Let me see if I understand this, if you rent an apartment I can understand paying for a parking spot, but you also have to pay the government to park at your house that you own?
OMG why are JP cars so much neater looking.... they all are so practical.... NO extra weird stuff like US cars....unless i lived in country side I would not have a car there.
finance.yahoo.com/currency-converter, it fills in the latest FOREX rates automaticaly. If public transit cann't get you where you need to go in time and you absolutely must drive yourself somewhere in Japanese metroplitan areas, doing so on a motorcycle or even a scooter is the way to go. You slice through the worst of the traffic, pay a lot less on toll roads, and can park for free almost everywhere you go. Look for courier riders in Tokyo near your destination and follow them at a distance.
Oh I put my windscreen wipers up when it's cold, icy and snowy... so that they don't touch the windscreen. I live in Finland which is pretty North. It helps to prevent the wipers getting stuck on the glass. If that happens and you by mistake turn the wipers on, you can do damage to the wipers - and maybe even to the electronics that drive them if they are not protected against this.
And yeah I definitely don't do this when it's not Winter. But maybe the Japanese have found some reason to do it in the Summer too - they tend to take things seriously I have noticed.
I am looking for a car right now- But I am a little worried I see plenty of cars on sale for 200000Y in great shape with shaken until 2012. But if I want to actually buy it will there be a lot of extra costs? Seems too cheap to be true....
they REALLY have bad car taste... oh common 0_0 IF they can afford a car, then they can afford a mercedes? right??, where is mercedes actually...? omf* :O
I don't think this "wipers up" thing makes sense except in below freezing weather. As for protecting the wipers in hot weather, it would have to be REALLY hot (at least 100 degrees f) for there to be any danger that the hot glass would damage the rubber wipers. And even then I question that there would be any danger.
It is an interesting idea that makes sense in sub-freezing temperatures (I will try it in Chicago), but otherwise, it's a practice that makes no sense.
Very interesting video as usual! I have noticed a lot of similarities, namely owning a car in a big city here is not worth it too. I live in one of the most expensive cities in the US (San Francisco), and I had to sell my car before I moved here to attend school. Very limited parking, astronomical insurance and registration rates, high gas prices, etc. I'm just thankful for public transportation and having two feet!
I was watching.... I was watching. I'm actually thinking about getting a car. But I'm on a tight tight budget. Under 15 man with at least 6 months shakken. preferably a kei car. wish me luck!
Maybe it's the caffeine but I would like to give you a big hug! Thanks for showing us all sides of Japan. *can't wait 'till next video, jitters in seat*
あれ車はとても小さいです。 They almost look like toys don't they? It makes since though since Japanese people are small to and space is very tight. Imagine trying to park a big huge car/ truck over there. Thanks for the info if i visit I'll stick to public transportation.
I saw all your videos about buy a car in japan, but what about if you already have a car in your country and you want to bring it to japan. Would that even be possible? I learn a lot with all your videos, hope you keep more videos coming XD
Is there street parking in Japan? In New York, I don't have to pay to park my car but only if I go to certain places. Everyday after work I would just look for a space near where I live, and park there for free.
there is a currency converter implemented in google!
for example just type: "333000 Yen in US-Dollar" in the search box (also works with other currencies) and you'll have the price of the first car shown in the video^^
google always uses the latest currency exchange rate.
mmmm im known that yellow tag car shaken costs like 5 man yen around and the white one cost 10 man yen around , 15 is too expensive, gotta check your sources
The only thing I might add is that if you guy a yellow tag car the prices are much, much cheaper than a white tag car. Yellow tag cars have smaller engines and are more narrow.
Waycool vid. Thanks. I always like seeing what kind of cars other countries have. Nissan just braught one out in the US called a Juke. Cute little thing but a bit too small for me I think.
@TheJapanChannelDcom, I've seen a video where someone owns a Jeep Grand Wagoneer (FSJ) in Japan. These things are huge and I was wondering how does one go and own such a huge vehicle in Japan?
@cjthenoisemaker I've seen a hummer once or twice in my small city and frankly looks quite ridiculous. Gas is expensive, roads can be very very narrow, and finding replacement parts for import vehicles must be very hard if not impossible. Having a vehicle that can only go down less than half the roads seems pointless considering the cost. If someone really wants a huge import car though they could find a way to make it work.
Very nice job. Always so helpful. You dont get these interesting facts from any other sites. Now if only I could learn the language, I would feel totally at ease in Japan.
