Don't like them... My personal opinion is you need to sell/throw away all of these crappy speakers you showed here... I mean you are still young, don't do that to your ears :/ Also... a sub needs to be alone (and that's NOT a sub speaker... probably needs a bigger magnet) and 230hz is NOT bass (it's too close to the mid range.. try to get lower bass like 40-60hz). STOP playing them!!!!!!!!!!!! The foam surrounds around the woofers is rotted! That's why you are hearing noise when you push on it! They need to be refoamed before you continue using them. foam surround is extremely critical for voice coil suspension and alignment! The voice coil can be seriously damaged if repeated use with rotted foams!
the reason it this making those scratchy noises is because your supposed to put your fingers around the cone and push wich pushes the voice coil back into the magnet straight but if you push the side the speakers bends a bit and the side you puch moves more than the other side causing the voice coil to scratch the magnet o and that looks like a 15 inch :) o and pushing them wrong can sometimes damage them :)

I'll say it again since everyone has a wrong opinion. they are a 16" woofer. not a 15". and they were sold stand alone, not from rack systems however the quality is little better than a rack matched pair. I bought a pair of csg-404 back in 1994 for about $200 brand new at sears, still have the Pioneer manual in my files and the receipt(which I can't read anymore, but I stuck it in the paperwork.)
@yodigi101 there is such a thing, and you are looking at it. it's not common and that's why i'm trying to school you people on it. a 15 cannot be mounted in this box as a replacement. I wish the poster would hold a damn tape measure to it and come back here to tell you.
these are very uncommon, and I wish I still had mine. csg404 has a 16" 6ohm driver the systems 150watt 30-20KHZ response. search CS G404 at the ecoustics forum
@yodigi101 he read, or said it wrong. all I'm trying to do is clarify some misguided asumptions. if you don't want to listen, stop talking out your ass arguing with me.Pioneer claims they never made a csc404 so if you pulled a pair from the trash with the nameplate csc404 and woofer that measures 15" then I am prepared to offer you a nice price for them, email a photo to stretchnuts03 yahoo with photos of the speakers next to a measuring tape and the gold number plate. $300 sight unseen
Hate 2 rain on your parade but those big Pioneer speakers are kind of cheapos. They were sold as part of those old time rack systems from the 80's or early 90's. Most people looked at the 150 watt power rating and thought that was high but it's the ohms that determine that. 150 watts @ 6 ohms is equivalent to about 60-75 watts @ 8 ohms so if you connect them to a 100 watt per ch amp you'd fry em. That's why the magnets r so small as r the voice coils. But for $31 good find for a beginner.
those are 15's. the beach house i stay at in the summer has a pair of those. they are awesome! someone took really good care of them because usually when you see them for sale they are dry rotted to the point of no return.lol sweet speakers man
Pioneer, like some of the other speaker companys, used to make very good speakers. I have a pair of 15" Pioneers and they are fine . They have a pro line of speakers, TAD,or Technical Audio Devices, that are very good and very expensive. It seems after the golden age of HiFi, which ended in the 60's, when all of the tube amps ceased to exist, amps went transistor, or solid state, and speaker got cheap to go with the cheap amps. I like the vintage JBL and Altec Lancing, but they do cost. regards
I really like your Curious George waist basket. Do you want to trade for some good speakers? Don't push in the dust covers.sometimes they act like a high frequency diaphragm, and when you crush them, this might warp the voice coil, especially at high power. Then the speaker will blow. The bigger the magnet, the more power the speaker will handle. There is lots of information on the internet. You can learn about speakers. JBL has a site called Lancing Heritage. Lots of good info. Regards, Mark
Pioneer have never made a good sounding speaker - they all sound like tinny shit compared to Tannoy or Spender or any other British make for that matter !
I used to have those big pioneers. it's actually a 16" woofer. the mid/high clarity was great at reasonable volume, but the bass accuracy sucked because it's such a large paper cone. the large cone is also how they get away with such a small magnet and low excursion still producing big bass. I bought them from sears brand new around 1994 for $99 each.
Treat them well because the 16's are irreplaceable. served me well for years.
I have two of the same speakers at my house and you are right they sound amazing then i have one bar speaker and two other small speakers. i am using a pioneer cx 770 power amp hooked up to a pioneer cx770 tuner control amplifier it is beast and i can't even turn it up half way cause people will complain. but yes they are great speakers
I don't see any excursion. BTW, those are woofers, not subwoofers. That is why they have the small magnets. The woofers should be able to at least get up to 500hz.
HOLY SHIT...a frequency response of 30-20 hertz....how the hell does that work? Even if you write it from 20-30 hertz thats pretty epic. I guess the tweeter handles that 30 hz and the woofer goes down to 20hz. Im sorry for being an ass but that was just really funny. its 30 hz to 20000 hz (aka 20 khz). I would like to hear a speaker with a 20 to 30 hz frequency response though.
basically they would put a 15 inch cone on a 10 inch speaker. do not let power handling impress you since they usually lied about that anyway. plus a light bulb can handle 100watts but it puts out lousy sound. always remember that. old cheap speakers had crappy woofers, crappy mids and crappy paper tweeters. they were just for show to sell the systems. again, you seem like the cerwin vega type. look for a pair of D-7's or at 12's. they have nice excursion with nice looking orange surrounds
