Wilson is willfully ignorant, because religion has - patently - served him and his family well. Hitchens, as ever, destroys religion with every breath, yet the faithful don't take on board his arguments - choosing instead to revert to their dusty old, Iron Age book written by illiterate sheep herders in an obscure part of the Middle East.
@mkwheeland87 I feel a lot of people call out "ad hominen" wrongly (not sure which comments your refering to). It is only a fallacy if you intended something other than to insult the person. If you actually intend to insult someones person, and make your intentions clear on this, it is not a fallacy. -"George Bush looks like an idiot" is not an "ad hominen", for example. It is only an "ad hominen" if I say "Bush looks like an idiot! Clearly he didn't know what he was doing!"
Yes. it is true for Person A to say "I think he looks like an idiot" but it is a fallacy to reject his views because of it. The person must reject his conclusions based on logic not character or appearance.
My point was many atheists are just being cruel to Wilson and not listening to his reasons for faith. Belief in God should be rejected because of logical reasons not because of the person representing the reasons for belief. Does that help you see my point?
This is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. I loved Hitchens (apart from his pro-iraq war views) I don't seem to be able to get this in England. I really hope they don't take this off utube!
Immature people don't like to face their fears and many are just too unwilling to go outside their life of privlage. Hitchens exposes their entire diluted way of live and their oppressing of all including themselves.
Sounds like the least educated, most idiotic question ever asked. Only people who believe in god are allowed to leave the house? What the fuck does staying at home have anything to do with your belief in a god?
@satanidomini "This user has closed his account" typical. Being an asshole only gets you so far. And Hitchens debates religion in places where it has a terrible influence. Change is not sparked from your keyboard. It certainly was from his.

Wow, Wilson has a nice house on the water. I guess it pays to peddle ancient fables. Way to live a modest life, Pastor. If you actually lived modestly you could use that money to save starving children. Practice what you preach!
@MrCanadianNomad Maybe you should find out what he does with his money and how much he gets paid. what if he inherited that land from his family, what if he saved up for years and finally purchased that land from a modest income?
@MrCanadianNomad It's not a sin to be wealthy or spend what money you have earned. He does not preach that you cannot be wealthy. By the way, he does a large amount of donations to several middle eastern, african, and asian countries every year. You can look it up. I am not sure the amount he puts in, I didn't look that much into it. But the point is that he is not doing anything wrong just because he is wealthy.
@Singerazboi100 It may not be exactly wrong to be wealthy, but according to the Bible, it is tantamount to wrong. Jesus' famous statement about it being easier for a laden camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to pass into the kingdom of his father is just one example. On the American Indian resrvations they say that if you are too rich you must not love your relatives who are poor. Interpretations vary; in some religions sharing is a duty, in others merely a virtue.
I really enjoyed this documentary. I highly disagree with Hitchens but I really did respect him as a human-- he was very intelligent and snarky, gotta love that. Terrible shame he didn't come to Christ.
You can tell Hitchens liked Wilson better than most of his opponents because he actually believes in what he is defending. Most of the people he debates aren't well versed in their belief and are obvious charletons. This doesn't mean Wilson is right though of course.

