A lovely version of this pas de deux. Interesting choreography variations that I have never seen before. Also in the coda (in another video here). Very clean dancing.
Maybe of all Miyako's partners in this pas de deux, McRae is the best (over Mukhamedov, Cope, Bonelli et al). Because of his youth, he communicates a sense of half-unbelieving ecstasy in getting to accompany this glittering elfin legend of a ballerina. He radiates 'this must be too good to be true - it can't be true - oh good heavens it IS TRUE!' with the audience.
So, I fell in love with this performance, I admit, when I was little and watched Barbie and the Nutcracker. I made my mom take me to the ballet, but now I'm curious as to why I was so amazed. 'Cause that shit ain't got NOTHIN' on this!
@balletjones I think she is extremely graceful, choosing your favourite dancer is so subjective.
People like Nunez,i have seen her make errors or stumbles in every performance i have seen and yet she has a very expressive face.Miyako has left Covent Garden now.
@balletjones I don;t think that they ever have,Robert Helpmann was Australian and they have had various Russians,i think South Africans,i am sure that there are others.
@fruitofkindness That's because it's a descending g major scale. Any scale when played descending, with the rhythym "1 2 a 3 and | 1 and 2" spells "Joy to the World." It's actually a great way to teach children their scales! [:
a pair was introduced to the floor without nuts to perform in thanks for the crushing and the cleaning of all the nuts by royalty for something they where unable to do and in unity they gave thanks
This one might be my favorite, better than the Sugar Plum Fairy in my opinion. She is very graceful and talented. Makes me feel like I did a great disservice to myself for not trying out for ballet when I was younger.
@MozartGirl1756 No!! you are not alone!! Plus, her movements lack of plasticity, and are too net in some moments, the Japanese culture is obvious, and her legs movements made me think of samurai's swards --[lost Russian fairy-tale's magic...]
@MozartGirl1756 No you are not alone MozartGirl. I totally feel the same...I didn't get that feeling I always get while watching these two dance. She was too "smiley" which made it seem like she was just going through the motions but not loving the moment...Anyway, I just wasn't wowed by this interpretation...
@Amadrieclya Yeah what you said :) I agree 100%. Just like MozartGirl said, this beautiful dance should remain between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince...didn't like this interpretation at all.
@SeanaluvsBurleigh They have their own magical PDD in the first act, obviously you have your opinion, yet this production, in its various incarnations, continues to sell out every time.
@grendelwok Thanks for the info,I was curious because I have the 2001 performance on dvd with Yoshida,so she was a long time principal for Royal Ballet?
@oneill9875 The 2001 DVD is the 2000 performance with Yoshida and Jonathan Cope. I have both DVDs, but I think Yoshida and McRae just seem to "mesh" better.
Miyako Yoshida became a principal dancer in '88 while still with the Birmingham Royal Ballet. So she was a principal dancer when she transferred in '95.
She retired from the Royal Ballet in 2010, a few months after this performance.
@josephinea1 thats true, but i went to the nutcracker just the other night and id be starin at them boys!!!! they got nice legs in such, they had my attention.
Absolutely stunning!!! I watched it with my children the other night and while I love the Nutcracker and have seen many wonderful performances, we were all in awe of this one. Even my children had me rewinding the last minute or two of this dance because they wanted to watch over and over.
@joltzkrieg I'm trying to find it too. All I have is written in Russian. If you find it, could you please message me or reply to this comment. Thank you. :D
@joltzkrieg This is the Nutcracker ballet, Tchaikovsky Op 71. The movement is the Act II grand pas de deux (dance for two) adagio.
Tchaikovsky didn't include this in the Suite (Op 71a), probably because he saw it as a "gimmick". A friend challenged him to write a movement based only on a simple scale. Pyotr Ilyich asked, "ascending or descending?". The result is this GPDD Adagio, based off a simple descending scale. "Simply" beautiful. ;)
@sophmeister303 Well now I don't feel so silly. I cry almost the entire program. I have it on CD and play it during every Christmas season. This music just moves some people to tears, and here I thought I was the only one. lol.
They both look so friendly. And they're incredible good dancers! I mean I'm not at all an expert when it comes to dancing but this looks just so so lovely. If sth like perfection exists than it will be this dancing. Well done! :)
ohhh wow. im just. speechless. that was absolute perfection. no mistakes AT ALL, not even any little wobbles or anything. their chemistry is superb. and performance quality was exquisite.
Does this come before or after the Sugar Plum Fairy variation?
