It is lovely to listen to thee beautiful sheikhs. Ironic to see the 2 "look at me and my muscles" guys who are bigger in physical stature but dwarfs spiritually as evidenced the way they are carrying themselves. Even when questioning, they don't give the impression of humility. AND I don't speak Arabic. I may be wrong. It seems to me that many of Muslims are pure ARROGANT, and they don't realize it. God knows best. May Allah (SWT) guide us to purify our hearts.
Hamza Yusuf: We were with the Dr last year at London. I've known Dr Abdul Hakim for nearly fifteen years now. Unfortunately in this age of ours many Muslims do not seek to benefit from other peoples and they consider anything foreign...I mean practicing Muslims from a religious perspective...anything foreign to have no value...
Winter: This is from ancient factionalism, and has no basis in the Qur'an and sunna or the tradition of Muslims, premodern or modern. (cont)
(Winter reads verse "We made you tribes and nations that you may know one another"). Does such a verse exist in any religious besides, I do not think so. And this is our approach, meaning "wisdom is the lost animal of the believer" (hadith). However in this age unfortunately due to the fear many youngsters have of the supremacism of the west over all Muslim lands, they resort to this belief, and this belief is hatred of anything new and anything foreign.
They think the honour and victory of Islam will be through this isolationism. But this is not the Islamic way, and this is contrary to Allah's sunna in history. The peoples which were successful and their values spread and appeared strongly through history are the people who were well established in seeking benefit from others.
Hamza: Yes.
Winter: And this is a problem. For example, every year, I have new Jewish or Christian students at Cambridge University, who wish to have
a good opinion about other religions, so I teach them and make them understand. Then they request from me that I arrange a visit for them to the mosque. At this, I stop, because I cannot do this! Because I know when they enter the mosque there will come to them one who does not understand their spiritual and educational needs, and may insult them or ask women to dress in a certain way even if outside times of worship, or they be present at a sermon that is hot and angry all about modern politics
I know for cetain these people will be driven away by this. This is a huge problem for dawa in the West.
Hamza: When we read the Qur'an we find the focus of the Qur'an is mostly firstly on Tawhid and secondly on good character. It is as though when the Prophet said "Say: I believe in Allah, and then be steadfast" he was summarising the meaning of Islam in Tawhid and ethics. And unfortinately these two fundamentals of the religion are greatly neglected in Muslim conversations