(and consequently the reason why Hitler was never excommunicated by the pope...he did nothing wrong, according to the Church.
Christianity itself isn't bad for the world. It's the people trying to bring it into politics or use it to defend their own hateful or wrongful views that is bad for the world.
Announcer: how would you define or describe "truth"?
Hitchens: .... "I don't believe as with objectivity for example it can be declared to be arrived at or found or discovered..."I would very much doubt someone who said they had found what the 'truth" was. I'd be very skeptical of such a claim."
Huh? with the two statements above in mind, how can Hitchens claim that religion poisons everything? Should we doubt what he says? The statements SEEM to contradict each other.
calling atheism or no belief - whatever- a faith presupposes that there may be something out there if it is in fact a chance we're taking on refuting it. Do they think we're in some kind of self imposed purgatory... what faith are we following in refusing god. What exactly are we gambling on?? THERE IS NO ONE OUT THERE!
When ever you guys get a chance, watch Paul the Movie, awesome! Also, I'd rather spend my time and life learning things that are as close to the truth as possible, Fairy tails are for entertainment, not reality...And you people are VERY entertaining LAWLS
@JungleJargon … Christianity has only one redeeming aspect for me: it's NOT ISLAM! That's a big plus … other than that, I'm not impressed. I don't like people who put faith before reason and then want to impose their choice upon the rest of us. Sorry, no cigar, dude!
@macmarine Christian teaching is reason and truth. That is what Christian teaching is.
What the Bible says is all true. The function that hydrogen has inside of us shows us that our Maker is all knowing, all powerful and able to stretch out the fabric of time and space so that most of the most common elements are all working parts inside of us obeying a preexisting word written in and with the functions that the elements were made to have.
@Jamesisshit That must mean you have nothing to say.
What about the ordered functions that most of the most common elements have working inside of us?
What about the 60 million cubic miles of sediments covering all the life forms that lived on earth that no scientist has ever been able to account for?
None of these elephants in the room will ever go away. They won't move.
@SageTheAtheist So what is the herd of elephants doing in the room and why is no one saying anything about them being in the room?
Try explaining the ordered functions that most of the most common elements obey in life forms.
Try accounting for 60 - 125 million cubic miles of sediments. Why are they on land instead of in the oceans and where did the sediments all come from?
It does you no good saying that your Maker is a magic man. It does nothing for evolution or naturalism.
@Jamesisshit actually you have to abandon your reason to believe in the supernatural, rational reasoning includes examining the facts 1st and then coming to a conclusion 2nd,theists start with a conclusion 1st (that a supernatural god-king exists) and then tries to wrench certain facts to fit that conclusion 2nd ,the exact opposite of what a rational, reasonable person would do.
@JungleJargon unless you are gay or a woman or a science and reason supporter. For every good thing that has been done in the namee of Christian faith so to have they been done in the names of other religions and atheisim religion is not the cause then so that argument can't support the belief that therefore christianity is good.
@christinepeace yup,"The history of intellectual progress is written in the lives of infidels(Atheists) ." Its great that these religions underline or highlight our base morality but the rest is dogmatic nonsense.
@DeMars3 don't be fooled. The guy believes snakes talk and Noah really had a boat with all animals. He believes God watches Kids being raped and does nothing. He believes the universe was created for Humans 5,000 years ago. mmmm sounds like a fucken moron to me.
@PDodds77 haha, did you even listen to the debate? I mean actually listen rather than just emote like a simple animal? Do you even know the rules of argumentation or analyzing an argument or do you just go through life opining based on your silly emotions?
Interesting to a point. But the title for their book was "Is Christianity Good for the World?" while all the discussions in this documentary concerned "Does God Exist?" - a different (and much drier) question entirely. Wilson is amiable/Hitchens entertaining but its not enough to make this a must see. I think Hitchens should give-up his God fight and concentrate on Politics. Dawkins loves it more.
@insainbassist I'm pretty sure if you listened to the first 10 minutes of him talk, he expresses Agnosticism, and perhaps Agnostic about "...some Pantheism 'out there'". I'd assume he said 'out there' because he's a Deist, because in Pantheism there is no 'out there'.
