That is the key segment that sells Lombardo. It should be Murphy's segment (and he is an excellent guitarist who brings his all there), but Lombardo robs him of the album's highlight sequence with some of the better snare work you will ever hear...and the irony is that Lombardo is generally regarded as a bass drum wizard. Murphy is left sounding like he is supporting Lombardo, and not the reverse.

How Lombardo steals this song without becoming musically conspicuous is beyond me.

One of the many many cool things about TestAment is Chuck Billy's vocal styles that he deploys with such grace and ferocity. Unlike most thrash metal bands today that almost constantly go "cookie monster" on the lead vocals, Chuck uses a lot more range that most took for granted and/or overlooked in their early days. Chuck can go from melodic and eery to all out growl and force and it all blends and sounds amazingly cool and gives their music way more depth than most.

That's not what I meant. There are no subgenres of thrash strictly, though there were regional scenes with their own sounds. (like Bay Area, Germany, LA, etc.)

I guess you use 'cookie monster' as a term for the more rough thrash vocals, while in general use it always refers to death metal vocals like CC, Nile use.

And yeah, Chuck Billy is capable of multiple vocal styles.

As for the subgenres, they are good for ROUGH categorizing so that people know what you're talking about.

Although sub genres help us all categorize and or find our music better, it becomes more cloudy because so many bands mix things up to be dynamic and not sound droning and one style minded. While I understand the sub genres purpose as aforementioned, I still see most genres of thrash to all be basically thrash to keep it simple. As the old analogy goes - "KISS it! - Keep It Simple Stupid" \m/MOSH\m/

Battles that I believe kept them from enjoying the huge spotlight like Metallica got. They deserved that spotlight just as much, if not more, in my humble opinion. I brought a TESTAMENT album many years ago (Practice What You Preach) and although I thought it was ok, I never listened to TESTAMENT afterwards. I recently read reviews on this album, and being a massive SLAYER and Lombardo fan I gave it a listen. Can't believe how good this album is. I have a whole new respect for TESTAMENT and can understand why they are one of the big 4 This is now one of my favorite thrash albums.
