I can't help it every time I hear Duran Duran I am automatically back in my teenage yrs w/ the volume cranked way up singing( no matter how badly) all the words...aah youth it may be fleeting but Duran Duran will always be here to stay (not mention they are getting better w/ age). Even though I am a forever DD fan I honestly have to say that I admire & applaud any band the isn't afraid to try new sounds, win or loose and that's why I think DD has been around so long. You can def. tell all the w
@DaftSwank: John Taylor talked about that marketing exec on the "Rio: Classic Albums" DVD. He specifically said that this radio marketer's report suggested that in order to best sell appliances, and trucks to middle American consumers, that guitar sounds and drum sounds, on songs, should sound like Van Halen, and AC/DC, etc. The folks at Capitol Records wanted DD, and other similar bands, to change their sound to fit that calculation, and it affectively killed New Wave within just a few years.
@DaftSwank: Maybe they'll listen and re-record some of the tracks of The Power Station with Simon on the lead vocals? I think of Kajagoogoo, in regard to their first album that Nick produced, and I often think DD's sound should have gone in a similar direction--however, the record industry, as influenced by an ad exec, wanted bands from the New Wave genre to sound more like AC/DC and Van Halen, as he felt it would help sell goods on radio? Power Station seems to have been groomed to do that.
PS: You might recall, the Beatles also had the screaming fan girls, but upon the release of the song Yesterday, it was clear that this band was deeper than their rivals, and soon the band completely changed, and their music went from poppy rock 'n roll, to devastatingly thoughtful lyrics...and orchestrated music, and they changed their image, from boys, to men, beards and all. The Sergeant Pepper album forever killed that teen idol label for the Beatles, and DD needed something akin to that.
Ronson is correct. Seven and The Ragged Tiger was not the album that it should have been. The same with Wild Boys, and A View To A Kill, respectively, as stand alone song releases. The Power Station and Arcadia further hurt the band. DD's debut album and Rio were brilliant. Their 3rd album should have been made to liberate them from the screaming girls, and from the teen idol tag, instead, they made their 3rd album...for that audience? They could have been the new Beatles--a missed opportunity.
@Swagaization: I often think that if the Arcadia and Power Station material were meshed and released as the Duran album after 7&TRT, it would've been their greatest ever. This, of course, couldn't be further from the remotest realm of possibilities in 1985 if it tried, but I -- as a lifelong Duran fan can dream -- can't I? If there is a parallel universe where this actually occured, I would like to visit it someday. Simon singing "Some Like It Hot" during their shows today is always a treat.
@DaftSwank: Actually, that is a great idea, really! You should be working at one of the record companies as a marketing exec. Those albums, at least the material for them, should have been steered toward a Duran Duran album, instead the band decided to do them as outside projects; I suspect for the money, as the royalty splits were bigger and they didn't have split the money 5 ways among the band. Still, it would be smart to re-market those albums as a Duran Duran release; Power Station Arcadia.
"Wrong after Rio???" I guess Mark Ranson has never heard of songs like "Skin Trade", "Come Undone", "Reach Up (For the Sunrise) " and a little tune named..."Ordinary World"!!! This record better be amazing for that kind of statement ; ). "All You Need Is Now" is amazing though. It's the kind of song that sticks in your head and doesn't leave. I personally believe that the album will be great!! Ronson is head & shoulders above Timbaland. I would love to see them work with Nile Rodgers again too!
@OreckBoy1 I think what Mark Ronson meant was that after Rio, it stopped being about the songwriting and the meshing of the electronic and rock and became more about glossy pop. Most of their albums since Rio, even The Wedding Album, are flawed to some degree, but that is OK. They're in a fantastic place as a band now and it makes their entire career as a whole all the more exciting.
Man who stole the leopard, Safe, All U Need Is Now, Girl Panic, Mediterrania & Leave a Light on are great my fav's at this stage ! Not sure on Being followed & Blame The Machine havent heard this in full yet.
If you havent heard The Devils album Nick made with TinTin you should. Dark Circles is an album with pre LeBon songs. Written and performed live then updated by Nick keeping the orig lyrics sung by TinTin. Listen to that and then listen to "All You Need is Now" the feel from the old Duran songs are there. Amazing work. They were serious when they said back to the roots ;) Mark might have said a followup to Rio but the material the boys had was deff 78-79 :)
2:43 I completely disagree that Duran Duran went off from their tracks after Rio. The follow up album Seven & the Ragged was the perfect next album for Rio. Where they more accurately went off the road was maybe the over the top Arena era or when they splintered and although Notorious is an amazing work the band had gone off exploring and losing their religion.
But I think that new album sounds like a continuation or return to their roots of their first (and yes Rio) album which is fantastic.

@chrisbacos ... I agree with u 1,000%... simon, shave that fucking shit form ur face... and ur single, all u need is now, SUCkS!!!!!!!! Ur still clueless about making ur band stand out again.
I really love this new song "All You Need Is Now", am a big DD fan. Check out "TAKE IT BACK" - QUESTION ft DURAN DURAN on my page hope i have done you proud, let me know what you think. Viva Duran Duran.
My honest opinion is that DD went wrong whenever they lost track of who they are (their strengths, their vision, their sense of fun). For me, that was during the "Liberty", "Pop Trash" and "Red Carpet Massacre" albums. Timbaland DOMINATED the DD sound; Ronson GUIDED it while RESPECTING the band's inherent talent. The result? Awesomeness (as opposed to carbon copied overkill).
Seven & The Ragged Tiger sounds dated (but I still love it in a nostalgic way).
Nice....I've seen other interviews where John speaks out about the Timbadouche thing. Not knowing what A guitar was...just his cheesy fake beats and stupid raps in the middle of the songs. Again...Duran is a BAND....drums, guitar, bass, and keyboards. Lets release Reportage and we'll see what the Band was really up to back then before they went astray and brought in the Timbajokes and RCM.
I like how they kinda bad mouth Timbaland for being lame. They should've found a way to release Reportage instead, then moved on to Ronson.