@LordShivasServant So has Richard Dawkins, That doesn't mean they're actually deist. They only mean that in the sense that "while we're atheist and believe it's very likely there is no God in any way shape or form we can't possibly be 100% sure about it". Richard Dawkins had a word for it can't recall off the top of my head. Considering they both often refer to themselves as "anti-theist" I'm pretty sure they're not deist.
@insainbassist They're not deists. Deist would imply they believe in a creator, one that is not directly relevant to the Earth the affairs of its inhabitants. They are atheists - they know that there is no sufficient evidence for God, therefore there is no reason to believe in one. People who say they are deists are insanely, insanely incorrect.
I love it when Christians talk about truth or eternal truth. Every time I hear this I want to remind Christians of some of the eternal truths they believe in: It was right and good for Lot to offer his virgin daughters up to be raped to protect two strangers, and for Moses to command the execution of captured Canaanite women and boys but to allow his army to keep the female virgins for themselves. And Joshua's genocide against the Canaanites ... also good. Yes, apparently genocide can be good.
This isn't a collision, this is a smart, intelligent, logical intellectual man vs a religious freaking sick freak! Who from the looks of it likes to poison childrens minds!
@jasonthebarbarian umm whatever, your missing the point, 1 belives in imaginary beings, fairy tales and probley never never land and the other one dosent, so ones an idiot and ones not lol, it aint rocket!
i used to think it was disgusting that muslims call jews apes / pigs but thinking about it - fuck them - its good that someone has a book calling them names too - Jews dont understand their own religion has given them nowhere to live, their own religion sparked off Islam cos it calls others names - now we have 3 killer cults of believing fools
how can they equate the sustainer of gravity with this demonic entity telling them it needs a blood sacrifice
people should ask themselves why these governments finance and allow these cults to continue - its because they keep the masses under control, in fear, unenlightened to their immortal essence by killing intelligence - it maintains their corrupt regal elite system cos it keeps people stupid and like sheeple all headbanging together at the same fucking time
Priests Rabbis and Mullas wear long black robes cos they are evil death cults - war-maintaners
I think Hitchens does anti-theism a disservice by even appearing on the same platform as this tool. They could have done just as well to pick a random gas station worker in Churchtown, Ohio. Christopher, have some standards!
They are debating whether Christianity is good for the world. It should be expounded to is religion good for the world. Given it's track record, the answer should be a resounding "No!"
What I hear Wilson raise are points rational thinkers should consider when we finally attain independence in a post-religious-dominated society. It's the last leg creationists have to stand on. Indeed, a "bowing-out" of sorts as if to say, "Yeah, you beat us. Reason and rational thinking beat us."
Pastor Wilson seems to be nothing more than the usual religious huckster with sophism in every pocket and sufficient horsesh$tt to feed the hungry with a giant front end loader. His alleged god is supposed to be omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent and some kind of wonderful, but somehow the occupiers of the real world find a world in which the reality is such that it seems as if there is no god at all. If reality shows no advantage, then this alleged god is hopelessly pointless and absent.
This is a really great movie and is very even-handed. I lean toward Hitchens' side, but I recommended the film to a friend of mine who is planning on going into ministry. I must say that out of all the people who have debated (read: been intellectually slaughtered by) Hitchens, Pastor Wilson is the one guy I've seen hold his own against him.
I have seen all of this, and I am really baffled by Hitchens' patience with his opponent. Nothing Wilson says throughout the movie makes any sense at all. Nothing. Wilson lies, twists, quote mines, bends, and jabbers his way through the debates. Of course this is to be expected, since it's all theists have, but it did cause some truly toe-curling moments.
And, as people like Dawkins and Hitchens himself would say, who cares if you are offended? Or, to use Stephen Fry's words, "so f*cking what"?
I couldn't care less if you find it offensive. If the religious can't be offended, why should you?
More to the point, it's true that on atheism, virtue does not exist. Atheists can certainly behave in a virtuous way, but it all becomes a delusion, with no ontology or objective reality.

