Routers can be connected with various speeds of Ethernet or Serial connections. Ethernet (including FastEthernet is normally used for Local Area Networks (LANs) and serial interfaces are normally used for longer connections (Wide Area Network or WAN) including those which may use a 3rd party service provider for the WAN link.