@lineartechbd1600 when you go on about watts its actualy a measurement eletrical power and also you could say a unit of heat and when a speaker says its 100watts rms its not what it can handle constantly because the speaker will melt. When an amp says its 100 watts rms its what the amp runs at all of the time but not what it sends out all of the time, its only there to cope with bass signals that need alot of power and it will only be for about a millisecond or so
@regulatorjc AKA DJEFFCLIVE.......you hide behind another name ...pathetic....lol!
your the troll boy........PEOPLE CHECK OUT THIS TWAT HOW HE FOLLOWS ME AROUND.......THIS PRICK TRYS TO GET PEOPLE TO TURN ON ME!!!...LOL! HE IS A FAKE DJ.......MY COMMENTS WAS FACT AND ANY NORMAL PERSON CAN SEE THAT..........YOUR DOING A GOOD JOB OF MAKING YOUR SELF LOOK LIKE A PRICK....YOU ARE SO ANGRY AND ITS SAMAZING YOU HAVE ALL OF THIS TIME ON YOUR HANDS BETWEEN YOU SCHOOL DISCO'S THAT YOU DO....LOL!
@lineartechbd1600 watch out for regulatorjc aka djjeffclive he is a troll and a hack.....check out his comments just click on his names and you see that this cretin is following me around y/t like a sheep on crack trying to get other people to fight his war????......to rehiliterate watch out for this prick.......the proof is out there for all to read
let me explain something to you since you are kind of young. back in the day companies like pioneer, technics, jvc etc used to make these cheap speakers to sell with component sets. they seemed to put the biggest flashiest looking speakers in the biggest box they could make. back in the day people used to think the bigger the better but that's not true. electronic companies generally made crappy speakers. try some cerwin vega vintage speakers.
They've been in the family since the late 80s and even as of this day (August, 2010) they are STILL in the living room doing their thing and I ENJOY the sound that comes out of it! Have fun!
Nice pickup especially for the money. A buddy in college had very similar Pioneers back in '92. Just hook em up and let them do their thing. They'll play loud and don't need to be babied.
Nice I got yamaha speakes at a garage sale that were huge to. About that scratch noise I had a old speaker that did that but it wasn't blown. I think it from the old stretching stuff being dryer out.
my god i have the same ones mine are 12" but did you get the origional receiver and amp? cuz if u didnt you arent getting the best performnce they are better when you have the origionals
They were a Best Buy special (cheap). They didn't really sound great on the low end, so I tried them in my S-10 Blazer, driven by a good old Rockford Fosgate Power 300. They handled the excess power very well (600 watts per chan. With very little distortion.) I think they are rated around 100 watts RMS. I'm not sure.
you love them speakers huh aloy of the time if you run them hard the wire that is inside will burn but the speaker will still play but sound quality will be lower because the speaker will drag because the wire expandes this is not fixable from the high wattage but you still got a good deal iif you want some good speakers make a deal with you r local pawn shop
dude, when you press on the side of the woofer cone, you are "twisting" the woofer making the voice coil rub.
try pushing the woofer in the middle but dont push the dust cap for you will push them in. if they still make the noise, check the foam surrounds. i have a pair of infinity speakers from 1997, they were $1000. when the foams rotted, the voice coil would rub. i re-foamed them, no more rubbing.
Youll just fuckin ruin those nice old 15' pioneers playing that overboosted shitbox music. Why does it always have to be about seeing how much abuse the drivers will take??! Whatever happened to seeing how clean and strong they play?
that other dual driver speaker you have is a center channel speaker for surround sound--
Woofer looks like a 12 or a 15. Very nice, I hope they serve you well. I have some boxes to some Pioneers some kid trashed the drivers. Oh well, nice project speakers for me to mod.
Well, atleast they work. I think I will mod mine, with all Dayton drivers. They will probobly have a dayton 12 innch woofer, 6 inch mid, and a Pioneer 3 inch tweeter.
hey Flub, good video of your PIONEER front speakers. I have 2 techinics front that r 240 @ 8 OHMS a Pinoeer center speraker that's @ 8 OHMS @ 125watts and 2 polk Audio speakers and a sony crappy sony subwoofer. i was thinking about adding 2 more speakers for 7.1 but my room isn't big enough lol tell me what u think of my speaker set up Kolerik
@MSNIMSM 15s homes. Almost all the cs brands have 15s. I have the cs-g403. The sound they make is the voice coil they are probably about 20 years old they gonna make that sound.
you should check out my video and like other people have said that sound is definately the voice coil going out i had a 150 watt cerwin vega sub in a self powered box and it made that noise shortly after it went out noow i got it replaced with a 400 watt 10 inch serwin vega sub in self powered box
nice buy man, the sound that the woofer makes when u push on it might be due to the voice coil starting to come unraveled if thats the case they might not last long :P and alil piece of info for ya the size of the magnent dosnt matter much sometimes companies use "big magnents" as a marketing ploy and can actually decrease the sound quality
well these aren't super expensive speakers but they aren't bad and you can get pretty good sound out of them but the bookshelfs are kinda cheap. I bet you can get some massive bass out of that 15". The guy below me is right though the magnet size doesn't really matter. That's a good buy though! Awesome, those big speakers would be cool for a party
i have the same speakers, (the CS-G404) and they are 15". they didnt rip you off by the smaller magnet, thats what they used back then. they are old speakers lol. and magnet size doesnt matter at all. watch out how you keep puting your fingers on the cone, that will seriously damage them lol. that noise was the voice coil scraping against the magnet. thats what happens when you push the cone in unevenly lol.
thats big man

