This Opera should have a revival in 2016 for the Met at Lincoln Center's 50th anniversary! It was the first Opera ever performed there with Justino Díaz and Leontine Price in the leading roles.
Just to add a note of reality here for those of you who have never sung anything like this. I sang Antony to her Cleopatra in 1976 in our full university production, she was 24 when she did the entire role, and yes, the role is one of the most taxing, with exhausting leaps the entire 3 act opera. She was incredible then, and his video 16 years attests to her gift, intelligence, and longevity. Brava, honey, you still have a long way to go!
Are you guys kidding? I appreciate her middle voice, but she's a SOPRANO: and she makes an ugly sound above a "G" at forte -- end of story. (Not to mention it's all one color.) Barber is the star here and let no one forget it.
So successful singing is only about making a beautiful sound? Come on. Not to sound like one of the freaks that think she could do no wrong, but Callas proved that to be untrue. That would be incredibly boring. I never thought there was anything wrong with this voice. I saw her live as Tosca and she brought the house down, vocally and dramatically. The top was great even then. But, to each his own I guess.
A GREAT night for her! The voice is pouring out, it's beautiful, and it's on the breath!!!! Are we hearing this kind of singing at the MET right now? I'd say NOT! This was also the night that Leontyne was the hostess........ So Carol gets extra points for being amazing under pressure.
In her prime, Vaness was quite a singer. This particular aria and role was written for leontyne, and tailored to the amazing things that only she could do with that unbelievable voice. Very few other singers can do it well...
Samuel Barber would have absolutely adored this woman.

Not since Leontyne has a soprano sounded so glorious in this aria! There have been a couple that have tried.....

Je suis un admirateur sans limite de Carol
Dès qu'elle chante je ressens un bonheur immense
une plénitude extrème
Très peu de cantatrices ont cette capacité là

lol is that a costume? Is it leather? Give her a whip and she'd be an opera dominatrix.
The singing is fantastic, so really she can wear what she likes..but...wow.
