End had to face night after night. And not just the East End, but many other parts of London, Birmingham, Bristol, Coventry, Belfast, Sheffield, Liverpool, Clydebank, Manchester, Plymouth, Cardiff.... the list goes on....

my heart dropped hearing this.
my great gran was born just before ww1 & looked after evaquees in ww2, i used to love listening to all her stories, and The Imperial War museum in London will never get boring, no matter how many times i visit it.
i remember going in an Air raid shelter (simulater) at the museum, was so emotional. R.I.P all our fallen soldiers, brave heroes. xx

During the war this is one sound you hope to never hear because it meant iminent air raid,
andrewwatson39 1 year ago
@andrewwatson39 Or incoming missles that the Germans used against the British.
Allen7111 1 year ago
@andrewwatson39 Actually, this is the one sound you wanted to hear, because the sustained 30 second siren was the all-clear signal.

Thanks
