whats happening is the vinagar gives up some electrons to the salt which breaks apart into NA and CL these atoms then become electrified or energized. The CL atoms now electrified work with copper atoms breaking apart of the tarnish atoms thus you get clean pennies.
Pennies are coated with copper oxide when they are made.The copper oxide makes the pennies look dirty,but they are really not.When the pennies are placed in the acid copper oxide gets dissolved in the acids making the pennies clean.
Instead of doing that you could have done it the long way which is getting hot sause like tapatio and put a penny there for an hour and BOOM!!1 clean oh and thanks for the invite
we did this at school but we did sometime like plating the pennies with zine and heated them and they changed back to the way they would look if they were new. thanks for the friend invite also
I think you mean zinc. :) You can also plate quarters & brass the same way you plated the pennies. I was going to do that, but zinc isnt as common in peoples houses so I stuck with vinegar & salt.
@zeblueor2213 what do you mean???

owen402005 2 years ago
Thats pretty nifty that you buy the same mustard. :)
Yeah no bank would take those pennies so I said I'll put them to use in a science file :)

fantastic editing chris
like how you blew away the salt!
so the vinegar dissociates NA+ and CL- and the NA+ combine with the oxide OH- so then the copper is free!
im wrong i think....

Yeah I really liked the one too =^D
