They were (are) brown/red laced, very pretty. But must be mixed, cuz the eggs aren't green. Lost one to a predator, sad to say. Love the sounds this breed makes, gurgle chup chup.
Building the coop into the front door porch was brilliant! No shortage of roosts or headroom in there, for sure. Great job, and you've got a great start with your eight beauties! I really enjoyed meeting them in their "home".
Thank you! I have fun building things. I don't do it very well, but as long as no one gets hurt...what the heck, right? Choice of the porch came from a wild bird nesting in there over the summer. Needed a better place for the growing chicks to winter than the stupid little cage I bought when I didn't know as much as I've learned by having/observing them.
They dive under the bushes, the car, into the shade anywhere. The warning noise they make for "bird overhead" sounds like aw-awk, almost like they're saying hawk. They travel from shadey spot to shady spot, evidently less visible in the darker bits. And some just disappear their protective colouration is so effective against the ground. knock on wood.
Your chickens look healthy and lively. I especially like the Ameraucanas with their ruffed necks! You should be getting some nice eggs as your flock matures. There's nothing like a homegrown egg over easy!
Speaking of birds, check out OverTheRaynbow, I think you'll like it!
We have many friends where we live that raise free range layer chickens. We buy most of our eggs from them. The homegrown eggs taste SO much better than any store bought ones. I think you'll really enjoy what your little friends are going to provide you!
Just a warning...be careful of foxes and coons. They can devastate an unprotected flock!
It is a bad rap. Chickens are pretty goofy and fun to have hanging around. Things that make them needfully frightened are hawks flying overhead, new things in the yard, odd looking humans (wearing a diff hat or shoes if your own birds) all of which can mean danger/death. Some do sound like they are complaining, or worrying, like "oooh, i don't know, i don't know, oooh". Which sorta sounds like they are "chicken".
It's good to see you. My wife threatens ocassionally that she wants chickens. Enjoyment aside, is it economical compared to just buying your eggs. (I assume your not going to eat the chickens since you named them.)
Actually it is, esp if you have space for them to range. They are eating grass, weeds, bugs, as well as the organic feed they get in a feeder. They also get a boffo mixture of seeds and grains I mix as "scratch", fun to feed them as a treat and as a way to keep them from thinking you are "scarey". The eggs are supposed to be much better looking, tasting, nutritionally more rounded than factory or store-bought ones.
Really big fence. Started out for the deer so I could have a garden, then turned out to be great for keeping out all the ground traffic down to a pretty small size. Also I lock them up at night in secure coop built into the front door porch.
aww thats so sweet i love chickens we have a lot too :) great video :D

I see you have Ameraucanas, but what kind? Those look like they're mixed. I have two kinds of Ameraucanas: Wheaten and Blue Wheaten.

the brown ones with ear muffs I have never seen before. how do you guard against hawks in such open countryside?

Do you find that chickens are really "chicken". Or is that a bad rap.
