Starcraft is more of "Cowboys in space"

Warhammer 40k is more of a combination of sci fi and fantasy

Also Starcraft is more wild west north americanish in character whereas dawn of war is more cyberpunkish with some fantasy themed to it as if showing the fantasy setting of fantasy version of warhammer. As for key similarities, the gameplay relies heavily on skill, even with Dawn of War II's RPG elements which i find completely awesome.

@MrPhatcatt No, it pretty much is. The Blizzdevs put so much into WoW, that they forgot the dark atmosphere and gritty feeling the original SC had. Even the plot for the Zerg (spoiler alert) is akin to the Orcs' enslavement to Mannoroth from Warcraft III. It's sad, really.

@Mercanyin2 Calm down, dude. Did you even read my comment? Let me say it again: Their story is borrowed from a game that they (Blizzard) created. Warcraft III came out in 2002 and put in elements from that game and put it in SC2. There was little to no effort in making an original plot, and so they recycled it from an earlier game. They spent ten years making their game look pretty rather than seriously make a true sequel.

@ubertuberification I have no problem with the gameplay at all. I love it, in fact. I'm saying the plot was all too similar to a previous game made by Blizzard. That in itself is disappointing. Too much pretty visuals and not enough originality. It's as if the events of Brood War never happened and instead took a canned idea and re-used it.

...okay, no one's arguing that 40K is a huge factor in SC (I hope...). But where does 'huge' come into play? If you actually put the two universes side by side... they're not really that similar. At most you could nail down the Terran Marine (at least aesthetically) and the Zerg, but Protoss/Eldar is tenuous at best and the politics and theme of StarCraft are so anti-40K it gets sort of hard to compare them.

@Softmarrow starcraft and warhammer i would say are different but have minor comparisons because warhammer is a shit universe whereas starcraft is more half and half when it comes to settings. As for gameplay, Dawn of War II seems to use more rpg mechanics (which i find awesome) and Starcraft is more fast paced like Team Fortress 2 is a very fast paced shooter. The similarities would be the RTS elements and some minor faction comparisons, both are awesome games though in my opinion.
