If Debussy had been born Catalan, he would have written music such as this. This is magical music....Ravel is there, as is Poulenc....but the sound is all Mompou....I'm in love with this composer's work....you should be, as well. Check out Jonathan Plowright's new disc "Hommage a Chopin": it will mesmerize and bewitch you....he interprets Mompou like no one else....
Hough is such a wonderful artist, which is clear from the delicate and thoughtful peformance in this encore. When you can get thousands of people out of doors to sit quietly through a gentle number like this at the end of a concert, you're a special talent.
ive watched this video 3 times and i'm still amazed to see him pull this off. it is a beautiful piece of course, but i think of mompou's music as "small" and to see it performed in a huge stadium is almost ironic. but somehow it works. more power to hough and mompou both.
Yes, perhaps so. But not to be cynical, someone right next to you on the bus might be "speaking simply" but that doesn't mean you're listening. This says as much for the inability to judge a book by its cover. And is also a lesson that strict dress codes for attendance of classical music concerts do not necessary mean the ears are in working order. It's as heartening to see the reaction at the end as it is to hear this beautiful performance.
Yes agree with that. What ever is played or said no matter how dazzling the delivery this is no guarantee that the 'other' listens. My point is that when one makes the effort to simplify and clarify the message and speak quietly about your truth from a place of vulnerability...you can touch an audience in a very profound way.
This lovely piece, brilliantly played by the wonderful Hough, I first heard years ago in the transcription for violin played by the tragic and marvelous Michael Rabin, the clever fourths played with such perfect intonation.
That's the touch! Like Kempff touching a white dove.

Stephen Hough didn't look well in this video though - he had a very unusual pallor.

You can literally hear the birds chirping as he is playing this. He had the audience in the palm of his hand. Great performance!

It is a lesson that when we speak simply and quietly from the depths of our hearts we touch the universe.......

what style is this beautiful music?

impressionism

Impressionist though in the case of Mompou he was a bit of a late comer. He was in the same basket as Debussy, Ravel and Satie.

I watched him play this tonight. Much as I wonder why he has to play the same encore twice, he does play it well.

Mompou's music is for the soul - so profound - and Steven Hough plays it beautifully!

This is good but the recording by Guiomar Novaes from the 30's of this tune is amazing.
