its as if the song is addressing his mother when it goes "...your head is humming and it wont go in case you dont know, piper's calling you to join him..." and "..dear lady can you hear the wind blow and did you know your stairway lies on the whispering wind"

its evident from how his brother looks at her while this part is playing.

It's said that this was not included in the movie because of licensing rights for the song but thank God it wasn't because it would have been a movie stopping 9 min snore fest. This obviously does not work and gives nothing to the movie.

@mdb86lfc Since I've been a rock singer for 25 years I think I know a hell of a lot more than you do about rock, I saw Zep do this live by the way. I was not referring to the song but to the choice of playing an album cut in the middle of a movie, the director made the right choice in cutting it.
