WOW! all I could say is WOW! I'm awestruck! Keeping up with Al Dimiola on the Double Bass? OMG! His intonation is just ..... SPECTACULAR! and at such high speeds too! AND his lines are pertinent and make melodic and harmonic sense!
Yeah...it is a lifelong affliction, I come from a town whose name begins Cananda (Canandaigua) and every once in awhile, like my fellow dyslexics everywhere, I slip but still cannot see.
The guitarist is Al Di Meola... guitar virtuoso and bandmate of Stanley in Return to Forever. Check out his solo stuff (especially the album Casino), and the RTF stuff.
The violinist is Jean Luc Ponty. If i remember correctly, he played in the Mahavishnu Orchestra, who are another amazing fusion band.
Stanley really shines in this clip, but look up the other guys, because they are all amazing, virtuoso musicians.
Never seen such flow going on on an upright, truly amazing. Listen to "light as a feather" (Chick Corea), Clarke smokes on this record...groove monster.
Just saw Stanley Clarke & Lenny White w/ Patrice Rushen @ the Blue Note on Saturday 3/24. Got to meet them after the show & get autographs. He also mentioned that he wouldn't rule out RTF getting back together eventually.
Yeah twas a pretty special night. Granada Theatre on Greenville Ave in Dallas. I was playing in a band at the time and went to see Stanley on a rare night off. Near the end of the show he asked a few local bass players to come up. Oh hell yeah!! I trampled people getting there!! He seemed to like my playing and although I was a jazz/rock bassist, he could tell I'd been listening to him!! It was awesome just shaking his hand:0
Glad there still playing this kind of stuff. Seems there was a time that musicians weren't supposed to play too fast or else they'd get accused of being hotdogs. But if the stuff they are playing is musical, then let the dog off the leash, I say.
You hit it on the head: if it is MUSICAL then it is good. I've played with some major changerunners that can fly on the neck but there isn't a melodic bone in their bodies. Sometimes a minimal approach is required, sometimes it is balls out. The key is to listen and make music.

clarke's best bass playing, to me, has to be on "Sometime Ago", from Return to Forever.

How good does it get? Not only did you get to jam with God's own representative on earth but he like your playing as well.
I bet there was a real stampede to get up there as well.

He's got incredible stability with his right hand for
playing so fast. He's utilizing some techniques found
more common in Flamenco guitar.I'm reminded of him at
A Newport show using chords with another Flamenco type
of strum.I'm sure he's aware of Jimmy Garrison's Bass
intro to Coltranes 'All My Favorite Things' off 'Live
at the Village Vangaurd Again' back in 66.Incredible!
