It is not Spanish. It is Ladino. It was derived from old Spanish but influenced strongly by Hebrew Aramaic, but also Arabic, Turkish. It is sort of like a Spanish version of Yiddish. Yiddish was formed when Ashkenazi Jews were expelled from their German speaking lands and could speak this common language in their newly adopted countries. Ladino was formed like Yiddish was - when years ago, Sephardic Jews were expelled from Spain and settled around the world.
This is not in fact an "ancient" song... it was written by Flory Jagoda, a National Heritage Fellow, and a national treasure. At 84 she lives in Virginia and is still performing.
What a nice version of this ancient song they really swing!! - Que bonita version, suena bastante bien, sobre todo que no se sale de la forma y la adaptan bien.
lol, i didn't realise one could have a "gringo" accent in espanyol. (although i really shouldn't be talking as i bring the cuban accent into it) sigh, i <3 kenny ellis cd. best holiday cd ever.
Ladino sounds a lot like Spanish. It is the closest language in the world that resembles spanish or castillian. Ladino is actually closer to the original 15th and 16th century spanish than the one spoken by modern spanish speakers. I am latino, from el salvador. I am not biased. GREAT SONG! And Sephardi Jew is not necessarily from Spain, but a descendant of a jew from the Iberian Peninsula.
You're attitude explains why people like my mother were forced to go to school to learn "proper" spanish when they already spoke properly to begin with! You claim every word spoken as your own and nothing for anyone else. I recognize the ladino influence in there, delightful tune, thank you :)
candelikas = little candles in LADINO, the language of Sephardic Jews tracing back to 15 century Spain. Ladino is mostly 15th century Castillian Spanish - but is not considered "Spanish" by contemporary standards. (It would be like saying something in Shakesperian English and calling it contemporary English.) Hope all had a lovely Chanukah!
true but unlike pop belif, there is few Hebrew influences. Its influenced alot more by Arabic. It is a Latigbase uses ha-aleph-beis, has vowels in its writing.like the Jews in eastern Europe speaking Yiddish. They used these languages for secular everyday houshold converstaions, b/c they belived Hebrew is a ha-loshn kodesh (grammers off) or a holy language. Altho the only communities i am aware of that have djudeo-espanyolo pop. are several scattered parts of southamerica spain, and Israel.
Estoy orgulloso de ser sefardí. Mi familia habla ladino. Es muy fácil a entender sí hablas español. Es más cómo español qué hebreo.
la palabra por españoles en hebreo es «sefardí». Interesante, ¿no?

You might miss a word or two but again, if you speak or understand Spanish, Ladino comes very easily. It is considered a Judeo-Spanish language.

Anyone who understands Spanish can understand Ladino. It is much more influenced by Spanish than Hebrew.
