"what's it like at 9:xx in the morning in 1934" - drop the audience into that time, as if it were 10:xx this morning - I think most people when watching Public Enemies missed this, for whatever reason. That's why he chose to use digital video - to avoid the "period" look of a typical Hollywood film. It worked for me!

@jackbyrnes86 You know he's returning to TV? HBO greenlit a show he's producing called Luck. It's about horseracing and has already signed on Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. He's directing the pilot!
