this works just like a under ground filter (trap) your pipe should be just under the top of the water line so the water will cicr best in the diy filter also never use matel, when it rusts... and it will, it will kill your fish, and just having the pipe in your tank will kill Invertebrates.. so no snails no shirmp no crabs no clams...etc..

Pretty sure what's going on here is air is going into the bottom chamber, then just bubbling straight back out the top tube, at the point of least resistance. So... it's a good thing that bettas don't require heavy filtering.

That thing is filtering zero water. For it to filter, it has to have the bubbles come up through the media. There also has to be inlet holes for water to flow through, so that it can actually flow through the media, rather than just sitting there.

Very cool. I would be tempted to silicone the plastic tubing to the top of the 1" metal tube to totally seal it, instead of the sponge piece you used.  Would a better silicone seal help with the pump/vacuum effect?

I did this with a two litre bottle. All i used is gravel from my old tank for the bio filter, a screwdriver to heat the holes up and a stanley knife. Very effective thank you!

just fyi, the yellow and green sponge is not suitable for use in a fish tank because kitchen sponges are soaked with antibacterial fluid before they are packaged (hence the reason sponges are slightly damp when purchased)... if you are going to use such a sponge, it would be wise to rinse it out thoroughly before use.

I think it'd work more efficiently if you took the sponge out the top.

Basically it'd allow the water to flow through the center tube faster, creating more of a vacuum. Maybe gently melt the tube to the bottom of the bottle with your soldering gun?

I HAVE SEEN MANY DIY FILTERS HERE AND YOUR'S IS ONE OF THE BEST. THE ONLY THING I CHANGED FROM YOURS IS ADD ANOTHER TOP END WITH HOLES TO THE TOP, JUST IN CASE IT WOULD GET TIPPED. WE HAVE IT SET UP IN A FRY TANK WITH NO BOTTOME MEDIA.

put another bottle top on the top part of the filter and it will force all the water and air through the gravle and stuff oh for got put a whole half way down tube and pull air line above the whole and all the water goes through the whole and is force down the pipe through gravle i made mine this way looks better and makes its a lot cleaner

Dude i made one of these today! but i used a large clear rubber tubing. I put a very powerful air pump and air stone half way down the tube and it pump water like a pump lol. Its crazy and the fish tank water is so clear its like there is no water in it at all its every clear than when i first filled it with "fresh water". any one want to know if this works ill be making a video of my tank in the next days. Thanks alot for this video it changed my fish's life! lol

Instead of using a sponge to hold the tubing in place, how about a rubber stopper with a hole through it for the tubing? This would force nearly all the air through the filter system, instead of back up the pipe. What do you think?
