Funny, i was about to comment how much Jellyfishs song Bye Bye Bye is indebited to this song but all i hear is Hugo Montenegros 'theme from the Fox' . Good song.
I do remember this song - and I remember the Group as well - oh yes this was "back in the days" when Musicians played actual instruments, and you had to actually sing and play. It wasn't strictly "electronic" music and screaming disgusting lyrics - this was good clean "pop" music and frankly I miss it.
To myefjeans, You got that right . Unless they use the same lyrics and instruments and sung by someone that can come close, it will never be matched. Fact! They may as well take a seat and listen. 60's- 70's music is here to stay. We were so honored with the music and beat by all this groups,
One of my old school mates father passed away last week. We used to play this all day long in their house when we were growing up. RIP Don. Thanks for the posting.
I was playing through this melody recently and had been asking people what it was and no one could tell me. I tried some various titles tonight but had no success (I knew almost none of the lyrics). Just for fun I found a recording of "Tracy" by the Cufflinks. This was on the side and I clicked on it with no idea of what it was, it just looked sort of fimiliar. Talk about devine providence! What a cool little bonus to end the day! Thank you Lord and thank you 45rpm Singles!
Respond to this video..What a great song! How I long for the days when this song was a hit, and all the other fabulous music from that time. Today's music, especially rap, is pure cRAP.
@primogennaio you gotta laud the efforts of producers diggin' their moms' vinyl crates to recycle near-forgotten gems to turn into sick beats. If it weren't for Kanye, would 21st century kids get to discover the virtuosity that is Laura Nyro and King Crimson?
@iwasanangryyoungman Not just Kanye. Occasionally the old tunes get a push in the movies or tv. Much of the music from that time was popular due to cultural and political reasons which are no longer contemporary. The rest of the blame is record companies which produce music for glitzy costumes and special effect, and no regard for quality.
Was this covered by a female singer around the same time it came out, early 70's? I seem to remember listening to a different version when I was a kid, and I'd swear it was a woman singing. But then maybe that's just the vagaries of memory.
@Nickie0016 yes the kids of the sixties were very priveleged kids. they had access to natural food more than now. they had access to brand new technology at relatively cheaper prices. they did not have the same anxiety of influence. they did not have the anxiety of knowing that everything they do i.e. owning cars, taking birth control, etc. can have such negative implications. they did not live in such a media saturated time. they lived near the height of uncontested american hegemony...
stofpoeper, I will give that one a listen. Any station that plays stuff such as this is in my good books. Those were the days when no-talent carnival freaks such as lady gag were not around. This one is actually better their other great song, "Hitchin' A Ride". Who needs drugs when one can get high on memories from a gentler, carefree time?
@musicollector1975 there is one lady gaga video worth watching the one with pictures of george nader vanity fair did i live for the sun by the sunrays on their album
Thank for posting this, really brings back memories of my youth. Use to play this on my mate's record player when his Dad was out as we were not supposed to use it.
I was delivering newspapers at 4:45 am when this was on the radio and I found it later in the dollar bin- good song that reminds me of those times- in the summer I'd see the sun rising.
WOW! I just found this song by accident. I never knew who did this. Fantastic...Although I always thought a female sang this. Now I can groove whenever I want !!! Yea baby!
@jadegreenkaty - Why don't you go and see them in the Solid Silver Sixties tour from Feb - June in a town near you!!! Look on Vanity Fare's Facebook page or Flying Music for details!
Great Song. You mean to tell me this was cover song? I'd thought vanity fair had it first I remember hearing on the radio every morning when I was getting ready for school. Having my bowl of Wheaties, getting my books, Mom driving my sister and myself to school.
I have to sayit was the best era for music, at least for my generation, although I was born in '59. While I'll admit to loving "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone" by Glass Tiger, and many of Eric Carmen's and Raspberries songs, the music sure was great when I was a kid.
I was floored hearing this tune, as I'm sure I last heard it when it was on the play list of the local radio station back then. At first I didn't remember it and then the sudden ahhh ya ... now I remember.
@Frazzo The headphones are gone. Overuse. The new ones are all tangled up, so I'll just have to turn the radio up for that aweet sound and wait until my son helps me undo things.
@johnnypoker46 It's just about a guy needing to get back to his lady and not having money or a car to do it with. I understand it fully, but haven't been in that predicament. I grew up with that one, too, though.
When music meant something, I was just a kid, but some of the music from the 80's was pretty good, too.
I get sad when I hear some of my teeenager's music.
Wow! This brings back memories. I remember my parents buying me my first record player for Christmas 1969. I was seven and this was the only 45 they had bought for me. I wore it out. Thanks for this posting.
I still love this song! My daughter is 17 today and she wouldn't understand it! HAHAHAHAaa! What they don't know. Some day, I'll get speakers and play it onto the street whenever she walks by...
It's funny how a kid's mind works sometimes---I was seven when I first heard this, and because of what I'm assuming is a harpsichord's use in the song,I somehow equated this with Lurch of the Addams Family.

