Alaskan Malamutes shed a LOT. You'll find hair and fur all over your clothing, upholstery, carpeting, under your furniture, on your countertops -- even in your food. Frequent vacuuming will become a way of life. Make sure you're REALLY up for this.
I love the wold look of these dogs. Ive never had a dog before but I have a maine coon cat and I love the wild look of them. When Im older I want to have a malamute. They are so beautiful.
My 7 month old is 100 lbs already. Yes, LOTS of exercise or else you are just asking for all kinds dysplasia. Also, don't let them sleep on concrete very often.
I have a Malamute, and he is wonderful around children. Malamutes are gentle by nature but they're extremely hard to train. Keep in mind that they are HUGE dogs.
well dj80s im getting an akita puppy and the guy that breeds them used to have malamute that seemed to get on fine with his akitas but one day for no particular reason the malamute savagley killed one of his akitas then tried to eat the carcas but some malamutes are good lol
Malamutes, along with other working dogs, need a lot of attention and they need to do "jobs" - things that keep them occupied. A lot of people don't realize this. That is why Malamutes and other working dogs can get unpredictable and mean. Its NOT their fault. People should own working dogs only if they have enough space for the dog, enough time and inclination to spend with the dog, and knowledge about working dogs in general.
What a majestic dog! I've been thinking about getting one myself but I've read some negative temperment traits about them.
How hard are they to train? Are they really as stupborn as books/websites make them out to be? And are they really that killer agressive to smaller animals?
Yes, Mals are hard to train, simply because they're highly intelligent and they're *not* pushovers. If the dog doesn't respect you, it'll do what it wants every time. If it does respect you, you'll have much more success, but it's not guaranteed.
They do have a prey drive, but when raised with smaller animals, it's usually okay *if the smaller ones were there first*. This also does not guarantee the safety of any new smaller animals introduced at a later stage, though each dog is different. This prey drive is necessary so that they can survive in the harsh, cold conditions for which they're built. Out there in the snow, who knows when your next meal will be? If it's food, eat it now.
Outside of that, though, they are amazing animals and I wouldn't have any other breed since having my Mal. They're their own dog, and a real part of the pack - not just a dog that you can have to do tricks for your own amusement. They are a family member, not just a pet. You can never truly "own" a Mal.
Seriously, these are like the best dogs ever. We got two puppies, one was named Wolf and the other we named Timber (My brother was like 10 and I was 12) and we lost wolf unforcently to Parvo Virus (missed his shot by like a month.) and he died. Timber is 12 1/2 now and I love him with all my heart, he's a great dog. As long as you have enough room for them to roam and time to take care of them they are amazing dogs.

They look so much like Huskies with the fur colour, but a Malamute's face is a lot bigger and more wolf-like, unless this is a hybrid.
