Air filter should stop most of the sand from getting in the air intake. After driving for a while in it your filter would become severally clogged. At that point, you might have some engine issues. You would get a while before it became a problem though..

Wow, my country. I never knew it was such a big desert known for it's sandstorms. Man I couldn't imagine driving through that. Yes the engine breaking down is one thing, a collision is another, but also what of a random wild animal. If you hit some big animal, only your front is busted but someone from behind might not see you in time. That's just awful. Truely terrifying looking but yet so interesting.