This is just a great song! There are some other songs by the same title, but this is the one I was looking for. I agree with the other comments that this original recording is the best, and soooo easy to sing along, too. THANKS for posting it for us all to enjoy. It is a song that you will never forget.
@prettymom777 Hi There... I was between 0 to 10 hahahaha How I wish I'd been older back then, still, atleast some of theese groups are still going, maybe not All with original artists but still Great..Have a great day Prettymom...regaurds..Julie.xx
@prettymom777 The best music, indeed. The years from about 1961 to 1973 was an extraordinary period of creativity for so many diverse music types: pop, rock, jazz, soul, R&B, blues, folk and even folk-rock fusion. Incredible.
@prettymom777 Agree! Sadly I wasn't even born yet back then. But my parents are the same age as you, so I heard those songs after they bought some tapes (yes, remeber those?) with 'old' music. Love at first sight! Like most of the stuff back in the day, this song too was translated to estonian. So I never knew the title of the original. Finding this now made my day!
@prettymom777 If it was the 60's then you are spot on. Poor kids today have something called rap and dance music. Now repetitive rubbish would be a better name. Thank heavens my time was earlier!
@musicollector1975 There are many internet radio stations doing exactly just this. My fav streaming station is Offshore music, playing the music as it was from the pirate ships from those years.
Great song! I just turned 16 and got my driver's license here in southern California.
On the rare occasion when my parents allowed me to drive the family car to my part time job at Jack in the Box, I would crank up the tunes on the AM radio and this song was frequently playing. Of course, I always took the longest route to work just to extend the driving fun.
@lioshenka Beam me back, too! There was a wonderful time capsule of a few years where ALL the lyrics could be heard. And arrangements were lyrical and innovative.
AWESOME!!!!! My bus driver played this on tape when I took the bus to Nursey School in 1970!!!! hahahaha! I remember this melody almost 40 years later! I loved it than, and I love it now!!!
\my Dad was in the original Vanity Fare, I got all the songs, and Man Child is one of my faves!!! Trevor had such a fantastic range. My Dad was the Bass player Tony.
there ya go, nice to see their music is being enjoyed still. those were the days ay?
Around the 1969/1970 period we had groups around from England like Vanity Fair, The Cuff Links, Edison Lighthouse, Whiteplains, Picketywitch (with two female singers added), from what Ive read they were basically studio bands many with same members and I found a lot of this bubble gum type music very enjoyable to listen to.
If Ron Dante was the heart of The Cuff Links, then Tony Burrows was the heart and soul of Edison Lighthouse, White Plains, and Brotherhood of Man. In fact, at one point he had like 5 hit songs in one month with three bands!
Great song with a grooving harpsichord and a lilting melody to back it up!
A bouncy, lively song, typical 1960s. Unfortunately it gets little airplay these days. It ought to be played early in the morning, afternoon, evening...
I don't know why we don't hear this great one on the radio more. Some years ago I remember one jockey mistakenly saying that "Hitchin' A Ride" was their only hit, and many still don't know that was not so. Thanks for posting.
Covered in French by Claude François (the one who sung "My Way" the first). I like Vanity Fare better. I knew this song when it peaked at #8 in the TOTP.
And some people thought Vanity Fare was a One Hit Wonder..(Hithin a Ride)...

@musicollector1975 There are many internet radio stations doing exactly just this. My fav streaming station is Offshore music, playing the music as it was from the pirate ships from those years.

Awesome song! I remember roller-skating to this at our local rink. The tempo kind of reminds me of a Jewish folksong--but that is not a bad thing!!!

Thank you for posting this song. I thought I'd never hear it again. Lovely harmonies.

And arrangements were lyrical and innovative.

...another gem by this group is " Man Child" the flipside of "Hitchin", which is never ever played. Shame.

\my Dad was in the original Vanity Fare, I got all the songs, and Man Child is one of my faves!!! Trevor had such a fantastic range. My Dad was the Bass player Tony.

The Cuff Links were the voice of Ron Dante, who was also The Archies and not Andy Kim as always rumored.

Correction - The Cuff Links were American of course and Polly Browne was the the one female lead singer of Picketywitch

Around the 1969/1970 period we had groups around from England like Vanity Fair, The Cuff Links, Edison Lighthouse, Whiteplains, Picketywitch (with two female singers added), from what Ive read they were basically studio bands many with same members and I found a lot of this bubble gum type music very enjoyable to listen to.
keith490783 2 years ago
Both White Plains and Edison Lighthouse featured lead vocals by Tony Burrows, who was also part of The Pipkins and The First Class.

It was the golden age of pop.

I prefer this one actually, though I don't mind "Hitchin' A Ride". I heard this on the radio the other day for the first time in ages.

My favorite song from Vanity Fare; I wore the 45 out! WONDERFUL! 10+ stars.

Covered in French by Claude François (the one who sung "My Way" the first). I like Vanity Fare better. I knew this song when it peaked at #8 in the TOTP.
