You know something I've noticed? The narrator/protagonist of this story is ALWAYS portrayed as a man. But in the story, Poe never actually specifies wether the protagonist is male or female. Most people just assumed it was a male. I'd like to see an adaption of this story with a woman as the narrator/protagonist.
@TheImmortalmetal I loved Poe when I was your age too. I was thinking the same thing as I watched this: "I was not a 'normal' teenager" :-) Blew my mind too! :-)
Bone chilling; again, how is it that ts eliot did not get this? Putting himself at the time of the inquisition, as symbolism, Poe managed to give the most precise description of depression.
listening to this guy read is always makes this story easier to read-- the voice in my head that i hear when i read is too monotone and wont let me fully appreciate Poe's work
First i am so glad that my English teacher had us read this in class because i never would of known about it and second I love Poe...hes my favorite poet!! And Vincent Price is amazing him and Poe's poetry go perfect together...its like he was born to narrarate Poe's poems!!
yeah but they did an experiment on a show in the history channel where with a brand new machine with a brand new blade and the gears all new and not in horrible condition that ones back in the day would prolly be and it only got an inch into a chicken breast before it stopped
Did this experiment construct a giant massive 100 pound pendulum as described by Poe weighted down with a razor sharp cresent blade on the end of it about a foot wide, or was it nothing more than a basic grandfather clock pendulum with a sharp edge to it that someone stuck a raw chicken under?
@cha5 Also, he mentions that the pendulum retreated back to the ceiling after he escaped, as if he had been watched the whole time. Someone could have been swinging it the whole time.
@851852093114208513 The pendulum is a massive clockwork instrument that once it's set into motion it's completely unstoppable, like Time itself slowly but surely marking off one's lifetime.
The narrator even even gets the idea while he's tied down that
"Could I have broken the fastenings above the elbow, I would have seized and attempted to arrest the pendulum. I might as well have attempted to arrest an avalanche!"
watching this again, i become aware this man was a great stage actor and the way it translates onto film comes off too large (not overdone) for the screen on his best films
my boosem! lol price was awsome

An amazing performance, but this seems to be an abridged version of Poe’s story. Full length readings on youtube last about 30 or 40 minutes.

i saw that comment, of course a pendulum can kill. we're talkin about 100 pound blade attached to a 50 pound rod swinging with forceful momentum.

@851852093114208513 Well the narrator comes to that realization when the pendulum is withdrawn back into the ceiling,
"My every motion was undoubtedbly watched."
