  • WOW! all I could say is WOW! I'm awestruck! Keeping up with Al Dimiola on the Double Bass? OMG! His intonation is just ..... SPECTACULAR! and at such high speeds too! AND his lines are pertinent and make melodic and harmonic sense!

  • Thanks for posting this JazzFestLover - must have been spectacular to be there and feel it live - just brilliant

  • It's "Duels" not "Duals". Good grief.

  • wow. that was a good one

  • Very cool, but there not "dueling", so much as in perfect simbiosis......

  • YYR, Should have been "Dueting"! Whatever...next they all do it or (duo it?(), count me in. Twice.

  • this man madman :):):)

  • Just wish I had been there. Much talet on that stage.

  • i have stan and jean but never al, they are part of are rich innovative music history in america

  • Ponty is French.

  • u spealt canada rong u wrote cananda lol

  • Yeah...it is a lifelong affliction, I come from a town whose name begins Cananda (Canandaigua) and every once in awhile, like my fellow dyslexics everywhere, I slip but still cannot see.

  • i love this guy, don't know who the other guys are though

  • 54spiretedwill54:

The guitarist is Al Di Meola... guitar virtuoso and bandmate of Stanley in Return to Forever. Check out his solo stuff (especially the album Casino), and the RTF stuff.

The violinist is Jean Luc Ponty. If i remember correctly, he played in the Mahavishnu Orchestra, who are another amazing fusion band.

Stanley really shines in this clip, but look up the other guys, because they are all amazing, virtuoso musicians.

  • Jerry Goodman violin Mahavishnu Orch

  • Jerry Goodman was a stud (you have to be to play with McLaughlin)!

  • that is rediculous how fast he can pluck. he is the master.

  • i love the chilian pipe song any videos of that out there

  • I had the honour of shaking his hand at this concert! I felt like I had tiny hands... truly a master of his instrument!

  • I think its a beautiful thing to see two masters enjoying their craft and entertaining their following.

  • clarke's best bass playing, to me, has to be on "Sometime Ago", from Return to Forever.

  • ponty is the man!

  • isn´t the best part of show...there´s much more music than allucinate soloing, compositions, counterpoint , and interaction...

  • I WILL SELL MY BASS!

  • This is from a song they wrote to honor John Coltrane.

  • Stanley Clarke is my hero and biggest bass inspiration.. I am seeing these guys Sept. 20 in Philly, I cannot WAIT!

  • Never seen such flow going on on an upright, truly amazing. Listen to "light as a feather" (Chick Corea), Clarke smokes on this record...groove monster.

  • Just saw Stanley Clarke & Lenny White w/ Patrice Rushen @ the Blue Note on Saturday 3/24. Got to meet them after the show & get autographs. He also mentioned that he wouldn't rule out RTF getting back together eventually.

  • hahaha ive tried to shred on a stand up bass and it is soo hard. the action is like 50ft high. stanley is da man!!

  • Only because it isn't setup correctly....:)

  • had mine set up correctly... the difference is AMAZING. Have your axe done by a good luthier. Then practice, by friend, practice...

  • A. Stan is the man. Period

    B. His fingers have an extra digit (or 2)

    C. He's been playing since i was in jr high (i'm 50)

    D. He's one of the best player/composers on earth

    E. I got to jam with him in Dallas in early 80's

    F. That was pretty F'in cool!!

    G. Greatness in action!!

  • Here here... Got to jam with him, damn. I am jealous!

  • Yeah twas a pretty special night. Granada Theatre on Greenville Ave in Dallas. I was playing in a band at the time and went to see Stanley on a rare night off. Near the end of the show he asked a few local bass players to come up. Oh hell yeah!! I trampled people getting there!! He seemed to like my playing and although I was a jazz/rock bassist, he could tell I'd been listening to him!! It was awesome just shaking his hand:0

  • How good does it get? Not only did you get to jam with God's own representative on earth but he like your playing as well.

I bet there was a real stampede to get up there as well.

  • u don't know Al Di Meola and Jean Luc Ponty ? I recommend a quick youtube. They're great.

  • <3 this man

don't know who the other guys are, but they're also entertaining

  • I wept.

  • oh my!

  • that is fuckin insane! the psychobilly guys around my hood aint got shit on this vato!!!

  • if u talking about blood this is f.. blood and to see them in live what a lucky b..!

  • stanley clarke is amazing

  • Glad there still playing this kind of stuff. Seems there was a time that musicians weren't supposed to play too fast or else they'd get accused of being hotdogs. But if the stuff they are playing is musical, then let the dog off the leash, I say.

  • Here, here!!!

  • You hit it on the head: if it is MUSICAL then it is good. I've played with some major changerunners that can fly on the neck but there isn't a melodic bone in their bodies. Sometimes a minimal approach is required, sometimes it is balls out. The key is to listen and make music.

  • People like you exist :O. 100% agreed, its athletic, not musical ;)

  • i had never saw them in person...but i think al..its just fucking amazing¡¡

  • good lord, stanley tore it up...

  • clark is master

  • He's got incredible stability with his right hand for

playing so fast. He's utilizing some techniques found

more common in Flamenco guitar.I'm reminded of him at

A Newport show using chords with another Flamenco type

of strum.I'm sure he's aware of Jimmy Garrison's Bass

intro to Coltranes 'All My Favorite Things' off 'Live

at the Village Vangaurd Again' back in 66.Incredible!

  • oh man. great great stuff!

  • I saw Stanley and Al duel back in 1978 at a Return To Forever concert. They have only gotten better over the years. Love this stuff.

  • fantastic playing...but who blew it on the graphics? dual instead of duel? and cananda instead of canada? just an observation

  • I have never seen Stanley live, saw Al twice, including this past Spring, and Jean Luc twice, once front row. Thanks for posting this video!

  • this guys not that great.....i mean im atleast this good...

wait jk this guys a freakin beast on bass i shall rub this in my friends face seeing as how he believes hes gods gift to the bass.

  • crap that's amazing

  • I love this album, it's really cool to seem them playing the material live.

  • Stanley is KING

  • Stanley's a friggin' beast.

  • Thank you for posting this! They are playing SOng For John, which is probably my all-time favorite song. Thx again!

  • Brilliance, sure brilliance.
