Unfortunate as the death of Robert Dzieckanski is, it seems that the police, for the most part, followed protocol... that said, the force used was excessive. Although Dzieckanski was severely agitated, he had no weapon that would pose a serious threat to the officers or to himself and it is because of that I believe there was no reason for the taser to be used.

Current use of force continuems are placing the taser at the same level as pepper spray, meaning it is used to meet or exceed the force coming from the bad guy.That level of force is rather low and ranges from verbal non-compliance, to threats of open or closed hand violence.A Bad guy comes at you screaming "fuck you" with a raised fist is a perfect of example of a good taser deployment. Resisting aka non compliant subjects is what the taser is meant for.

The taser should be used in exactly those circumstances where harmful encounters with (ex. knives, gun, bats, etc.) occur. This is because it is the best/safest way to subdue the individual without the officer having in shooting him/her to gain control of the situation.

There was four young, perfectly able bodied, police officers who would have had no problem using "old school" policing to subdue Dzieckanski with simple manpower. I believe if there is a problem it is not with the individual police officer or the taser itself, but that problem lies in policing and the way in which the taser is being used.

Instead of using the taser as a less leathal alternative opposed to firearms, police instead seem to use the taser as an alternative force for any conflict. Although there should be more testing on the effects of the taser I do not think it is appropriate to blame this device for any deaths occurring during or after its use. Although deaths do happen it is important to realize many involved in conflicts with police involving taser do not receive any serious injury.

I suppose what im trying to say is that proper use of the taser in situations where the lives of the officer, the innocent and the suspect are in danger is not only important but necessary. But when the use of the taser can be avoided it would be a good idea to use some "old school" methods. In this case I believe a life would have been saved.

You can't keep engaging a taser while restraining a suspect. The officers would have felt the affects too. Better to take a suspect down with a taser then run the risk of injuring all parties. Medication and/or alcohol can reduce the affects of a taser. The airport administration is at fault, not the police.
