The "Jewish people" and the "nation of Israel" are one and the same. It's true there is now a modern state of Israel and so not all Jews are "Israelis" (yet). But all through the scriptures the Jewish people are called the "nation of Israel". This is because Jews are descendants of "Jacob" who was also called Israel

I would advise you, though, to make a distinction between the genres themselves, and the sub-cultures surrounding them. Just as Matisyahu is not a member of a violent gang, and does not promote the casual consumption of narcotics, promiscuity or a purely capitalist mentality, neither do so many other artists producing both Hip-Hop and Reggae. If you overcome this pejorative generalisation, you may allow yourself to witness some truly inspirational music :)

Shawnferd, you are correct in saying it is a religion, but you are incorrect about it not being a nationality too. As an orthodox Jew, I can tell you that it is actually both. The "Jewish people" and the "nation of Israel" are one and the same. It's true there is now a modern state of Israel and so not all Jews are "Israelis" (yet). But all through the scriptures the Jewish people are called the "nation of Israel". This is because Jews are descendants of "Jacob" who was also called Israel

In all the 613 commandments of the Torah (there are more than just the original 10), nothing is said about music. Furthermore you won't find it in the New Testament either. I understand the reasons for your prejudice against Hip-Hop though: Modern mainstream examples tend to consist of lines promoting drugs, promiscuity, gang violence or the concept that the acquisition of money is the ultimate pursuit. I've always associated Reggae with both peace and Rastafari, so not sure where you gained your negative view regarding it?

I would advise you, though, to make a distinction between the genres themselves, and the sub-cultures surrounding them. Just as Matisyahu is not a member of a violent gang, and does not promote the casual consumption of narcotics, promiscuity or a purely capitalist mentality, neither do so many other artists producing both Hip-Hop and Reggae. If you overcome this pejorative generalisation, you may allow yourself to witness some truly inspirational music :)

Reggae is essentially a slowed down form of Ska, itself a genre formed by the fusion of Calypso and Caribbean Mento (Folk music). Many prominent Reggae artists are/were Rastafari (An Abrahamic religion worshipping Jah (God) and believing in Jesus as the incarnation of God on earth) including Bob Marley. So these musical styles don't emerge because of a desire to gain promotion and success, and many Hip-Hop and Reggae artists express their religious devotion via their music.
