Ok Michael Manring haters, Manring is a Berklee alumni, he knows his stuff. This is his take on music. He is doing what a good musician does, his own thing
See, the annoying thing about it to me is that he doesn't really play like a bass. He's more or less just messing around with tones and stuff. I wanted to hear some slapping and popping and some good stuff like that.
@panteralover23 Manring DOES "slap and pop" --he does everything and is a master musician. Perhaps you are unaware of him, hence your narrow-minded comment.
@bonzelite, dude, calm down. I was simply stating that on the Hyper Bass, it's a bit boring and he's not really playing it like a bass. I wasn't upset, I was simply voicing an opinion.
I used to think that I didn't like Michael Manring because I found the whole tuning change thing to be obnoxiously self-indulgent, but this is GREAT! Big big fan.
His ear for what sounds good with the fretless, along with the harmonics, is unbelievable. Unlike a lot of players, he makes incredible use of the equipment, and gets a tone that's out of this world.
i just heard the trio of doom recently i think thats so amazing.... this is just as mind blowing, i need that bass, its nicer than his other one. its hard to get people to like your music though i guess idk.
@fenderman4 actually much more, the ones speced out on the site don't include the ridiculous bridge that this one has, the bridge alone costs more than most basses.
c'mon folks! there is a world of beautiful music out there. try looking at different magazines than old copies of "bass player". just because the man has technique doesn't mean he's communicating anything besides "Look at me I have chops!!! and I'm sensitive listener!!!" Oh well, it's so subjective I know but when it's this painful I have to vent.
It's not so much his technique I'm loving in his playing...it's the different chord progressions and his creativity when it comes to harmony...Adhan is a great example of this...
@bassgenius6 I usually listen to Taylor Swift but I feel I can I identify the beauty in Michael Manring's music(ality), originality, ingenuity and I just can't find the words... just... magnificent...
You can listen to whatever you want, as long as you at least acknowledge the unbelievable amount of talent and heart that he (Manring) has to offer. Hats off to you.
@MrStrangeSensation Yes, and when ou say that, Michael Hedges immediately comes to mind.
I can never stand people not acknowledging such amazing talent (that feeling of knowing you're right but just being unable to prove it with some hard evidence, so to speak)..
@bassgenius6 wow what a snobby comment, it suits your user name. There's no reason to compare, two different things completly. it's like you would say "well if you don't like paintings then you can read your stupid books instead". Pointless. Pointless and arrogant. If I were to compare I find this more interesting but as I stated earlier. Pointless.

