Just a flat out wonderful joyous two minutes of Camden NJ soul. Home of Campbell Soup and Patti and the Emblems -- both mmm mmm good. Thank you Patti for this cherished contribution to the happiness that was the summer of 1964.
I was 15 when this came out. I didn't know what Northern Soul was then. All I knew is that I couldn't dance to The Beatles or Beach Boys. Ya know what? I think I am going to have a sock hop in our living room this year. Maybe on my birthday!
I always thought this record should have gotten much higher on the charts than it did (it hit #37). Blame it on poor promotion, and everyone being so nuts then about the Beatles, I guess.
@vinylsingleman YOU ARE SOOOO CORRECT....THOSE THINGS FROM BRITAIN REALLY #$%&^* MUSIC UP FOR AMERICA....PATTY AND THE EMBLEMS, THE SAPPHIRES, THE LIST GOES ON AND ON....THESE GROUPS DID'NT STAND A CHANCE
Not only did Patti have REAL talent but she sounded like a genuinely nice woman as well. This song has to be in the Top 100 of the greatest records of all time! Thanks for posting this song.
I would like to Thank you for posting my mothers music on the "TUBE". The late Patti ( Patricia Warren- Russell -Hamilton ) is the mother of six children: Dawn Russell , Ronald Russell,Robin Russell,Chris Hamilton, Doria Hamilton,Michael Hamilton. I speak for the family and say Thank You ! BBLESS, Chris Hamilton
Soul group Patty & the Emblems formed in Camden, NJ, around lead singer Patty Russell; they scored their lone Top 40 hit in 1964 with "Mixed-Up, Shook-Up Girl." ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
A~dog, I scrolled back and read your earlier remark about you first hearing this song thinking it was Dusty Springfield. I would have liked to hear Dusty cover this tune. Not to one-up it mind you, but rather just to give it a go because Dusty was always one of my very favourite female artists. You also mentioned that the wonderful voice of "Mixed-Up, Shook-Up, Girl" singer Patty Russell passed away in 1998 leaving us with a great song, A~dog, YOU are so right. It's an Oldie but Goodie...
Am I mistaken or did this video scene take place in a dance hall somewhere in England? As I seem to be unfamiliar with the general style of dress or for that matter the very dance steps. Notwithstanding those facts I rather like the fun-loving spirit of the post!
BigIron, I could be wrong, but after watching the video several times, I think that this is the famous Wigan Casino dance hall in England. It was THE place to be for this type of music. It was huge, but had a reputation for drawing a rough crowd. I think that, based on their similar dress, the male dancers might be military men and the girls appear to be locals. Just a guess on my part.
A~dog, I looked into the Wigan Casino Dance HALL in England and I believe you are on the money! What a cool joint that must have been. `60's Soul Music was MY thing and I used to frequent every club there was! So when I saw these kids jamming all the joy came back to me about when I used to dance all night long just as vigourously with my T-BOWL crowd. A-dog, thanks a million for your tip
Saaay, Vincent50 my story somewhat echoes yours. I too picked up a Greatest Hits of 1964 album, in maybe `65, and I had never heard of this cut either. I live only fifteen minutes outside of NYC and I'm familiar with all the groups so I kinda figured hey, they're a West Coast group. Come to find out only after seeing this tidbit on Lou's post that P&ThE are a Camdem, NJ group!
This is such a great old tune. I remember seeing her at a dance in 1965 at a Knights of Columbus Hall here in Connecticut (remember 'record hops' anyone?) What a delightful post. Thanks.
I LOVE this song. I dedicated this back in 1964 to one of my cousins who was Miss Snooty Booty. It was in a small town in VA and everyone heard the dedication. And that was a serious ROMP going on in that old tape!
I belonged to a record club in 1966. I was a mere kid but when one of the albums I purchased had hits of 1964. This song was one of them and it was the first time I heard it. Well, mom loved this song and to this day it sounds just as good. Thanks for posting.
Soultime....where have you been?!!! The Northern Soul side of things on you tube have been distinctly lacking over the last few weeks or so....but hey, it looks like normal service is resuming. Can you post "The Hesitations, I'm not built that way" A great tune that doesn't seem to get a lot of airplay.10/10 for Patti and the Emblems. KTF.
phoenix251 ~ I never heard of "I'm Not Built That Way" but...two tracks that I am familiar with by The Hesitations are "Born Free" and "Who Will Answer" from back in the late `60's. I have both on 45RPM. I am a short ride outside of NYC/USA, am I correct in assuming that YOU are from GB and are familiar with The Hesitations? Reason being...they are NOT too well known even in their own country. Odd how record distributors have a logic only they understand.
Love it!!! One of the best soul oldies - the BEST music in the world!!!

It should have been a number 1 song in my opinion. Was this song introduced in 1962?

I used to play this song on WHK, Cleveland, Ohio in the 60s. It has the best girl group sound ever! Should have been #1!

Primo,
I think that the various clubs back then had their own patch. This one is from Wigan Casino, I believe. Some people collect them now.
