You may have not thought long and hard about that dumb comment. Tyler Perrys movies are number 1 because he makes good movies. Why Did i get Married didnt have Madea in it and it STILL made number 1 at the box office so what are you talking about?

His movies are number 1 because they are laden with stereotypes - no other reason.If Tyler Perry made a well thought out phychological thriller with an all black cast, it would do NOTHING at the box office, simply because white America WANTS to see blacks acting like buffoons, they are not interested in seeing blacks as intelligent and insightful people on screen.You think long and hard about that.

I think some people are MISSING the point. Spike is successful in his own right, and is just providing HIS perspective. He should have spoke to Tyler in person with his concerns. But, I don't think he's hating on him. You know you can have an opinion without being labeled a hater. They are both talented, just on very different levels.

We have to realize that Spike Lee is trying to get attention. What he needed to do is go to Tyler Perry in person and talk to him about it. When you say things in public and let the media get behind it, that's trouble. I don't know Spike lee motives but he was wrong. He needs to learn self control and respect. I'm starting to believe that black people are like crabs in a bucket. When one try to get on top you have another trying to pull him down. Spike is just jealous and want money.

I agree that spike lee maybe not saying that on national tv, however the biggest problem is that we as black people think that if we give a negative opinion of somethin or someone, we're hating or we're jealous. Spike has always been about forwarding us as a race and as people, and his opinion stems from that, not getting money or getting more famous.

He probably gets mad or frustrated by the fame or numbers tyler perry is getting because he may feel like his life-work is being undermined.

I appreciate your video response & the discussion it creates. I have bi-racial kids & fight stereotypes of both b & w people. EA are shown as racist, rich, ignorant, dumb, rhythm-less people who wish they could be as cool as AA in movies often. My kids hear how evil & racist white heterosexual males are-as did I when I was growing up-this caused me to view my own dad, uncles & gpa in neg. light. W/ my desire to end that kind of generational racism I decided to date outside my race.

Some Madea responses remind me of my 82 y.o. gma who speaks her mind- some of its wisdom, some not so much. We need to start realizing there are some things unique to cultures and races but there are even more similarities to our humanity that are universal to us all.

I think any talented actor regardless of race should be able to portray a pos or neg character if they are casted as such w/out that character representing any 1race. There are + & - character traits in all. The issue w/stereotypes comes up when no depth characters are developed-which is the beauty of Madea and Mr. Brown--we get to know the many sides of the character through the episodes & movies--many of us can relate to their rational & irrational sides.

I do not want my children to think less of themselves because they have black or white heritage and certainly I need to help them to fight the black and white stereotypes too. As a family we have been able to use TP's movie to discuss important issues regarding family, faith, forgiveness, stereotypes and choices + cry & laugh together. While most of Spike's movies also address real issues unfortunately most are not as family friendly as TPs.

i dont think Spike Lee was being a hater. He was saying what all of us have been saying. Madea = coonery. Mr. Brown= Bafoonery. I had one of my white friends tell me that she LOVES tyler perry movies and i asked why and she laughed her white ass off and said because she loves Mr.Brown and Madea. Why must everything be so WAITED with us? Who looks at Ben Stiller, Jack Black, or Steve Carrell and says that it's limiting and insulting to white people? When will get to the point where we can all express ourselves in whichever way we choose? Without our characters having to hold the weight of the entire race on our shoulders?

@sugarobyn You know that Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and/or Steve Carell's work will never be look at as/considered 'insulting to white people,' as you put it, because whites don't have a centuries-old history of racism, oppression, denigration, and systematic genocide. You knew that before you even typed that. Whites don't have to (And frankly, NEVER WILL) worry about going to see a Jack Black or Adam Sandler (For example) movie and explaining away the actor(s') acting buffoonish.
