Hi Emi, thanks for a great video you are such a wonderful teacher. Question: does that first slip stitch in the chain count at a stitch when following a pattern?
@Hectanooga1 Okay thank you! Do you have to turn your work around after each round? And would you consider doing a video on how to change colors while crocheting in the round? I can do it, just not very well. You can see an irregular "seam" where I start the new round and add the new color.
It's my first time I managed to make something in circle. It came wrong, totally wavy the edges, then I tried again. I just had to pay more attention to your steps.
So I am trying to make a bag to carry yarn to croche while I am standing/walking. So how do I make the bag's yarn stiff, do I have to use specific yarn, or I use very small hook. I used 6.50mm(J) and used yearn 4 medium. Another thing how do I linen inside the bag, cardboard, felt, what? So that it shapen up better the bag. Thanks.
@supermelodia Use worsted weight yarn as you did, and a smaller crochet hook... size 5mm will turn out a dense finished product. If you would like the bag to have a flat, firm bottom, cut out a piece of cardboard and place it inside in the bottom of the bag. (Use 2 layers of cardboard if you need to). Have fun! (Or crochet to fit over a plastic ice-cream bucket and place that inside.)
This method doesn't seem to want to work for me. It tends to just expand, where it's too big... I don't even understand what I could possible be doing wrong.
@tionluvs2dance2music After increasing for 3 rows.... there are no more increases in stitches... therefore the hat should start to curl in, (like a hat would), because each succeeding row will have the same number of stitches over and over and over.
@Hectanooga1 I see... I'll have to try again sometime. I've done moved on to something else with the yarn. Thank you. Oh! But what if after the 3 increasing rows, it starts to curl in and it seems to small or still too big? Maybe it's the way I hold the yarn. I hold it in my most comfortable way be, and holding it the common way doesn't work for me at all!
If I want to continue incresing the circle to make a pillow for example how can I do it? thank you!! regards from Spain ;) So sorry for my english! :C
To make a round pillow, after completing the instructions in this video, you can begin working in a spiral, (which means to crochet continuously in a circle), and increase every 4th stitch, by making 2 stitches in every 4th stitch. If the work begins to ripple before you have reached your desired size, simply increase in every 5th stitch, instead of every 4th.
@MsKdnoble It may be that you are slip stitching to join in the wrong stitch, and so the beginning chain 2 gets the opportunity to lay sideways instead of being pulled upright.
At 9:01 in the video, that is the end of increase in stitches. From there on, you will be making 1 double crochet in each stitch around, and the work should begin to curl then.
Once you stop increasing, the work has no option but to curl. Could that be it? For the remainder of the work, you should have 40 stitches around for every row.
I must be slow cause I'm still having trouble. I've watched 4 times. Mine looks more like a Beret. Too large. And the more rounds it looks more like a place mat. Never does curl. What am I doing wrong
Thank you so much! I am enjoying your videos so much and I have actually made several of the chunky style baby hats this week! I am so excited! Your videos are very helpful and easy to understand!
Great video Emi. You do an excellent job explaining how to crochet properly. Showing the common mistakes and what not-to-do is so important in the learning process. As an absosute beginner, I so greatly appreciate your videos and explanations. Thank you.
thank you so much i agree with 44Christina that this was so easy to understand. I spent so much time lokking for a video. The only other one i saw was on a single crochet hat and i kept warping it up. It was definetly made for more advanced people.
THANK YOU!! Finally a video that is slow enough to follow, perfectly explained and very clear video. It really helped that you showed where NOT to crochet too. I have seriously watched video after video on here trying to figure out how to make a hat, none of them have come anywhere near the quality of yours. I finally know how to do it now : )
thankyou for your tutorial. i am still learning, but you're a great teacher.

@TinkaC01 Hi Tinka... no, the slip stitch doesn't count as a stitch... it's sole function is as a connector.

@TinkaC01 Yes, you should turn after each round. Also, I shall put it on my to-do list to make a video on changing color.

@tionluvs2dance2music You may be increasing stitches somewhere along the way...
once you begin to make only one stitch in each row of stitches, it can't possibly continue to expand.
