You should check out Colhane's "Home made water filter". I have taken his idea and applied it to my camp/bugout gear. It works well, but you STILL have to purify the water with either iodine, bleach, or boiling.
I've seen one that's similar and works great with a military canteen. All you do is poke some holes in the bottom of a 35mm film bottle and just stuff the bottle with coffee filters or cotton balls then just set it on top of the canteen and pour water in the top so it filters threw, down into the canteen.

How about making one from the following materials:
A cut in half 2 liter bottle
Gravel
Sand
rocks
Cotton
1 coffee filter
and filter water that has oil, mud, and stuff like that

pretty cool but too impractical, taking 6 minutes to filter like 10 ml water. i'd rather go with one of the bigger ones
