Awesome video, I really think you needed clips of the stadium and the hospital and the PRT also though. And a clip of students crossing the road between classes in front of the lair. =) Made me remember why I love this town though. Very good song choice.
So I grew up i Morgantown but now live overseas and i was feeling home sick. Thanks fo the vid, now I get to feel like I am back home when ever I want. :D
Beautifully done. Only suggestion I can make is timing some of the more zoomed out and scenic vistas of Morganton with the increasing tempo of the music. The corner street view in sunnyside didn't do justice to the most intense part of the musical score. Just my opinion.
I have to say, I am absolutely speechless. Seeing this is the Morgantown I am proud of. Not when where burning a couch but looking being proud of our country-side as well as urban civilization. Good Job Chad.
Excellent work! I've been wanting to show my friends here in Japan how beautiful my hometown can be and was getting tired of showing them couch burning vids.
Love the video but I can't believe nobody else realized there no Milan Puskar Stadium in this? That woulda made it perfect!!! Don't forget it next time! Lol
You need some Evansdale shots :) And shots of the stadium fans and/or a game. Although, all in all it was pretty awesome! I especially liked the Woodburn one with the clock.
Great video. Would have been cool to see exterior shots of the Coliseum, Puskar stadium, Ruby hospital, and Mylan pharmaceutical. But its still pretty cool. Well done.
I'd heard about this video and finally found your website in our local paper! Wonderful. Agree with a couple of suggestions....1. A winter one would be beautiful. 2. More of the sports arenas filling up and maybe even fast-forward clips of scenes from some games...if WVU will let you. 3. The shot that was behind ESPN game day showing fraternity row and Women's Hall would be good. 4. Even MORE nights shots...those are the best. I think my 4 years at WVU went that fast, also. Good job.
Thank you for your time and energy in producing this awesome video of my hometown! An amazing way to showcase our Morgantown! Hope to see more of your work -- soon!
Was checking out your website... Are any of your photographs employing HDRI or is that all one shot in camera settings? Also, anyway you could release the specs on your motion control dolly you built? Is it capable of repeating motions precisely ?
@heckman13 Yes, There are a few on there that were created using HDRi. I have a video on my youtube channel called "Motion Control Time Lapse Dolly - first run". At the end of that video I have a description of the rig I built. Go take a look. I'm not sure that it would repeat exactly. It's pretty primative as far as a motion control rig would go. Thanks.
dude this rocks, i went to school at wvu and currently live here in morgantown! thank you for this its one thing to see the same buildings everyday and every night. but when you see it this way it really just makes me love this place so much more thanks man great job LETS GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!
I love this. Especially as an avid traveler, for most people Morgantown is just a blip on the map but it's more than home to me. I'm so glad I have a brilliant video to share with my international friends! Mountaineer for life.
How did you achieve the camera motion in each scene ? A jib or dolly of some sort ? Also did you use some interval timer on the camera to snap each photo ?
@heckman13 I used a variable speed motion control dolly that I built to obtain the slow pans and raises. I use a Nikon D5000 which has a built in interval timer setting. Basically I set up my equipment and let it run for an hour or so while I talk to whoever would come up and ask me what in the world I was doing and what the equipment was. haha.
@griffdawg08 I checked out the dolly video--have you thought about using a microcontroller to move the dolly and trigger the camera instead of using the pwm controller and interval timer? One could code up a variable speed/step controller on an arduino in an evening, easy.
@pants6000 Yes. that was what I originally wanted to do. I wold love to use a microcontroller to move the dolly and trigger the camera. But as I was looking into how to do that, I realized that I had no idea how to do it. All that I was reading might as well have been french to me. That's how little I knew what it was talking about. So I finally came across the idea to use the PWM. It's not ideal but it's the best I could come up with. Would still love to use a microcontroller though.
@griffdawg08 It's really not too hard; the arduino especially is really easy to get started with. Actually I'm looking for some interesting projects, especially photography related--I'd build you a controller if you want; we'd just have to work out the details of talking to your dolly and camera, neither of which should be too hard...