when you push on it like that in makes the voice coil rub against the magnet wrecking it that the noise you hear.
The420juggalohatchet 1 year ago
All the pushing you've been doing on them, has probably scratched the voice coil, and it's STARTING to short...

that wierd sound you hear when pushin on it is cuz your causing the cone to go down uneavenly. the voice coil is rubbing the magnet or the pole piece

I would like to hear a speaker with a 20 to 30 hz frequency response though.
hamielec 1 year ago
The 15" woofer has very poor excursion and lowish Xmax. Around 4mm Xmax it is all the woofer has.

Get 6 Peavey CS 800 amps and hook three up to each side (2400 watts per side) Light them on fire while the tunes are cranked up!
But do it outside where you cant burn anything down
Sreewtyui 1 year ago
basically they would put a 15 inch cone on a 10 inch speaker. do not let power handling impress you since they usually lied about that anyway. plus a light bulb can handle 100watts but it puts out lousy sound. always remember that. old cheap speakers had crappy woofers, crappy mids and crappy paper tweeters. they were just for show to sell the systems. again, you seem like the cerwin vega type. look for a pair of D-7's or at 12's. they have nice excursion with nice looking orange surrounds
lineartechbd1600 1 year ago
@lineartechbd1600 when you go on about watts its actualy a measurement eletrical power and also you could say a unit of heat and when a speaker says its 100watts rms its not what it can handle constantly because the speaker will melt. When an amp says its 100 watts rms its what the amp runs at all of the time but not what it sends out all of the time, its only there to cope with bass signals that need alot of power and it will only be for about a millisecond or so

let me explain something to you since you are kind of young. back in the day companies like pioneer, technics, jvc etc used to make these cheap speakers to sell with component sets. they seemed to put the biggest flashiest looking speakers in the biggest box they could make. back in the day people used to think the bigger the better but that's not true. electronic companies generally made crappy speakers. try some cerwin vega vintage speakers.

I have the CS-303 model.
They've been in the family since the late 80s and even as of this day (August, 2010) they are STILL in the living room doing their thing and I ENJOY the sound that comes out of it! Have fun!

