I just don't think I've ever seen him do anything I found to be particularly interesting. I'll admit, the "homo" bit was pretty much just a kneejerk response to seeing that he dons the make up during interviews as well. It just makes me cringe when artists treat music as though "image" were in any way relevant to musicianship.

Allan Holdsworth didn't study "conventional" music theory, he figured most of the chords and scales out himself and made up his own ways of improvising therefore creating his own kind of theory that only he really knows, check out his instructional dvd where he sets the record straight. Satch and vai and gilbert may have their own licks and phrases but they pretty much learnt off the same theory, I think to be completely individual you should figure it all out by yourself like holdsworth did.

For example- Paul Gilbert is very passionate about his playing, that's why he does it so much. And he expresses himself with his fast music. I may not like it, but it's what he does- no one plays guitar that much without reason.