@pants6000 shoot me an email at chadgriffithphotography@gmail.com . how much would you charge to make something like that/teach me how to do something like that? Thanks.
I am just a freshman at WVU and I love it! Everyone that stereotypes us needs to watch this. And there were several people in my History class today that were talking about this. Awesome job!
@Rogerhayhurstfsu I use Corel Video Studio Pro X3 for my video editing. There's better stuff out there but for my price range it gets the job done. The time lapse is made using hundreds of photos taken incrementally, not with a typical video camera and then sped up.
Great video :D Is this made from a video or a series of time lapse photos? If it's from photos, how often do you set your camera to take pictures and also how many FPS do you set your video to play them at? Thanks in advance :D
@RoboTekno Yes these were all made using hundreds of individual JPG photos. Depending on lighting, speed of things, etc. the interval for the pictures ranged from a picture every 2 seconds to a picture every 25 seconds. They were put together at the standard 29fps. Thanks for your interest.
This is great. It makes me homesick. After being gone for over 20 years I recognized so much. I agree submit it to WV tourism board. It would be a great promotional tool for them. Job well done!
This video is amazing. It's good to see something positive about Morgantown, something not about all the partying and other stuff that goes on. Made props...Nikon for life!
This is so, so awesome. I'm a WVU grad living on the West Coast and this video just made me miss West Virginia and Morgantown so bad...but also made me proud of where I came from. Well done!
Very awesome. I was surprised to not see a shot of the football stadium filling up during a night game and some of the game being played. I know you had to work but the LSU game would've been perfect for that, esp. with all those towels waving. Either way excellent job.
@RoushStang Yeah, I would love to do a TL of mountaineer field but they won't let me bring my tripod in. Maybe after they see this video they'll let me try it out. Who knows....lol.
Brought back some old memories. Thanks for taking the time. The quality is amazing. Wondering how did the ultra slow zoomin. Did you do it in the editing?
That was awesome. I met you while you were shooting from the Ogelby roof parking lot and had no idea what it would turn out like. This is a great collection. Good job on it!
@griffdawg08 I was thinking about getting a d5000 dslr for christmas, how is it? I took photo in high school but stopped and want to get back into it. Does it offer room to grow?
@aochs615 Don't buy into the "room to grow" theory. You just need to pick Nikon or Canon and stick with it as lenses end up costing a LOT more than the body and are far more important. Once you know what you are doing there isn't a significant difference between the $500 and $2500 bodies in normal usage as far as image quality is concerned. You mainly pay for extra features or better low light usage. You will never outgrow a camera... you may just require a specific feature it can't provide.
@aochs615 Also... look into the Adobe programs. They are really good to know how to use and I highly suggest you pay for them especially if you get the academic discount. Lightroom and the basic Creative Suite are relatively affordable and are really all you need for basic photography. The Magic Bullet Suite is amazing as well but it is a little on the expensive side. It's great for video work, though.
@HippieMagic Yea I'll look into them, i can't get an academic discount since i graduated though lol, I have a few lenses from my old Nikon, so ill probably end up going for Nikon. Thanks
WOW, all I can say is WOW. One of the best movies I have watched in a long time. One of the best looking sets of video beautifully blended to create a work of art.
@Innortal I'm not sure what house it was. It was at the top of North High Street. I was on the back porch of an old abandoned frat house. I wanted to try to get on the roof, but couldn't do it.
I like the one at the top of High Street looking over the Mountain Lair Plaza as the sun sets. It would have been pretty cool if you could have gotten one of them setting up for and filming ESPN College Game Day!
what kind of camera did you use ? GoPro ?

Well done, were you near the old Kappa Sigma house for those overshots of downtown and the back of the Mountainlair?
Feels professional. I say, submit it to the tourism board. It feels very professional, and almost like an ad for the city. Job well done.

@ncgreenewv Yeah, that would have been cool, but my regular day job kept me away. haha.