Oh man memories! I remember paying around $200 for the exact same pair of speakers at Remco (a rent-to-own place). I miss them so much!
There is nothing like the sound of a good tower speaker.
thegeekredneck 1 year ago
Nice pickup especially for the money. A buddy in college had very similar Pioneers back in '92. Just hook em up and let them do their thing. They'll play loud and don't need to be babied.

Nice I got yamaha speakes at a garage sale that were huge to. About that scratch noise I had a old speaker that did that but it wasn't blown. I think it from the old stretching stuff being dryer out.

Sorry but i can't see any excursion!
maybe you should try another amp man! This one seems to be a little weak!

I have those Pioneer speakers in a 10" and the 15" i blew the dust cap off so hard it hit me in my nuts.
YzBrad99 1 year ago
as far as excursion, it's the amplifiers lacking not the speakers. a good amp will practically throw those things out of its box.

lhasti 1 year ago
I bought a pair of those brand new in 1993-94.
I'm not sure.

thats a fifteen bro. the speakers not blown but it makes that noise because it has damage

I've got the fisher version of those big pioneers for $10 and they sound great I'm also going to add on a Sony woofer. What amp are you using?
Fgtguy 2 years ago
i got a pair of thoes that i got for free
sonycanadian 2 years ago
you love them speakers huh aloy of the time if you run them hard the wire that is inside will burn but the speaker will still play but sound quality will be lower because the speaker will drag because the wire expandes this is not fixable from the high wattage but you still got a good deal iif you want some good speakers make a deal with you r local pawn shop
waylan3 2 years ago
dude, when you press on the side of the woofer cone, you are "twisting" the woofer making the voice coil rub.
try pushing the woofer in the middle but dont push the dust cap for you will push them in. if they still make the noise, check the foam surrounds. i have a pair of infinity speakers from 1997, they were $1000. when the foams rotted, the voice coil would rub. i re-foamed them, no more rubbing.
cichlidkeeper89 2 years ago
Youll just fuckin ruin those nice old 15' pioneers playing that overboosted shitbox music. Why does it always have to be about seeing how much abuse the drivers will take??! Whatever happened to seeing how clean and strong they play?
that other dual driver speaker you have is a center channel speaker for surround sound--

Well, atleast they work. I think I will mod mine, with all Dayton drivers. They will probobly have a dayton 12 innch woofer, 6 inch mid, and a Pioneer 3 inch tweeter.

@MSNIMSM 15s homes. Almost all the cs brands have 15s. I have the cs-g403. The sound they make is the voice coil they are probably about 20 years old they gonna make that sound.
caddycoupe1021 1 year ago
@caddycoupe1021 I have had some with 12's. And I have speakers over 40 years old that make no sounds at all, just music.

@MSNIMSM I really like your Curious George waist basket. Do you want to trade for some speakers?
dadofshane 10 months ago
you should check out my video and like other people have said that sound is definately the voice coil going out i had a 150 watt cerwin vega sub in a self powered box and it made that noise shortly after it went out noow i got it replaced with a 400 watt 10 inch serwin vega sub in self powered box
dragon8223 2 years ago
i have full rage speaker like that but they are 380 watts
you can run them up to 4 times there rated power just turn down the bass so you dont blow the speakers
dnl5649 2 years ago
nice buy man, the sound that the woofer makes when u push on it might be due to the voice coil starting to come unraveled if thats the case they might not last long :P and alil piece of info for ya the size of the magnent dosnt matter much sometimes companies use "big magnents" as a marketing ploy and can actually decrease the sound quality
nicedude7 2 years ago
great speakers!
and the songs are great too!
its just a great vid lol
but you should have shown the inside of them

well these aren't super expensive speakers but they aren't bad and you can get pretty good sound out of them but the bookshelfs are kinda cheap. I bet you can get some massive bass out of that 15". The guy below me is right though the magnet size doesn't really matter. That's a good buy though! Awesome, those big speakers would be cool for a party
rileyswanson 2 years ago
i have the same speakers, (the CS-G404) and they are 15". they didnt rip you off by the smaller magnet, thats what they used back then. they are old speakers lol. and magnet size doesnt matter at all. watch out how you keep puting your fingers on the cone, that will seriously damage them lol. that noise was the voice coil scraping against the magnet. thats what happens when you push the cone in unevenly lol.