And he's not communicating he has chops as much as he is just doing what he does best: being an artist. Granted, there's definitely more beautiful music out there.
what? you've never heard of a threat- less bass? they use it in rap quite a bit because it's boring and lacks integrity. it will not assault your ear's for good or bad.
@6ADAM6BAUM6 hell yea i know what you mean most rap on the radios nowawdays is just "booooooooooom...clap...booom bboom boom...clap.."
and thats it...it pisses me off as a bassist who studies michael manring and jaco like crazy....i mean shit at least back in the 90s rap music had basslines that grooved
The whole thing is one solid, shaped piece of graphite. I played one years ago at a local music store and went home very sorrowful. The model I played was $3,000 and there was no way to fit 4 hipshot detuners on it.
It takes a custom headstock that can fit all 4 detuners to do this, and a cubic assload of talent and practice.
you can actually design your own bass on his sight, and joe zon will make it for you. but, it costs a shitload of money. the bass he's playing is like $5400.
Really, that is a humble bass hero. If you close your eyes and forget the instrument for a second, you don't realize how hard these songs are, but when you see such a performance.. o_0!
I thought it was a hyperbass because it has the super deep three octave cutaway and detuners, but the upper bout is that of a Sonus. I think it was a custom cutaway Sonus Fretless. I was sitting three feet from it and it had me fooled.
Can I ask how did you manage to get Michael Manring to play at your house??? Just curious. And thanks a bunch for posting these videos, the quality is outstanding and in my opinion they are some of the best on YouTube.
no he plays original music too, he's in a band called nucleur rabbit and theres also a great vid of him performing with yves carbonne(9 string fretless bass) just type in "11 string 9 string fretless bass" and search the results
in my opinion his compositions are the best pieces ever made for bass. Petalittia your right. But its impossible a bass player not to have his/her technique influenced by Jaco, since he changed the view of the bass. But it is annoying how ppl stil compare guys like manring with jaco. Jaco was a great in his time, manring is great now. I think manring vision of the bass influences as Jaco vision influenced in his time. But i feel that Jaco is always put first, and manring is underrated
It's just because Jaco was the one who started it all, just like how Michael Hedges was the one who started it all for fingerstyle guitar. It's hard to talk about someone like Manring without mentioning Jaco, who clearly influenced him a particularly large amount.
That was a compliment to Manring! Dubious wording I know but I wrote it in a hurry. I mean Manring is not singular because the frettless sound IS Jaco, and the technique has similar characteristics.
I personally thing the composition "Enormous Room" is better/more beautiful than anything Jaco ever delivered, AND Manring has his head "switchted on" not "doped out" or "deranged".
How in heaven's name were you able to get Michael Manring to play at your house party?! Lucky you! Hell, you're beyond lucky. More like blessed. Next time you have a house party, please invite all of us too.=)
Michael will say that jaco is his hero/god,but michael exceeds jaco by leaps and bounds.A lot of his alternate tunings influences are from Michael hedges.I started working on this piece years ago and now I have excellent visual reference to help me finish what I started. Michael is my Buddha. My Guru.My Tao.
Jaco and Michael don't even bear comparing really. Jaco was amazing, and Michael takes that legacy and jumps out the window with it! His playing is so incredibly beautiful that it brings me to tears. It's like a fresh breeze blowing through on a stifling hot day. Michael, thankyou so much for your incredible music!

jaco is really good and he did a lot for bass, but when it comes to skills Manring eats jaco alive... (I'm getting -10 for this comment and it will be marked as spam)
To me they are very different. Besides, he would have to eat him dead! I like both of them and I love Mick Karn, Percy Jones, Pino Palladino, Mark Egan, Stomu Takeishi, and Zaq. The list could go on but you get the idea.
Manring is the bassis that has one of the most different playing styles than jaco, but still he is the one who can play the most like jaco... you get me?? haha I don't know how to say it
they are both the best at what they do...i saw in one interview that manring actually asked jaco for tips and help and jaco gave them to him and didnt care if he would become better they are both great we all kno that they are both great musicians and they dont compete to see who is better they do what they love and theyre good at it lets leave it at that
@adrian5b jaco pretty much laid the foundation on bass and every one picked up where he left off. he basically created the idea of harmonics on bass. here comes manring raising the bar higher with what's possible on a bass intrument
@adrian5b: I think any honest and objective observer would have to grant this. Manring is in his own league. Neither of us intends this to imply any disrespect toward Jaco, who was a tremendous innovator and popularizer of the bass.
@adrian5b No, I actually agree with you. They are/were both extremely talented musicians, but Michael's music is just Better, in many ways. Easier listening. Jaco had maybe a bit more feel, but less polish. Needless to say, I love them both.

adrian5b 3 years ago 2
they are both the best at what they do...i saw in one interview that manring actually asked jaco for tips and help and jaco gave them to him and didnt care if he would become better they are both great we all kno that they are both great musicians and they dont compete to see who is better they do what they love and theyre good at it lets leave it at that

@adrian5b Manring was one of many Jaco's students

Perfection. Many of Michaels tunes move me to tears. Powerful Stuff, and in my opinion the greatest bassist alive.

I know you said it takes blackmail to make this dude play in your living room... And I imagine it must be some *seriously* potent blackmail...
But if he's ever in Australia he's welcome to play in mine. I'm sure I could gather a crowd lol.