Christianity itself isn't bad for the world. It's the people trying to bring it into politics or use it to defend their own hateful or wrongful views that is bad for the world.
MackanK94 5 months ago
Announcer: how would you define or describe "truth"?
Hitchens: .... "I don't believe as with objectivity for example it can be declared to be arrived at or found or discovered..."I would very much doubt someone who said they had found what the 'truth" was. I'd be very skeptical of such a claim."
Huh? with the two statements above in mind, how can Hitchens claim that religion poisons everything? Should we doubt what he says? The statements SEEM to contradict each other.

Shitty filming. Do they think shaking the camera and constantly cutting to different views is "hip"??? It's freaking annoying and distracting!!!!
gorwell97 5 months ago 15
calling atheism or no belief - whatever- a faith presupposes that there may be something out there if it is in fact a chance we're taking on refuting it. Do they think we're in some kind of self imposed purgatory... what faith are we following in refusing god. What exactly are we gambling on?? THERE IS NO ONE OUT THERE!
I fucking hate that line!

Is the world good?
Christianity is good for all the people in the world. Christian teaching harms no one.
The power of the word of God is able to transform our lives and give us a clear conscience that puts a smile on our faces.
No other world view is able to do that.

@JungleJargon … Christianity has only one redeeming aspect for me: it's NOT ISLAM! That's a big plus … other than that, I'm not impressed. I don't like people who put faith before reason and then want to impose their choice upon the rest of us. Sorry, no cigar, dude!
macmarine 6 months ago

IOW, you lose.

christinepeace 6 months ago
@Jamesisshit actually you have to abandon your reason to believe in the supernatural, rational reasoning includes examining the facts 1st and then coming to a conclusion 2nd,theists start with a conclusion 1st (that a supernatural god-king exists) and then tries to wrench certain facts to fit that conclusion 2nd ,the exact opposite of what a rational, reasonable person would do.
PAULOcbi 6 months ago
@JungleJargon unless you are gay or a woman or a science and reason supporter. For every good thing that has been done in the namee of Christian faith so to have they been done in the names of other religions and atheisim religion is not the cause then so that argument can't support the belief that therefore christianity is good.

@christinepeace yup,"The history of intellectual progress is written in the lives of infidels(Atheists) ." Its great that these religions underline or highlight our base morality but the rest is dogmatic nonsense.

Whoever thought a Christian and a Deist could team up, write a book, and go on tour together!? lol This is seriously milking the Dualism, I love it!
LordShivasServant 7 months ago
@LordShivasServant Deist? I'm fairly certain Hitchens is an atheist.
insainbassist 7 months ago
@insainbassist I'm pretty sure if you listened to the first 10 minutes of him talk, he expresses Agnosticism, and perhaps Agnostic about "...some Pantheism 'out there'". I'd assume he said 'out there' because he's a Deist, because in Pantheism there is no 'out there'.
Not like it really matter what HE believes.
LordShivasServant 7 months ago
@LordShivasServant So has Richard Dawkins, That doesn't mean they're actually deist. They only mean that in the sense that "while we're atheist and believe it's very likely there is no God in any way shape or form we can't possibly be 100% sure about it". Richard Dawkins had a word for it can't recall off the top of my head. Considering they both often refer to themselves as "anti-theist" I'm pretty sure they're not deist.
insainbassist 7 months ago
@insainbassist Yeah, sure.
What a waste of time, eh?
LordShivasServant 7 months ago

And Joshua's genocide against the Canaanites ... also good. Yes, apparently genocide can be good.

how arrogant to call yourself "chosen"
i used to think it was disgusting that muslims call jews apes / pigs but thinking about it - fuck them - its good that someone has a book calling them names too - Jews dont understand their own religion has given them nowhere to live, their own religion sparked off Islam cos it calls others names - now we have 3 killer cults of believing fools
how can they equate the sustainer of gravity with this demonic entity telling them it needs a blood sacrifice
timewilltell7 9 months ago
people should ask themselves why these governments finance and allow these cults to continue - its because they keep the masses under control, in fear, unenlightened to their immortal essence by killing intelligence - it maintains their corrupt regal elite system cos it keeps people stupid and like sheeple all headbanging together at the same fucking time
Priests Rabbis and Mullas wear long black robes cos they are evil death cults - war-maintaners

"Western atheism sees virtue as word with no cash value. "
On the contrary: atheists see facing reality as the biggest virtue of all.
MomoTheBellyDancer 1 year ago
@spokendeity
"As an atheist I find this offensive."

People of reason, please, do not debate or argue with people of the cloth, all you do is elevate their status.
No christian believer will remember that the pastor presented no facts but they will remember that at the end he said god bless you.
If you debate them have them prove their points using ONLY information found in the bible.
A lobster fed pastor shouldn’t talk about space or DNA because they are not mentioned in the bible