Some of the cars in this video display numbers (like 22, 18, ...), which, I believe, are years of manufacture, where 22=2010 and so on.
Anything around 10 years old is going to cost less than 50man yen to buy and nil to sell. Although these prices are mostly commissions it's very rare (read: I've never heard of anyone doing it) to buy a car from a private seller. That perhaps has a lot to do with all the paper work and perceived transaction safety.
The car prices here are comparable to a used car lot here in the US, at least the more respectable ones out of dealerships. But yeah, owning a car in Japan is expensive. My in-laws have a rare thing for a home - an in-house garage, not a carport! They live in the city (though the wife claims its countryside), so it is rare even for them. Her dad used to be a hashiriya (street racer) who enjoys scenic drives so it's natural for him, though it is expensive.
@TheJapanChannelDcom Many countries, not only Japan, won't let you use International Driving Permit (IDP) when you are staying for over 6 months and requires you to switch to their driving license. With the IDP, you can get away from license revocation or suspension from speeding, etc.
Just go onto google and type ##### yen in CAD/USD/Euro etc etc...
It wont be exact but it will give you an idea. Then its best to go to the place your looking to make the currency exchange at and ask the rates they have.
Are the prices in Japan fairly negotiable on these prices or are they set in stone. I have heard that in many countries the price is never even negotiated and I know that here in the states its often the first thing to be talked about when purchasing the car. Also how quickly do values depreciate, it looks like fairly new cars are being sold rather cheaply or I converted the prices wrong xD. Thanks for your time
Your videos dealing with motorcycles all shed them in a negative light... Let's see some videos that show the joys and raw awsome-ness of motorcycling(with an in Japan angle) please! m(_ _)m
US Dollars or Australian Dollars? Right now 10,000 yen is 122.88 USD, 124.37 AUD. Google is extremely good that way. Google for "10000 JPY in USD" or "10000 JPY in AUD."
Yeah, yen is running high right now. Which means it's time for me to visit the US and go shopping.
Wow, gas is expensive! 150Y/L... almost 4 liters in a gallon, so 150 times 3.7 which is roughly 555 yen a gallon... and that's like 6.7 US dollars. :O!
@gloomybearx3 150 yen at the moment means 1,32 EUR per liter which would be very cheap in Germany. Our gas prices usually fluctuate between 1.40 and 1.50 EUR per liter. :-(
It's fairly cheap for a car in good condition. All the cars in this video are surprisingly cheap. 5k €, 4k € etc. Those must be used cars (and TheJapanChennelDcom clarified it). In Europe new "regular" cars cost 20-40k €. Sports cars / tuned cars / luxurious cars are usually 50k +++. Used cars in similar condition to those in this video are usually 10-20k €. You will find many rip offs under 10k,and occasionally a bargain. Butom line, good prices for used cars in Japan
Sounds very similar to Italy, regarding mandatory check-ups, cost of parking slots and assurances prices. On some models you showed us here, especially the first ones, the prices seem extremely good - I guess they are second-hand cars.
Main difference is Japan has an incredibly good public transportation.
@TheJapanChannelDcom ah, makes sense. My friend lives in Yokohama and he even said its not worth it for him to purchase a car and he's signed to a record label and has to transport his gear for live shows.
So BananaaMoon...lol :P I think the best option for a car is the Auction...thats where I got my car for cheap $1800 but with JCI, regular insurance and road tax i paid $2700 about what cost me the most was the insurance because you have to pay in full. Japanese people take very good care of their cars so a hand me down wouldn't hurt.
When I saw the 33 yen tag on that car (before you said that it's in man) I thought that the japanese are insane selling the cars at the price of a candy :P
Love your car related videos! Any chance we could talk you into checking out Daikoku PA or Umihotaru PA on your next trip to Tokyo? Keep up the great work!

33,3 x 10000 Yen = 3000 €

They were all used cars.

@TheJapanChannelDcom Ah ok. Might I ask if you stated that cars are not a worthy investment in Japan, why do you drive?

@TheJapanChannelDcom ah, makes sense. My friend lives in Yokohama and he even said its not worth it for him to purchase a car and he's signed to a record label and has to transport his gear for live shows.

@TheJapanChannelDcom
I did the math, and it's roughly 568.50yen ($6.99 American Dollars) for one gallon of gas in Japan.

@TheJapanChannelDcom does that make japanese people not want them as much? dont they like new things?

So BananaaMoon...lol :P I think the best option for a car is the Auction...thats where I got my car for cheap $1800 but with JCI, regular insurance and road tax i paid $2700 about what cost me the most was the insurance because you have to pay in full. Japanese people take very good care of their cars so a hand me down wouldn't hurt.

When I saw the 33 yen tag on that car (before you said that it's in man) I thought that the japanese are insane selling the cars at the price of a candy :P
