I am glad people like perry. but his time has come and gone. Journey has Arnel and he was picked by one of thier founding members neal schon. Arnel is doing fine
They dynamic that's missing is Gregg Rolie's songwriting. Jon Cain is really good, but he is bubble-gum pop. Gregg Rolie was blues-rock-jazz.
The Frontiers album wouldn't have been as popular without Escape, which couldn't have been made without the foundations laid by the previous four studio albums featuring Steve Perry, Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie.
I have seen Journey Countless times since late 70's Great band Period.
Not to make comparison however Arnel is a good singer, although in my opinion there is something missing in my mind its the feel of the music that dynamic feel of the 80's or something hard to put into words; its like when Perry took over from Greg Rollie you went wow what a difference! That missing dynamic is hard to replace.
i must correct imagineart...steve perry sang this song....greg rolie sang vocals/duet with steve perry on "some day soon" from the departure album..on this song he played harmonica
Rolie sang it, but in usual Santana form, he doesn't sing. His credit is his guitar. Like asking if Santana sang the song with the lead of Matchbox 20...Santana is a player and a composer...NOT a singer.
LOVE THIS SONG!! Seems I haven't heard it in over two decades? Reminds me of Supertramp with the harmonica! Love the classic Journey songs....I also preferred Rolie over Cain.
The best song ever and best album ever! This is what Journey was all about! It brings back precious memories of my High school years when I fell in luv with Journey.
any one know why through the course of their career, Journey always had the wierdest album covers? I've spent hours staring. They seem to tell a story that I can't figure out, like an x file.
It is a pattern of a story spanning through Frontiers, gets dropped with Raised on Radio, and picks back up later, with Arrival as far as I can see. It is about a people who come about, are infinite (have no death), depart, get captured, escape and move on to new frontiers. The scarab is their vehicle for travel. If you look at their pre-Perry albums, they are also very space-age, kinda Star-Trekky.
I have to agree. The symbol for Infinity (sideways figure 8) is almost always there. But, even with the scarab, they incorporate the infinity symbol somewhere in the artwork. POST-Perry, though, I have absolutely no idea. I don't like Pineda, Period.
It's all Egyptian belief-based. I wear my multi-stoned scarab bracelet with hyroglyphs on the back daily. When I figured out the whole album story about 25 years ago, I got the bracelet. It just rocks, the whole theme. Anyone know who's idea the theme was?
I like Pineda...he definitely has pipes. Is he copying Steve Perry? Of course...Perry was, is, and will always be the originator. But Arnel can sing no doubt. For that matter I liked Steve Augeri too...one of my all time fave songs is "Higher Place" off Arrival. Augeri and Pineda can both sing...but what is truly and sadly lacking now is Steve Perry's incredible songwriting! All in all Perry is absolutely the best. But Neil and the boys picked Arnel and now he's the guy (Unless Perry Came back!)
That is too true. Arnel and to an extent Augeri were/are both copying the sound of Perry. Does Arnel sing well? Of course he does...he has a great range, clarity, and projects it well. But it's still a copy of Perry. If you've heard a bunch of his stuff with The Zoo in the Philippines he does a pretty decent job of Freddie Mercury as well. But again....while the singing is arguably great...it's still copying Perry or Mercury's sound. IMHO
I will also doe a Journey fan, but I am not a big fan of all of their incarnations. I am almost, ALMOST ready to declare this linep as my favorite, but it's nearly a toss-up with Cain replacing Rolie. Nothing against Cain, but his addition seems to almost be the last nail in the bluesy-Journey coffin, and the advent of more pop and ballads.
One of these "versions' is not really "BETTER" than the other - both are great, but they are just different.
Chasing a thread, tied up in strings, resounding chords~ Echoes~ Time unfolding, time collapsing, harmonized dancing in the eye of the hurricane~ she stops~ *Here* This simply took my breath away. Much gratitude & respect for sharing this... thank you. With a smile from ~magik.
Thanks, It's nice to know some people like it, I was just jamming and making different sound, but after 25 years, it's starting to come more natural, I'm a slow learner...hi hi hi, I love Journey with Neil on the guitar.
Departure album is special to me...first time I saw Journey live was on the Departure "1900 tour," and still have the t-shirt that I bought..lol. Hey, does anybody have a live version of this song? I know they performed it live through out the entire tour.
Wow I really like this song. This is one of my many favorites of the departure album. His voice is really strong and he gives it that tough sound. I loved when he sang like this. Is he talented or what?
2nd favorite journey Song. fucking EPIC album (Departure)

Of course AP sounds like SP on S/JRNY songs, he was a cover band singer for 20 years. The second he steps off the Dirty Dozen, though, he's Arnel.

Steve, Neal, Gregg, Ansley ( and Steve S. ) and Ross had a magic that will never be duplicated.
These early songs were just the best.

Which is why, by late 1981, Journey was the biggest selling group of the 80s. Three albums released in just over two years.
Boy, how the music industry has changed from that formula!!
