  • @mouloudo You idiotic frog, the Italians had in 1933 a long-standing record of long range flights: 1920, Ferrarin-Masiero, Roma-Tokyo, 18,000 km = 11,000+ mi, 1927, DePinedo to New Orléans, 1932, Balbo, with 15 planes, to Brazil; 1933, Balbo again, with 24 flying boats, Roma-Chicago. Whom do you frogs have to compare, Blériot with jis trans-channel flight (and his plane had an ITALIAN Anzani motorcycle engine...) Now go eat some fried frog legs and swill them down with that rotgut, French wine.

  • Jeeze !! All you have to do is look at that aircraft to realiise the the lift to weight ratio was in the negative. A thousand gallons of fuel? Let's see, at 6 lps. per gallon, that's 6k pounds. That's a stretch for a multiple engine ship to leave the ground. They just don't do it!! And, yes, before you ask, I am a certifiide FAA air craft mechanic. =Stefan=

  • no kidding, the spirit of st louis didnt even have that much fuel, not half as much, and it barly got off the ground, and that flew from new your to france.

  • @angryace13 Maybe that was because the distance from Roosevelt Field, L.I., NY (NOT "new your"!!!) to Le Bourget airport, Paris, was about 1/2 of DePinedo's intended flight. Only an american could make a comment like this,

"My comment simplified for an Italian to understand", indeed... It seems you are rather prone to "typos", buster, maybe you better read carefully what you've written before you send it off. This one is not the only reason why your country is apt to be criticized. "Rude"? Truth never is rudeness... Am I "old enough to be on YT"? How about 82, which IS my age??!!!

    truth never is rude? what truth? a typo? thats the only real mistake i made in that one year old post was a typo, the only truth your telling us is that you like spending your time smashing people, and showing how much better you think you are than everyone ells! this is why you get so much criticism, and the last time i checked Italians made typos too, and i bet you have in the past, son don't send me this garbage your MR perfect...

IDK the airplane was heavily overladen... 1,000gallons of AV gas!! do you know how much weight that is, i can almost guarantee you that is close, to over the weight of that aircraft itself! thats in between 6,000 to 7,000LB of fuel aboard! simple comment, my comment simplified for a Italian to understand, there is no way in a fat freezing chance in hell that plane is getting off the ground!

  • At a certain point he must have lost control of the aircraft and went off the runway. His attempt to continue despite the reduced plane speed resulting from the uneven terrain made the rest.. RIP

  • i just finished reading the book written by de Pinedo back in 1926 after the Australia flight.

    very interesting.a true pionieer. shame he died so young.he was 43 at the time of the crash.

  • Whoa.. Can't imagine why he didn't abort the take off.. I go to Floyd Bennett Field whenever I'm in NYC and have a little time.. It's hard to imagine this happening in front of the administration building, it's such a peaceful place these days. Will think of this next time I'm there. Great video Bomberguy, keep 'em flying..

  • Bomberguy; I was wondering if you have ever heard of the Lithuanian flyers Darius & Girenus who took off from Floyd Bennett field right after Wiley Post in his Winnie Mae. They were trying to fly non-stop from New York to Vilnius and had only 400 km to go when they crashed in the storm. You seem to have so many newreel films, I know that they did film the take off. It was on july 15th, 1933 at 6:24AM EDT.

  • My guess is that the plane was either too heavy or wrongly balanced due to the extra fuel needed for the long flight to Baghdad.

    Surely he would have taken into account the weight of fuel he was carrying for such a long flight?

    Thats what I intitially thought but now not sure, it was all pretty unknown then and these pilots were always pushing the limits.

    Maybe the weight WAS too heavy but he thought he'd be able to get it off the ground ok.

    I cant beleive he panicked in the cockpit as some people suggest.

    I based my comments on the info that was given about what had occured before the flight and at his first attempt to get it airborne.

  • And you are right. In the early 30's the common record pilot had to be a little irresponsable. When i saw the video, my first feeling was related with adrenaline....I imagine myself trying to do on those years something risky in front of cameras and public....no reverse. I thing that's why so many extraordinary record pilots died.
