Not because they taught me how to tackle or throw a curve ball but b/c they gave a damn about where us kids were headed in life. and them showing interest in us made our teams want to succeed in life because we did not want to let down our coaches who believed in us. im not from a privelaged neighborhood like mark is, so this meant a lot to us at the time b/c we didnt get the same support at home

I agree with the fact that there are more important things than football in life. However, I do enjoy football from time to time. The Superbowl doesn't really bother me, but the fact that our society embraces instant fame and wealth frustrates me. I like football, but still think it should be treated with less importance in our society. At the same time, the government doesn't want us to read a book, like you said, because it would create informed people which would be less easily manipulated.

Read a lot of books, watched a lot of documentaries, hell I could even tell you why Prius' are worse than the environment than most any other car (despite public opinion). I agree with the fact that there are more important things than football in life. However, I do enjoy football from time to time. The Superbowl doesn't really bother me, but the fact that our society embraces instant fame and wealth frustrates me. I like football, but still think it should be treated with less importance in our society. At the same time, the government doesn't want us to read a book, like you said, because it would create informed people which would be less easily manipulated.

People don't care about reality, because the reality is boring, that's why people want to keep their minds entertained, and they do it in various ways, through sports, tv shows, drugs, alcohol, and the shit they can take, because they do not have a real reason to live, because the only way to live is through Jesus Christ, that's what is missing in the people's hearts

i agree with most of this, but mark acts like its impossible to enjoy football and maintain political awareness at the same time. with that said though, i understand the message... people study sports the way that they should study and understand politics. at the end of the day, professional sports mean nothing, and politics mean everything.

I couldn't have said it better. The obsession with sports has gotten completely out of control in this country. You're made to feel like weirdo if you aren't some zombie who must sit infront of the tube every weekend wasting his/her life away watching some hyped-up sporting event. It's become cool to know all about the players. Personally, I couldn't care less about these people. Sporting events can be fun in moderation, but we need to focus much more on important matters in this world.

I find it interesting that he demotes any positive aspects of sports yet quotes from a philosopher who was so deep in thought he refused to feed his own daughter until she died of starvation.
Maybe he should be reading books and not just repeating the first 5 lines he has read from the paper that day. I'm not saying sports are always a good thing, i just think his narcissism hinders whatever minimalistic point he is trying to make.
