I believe Nobusuke Kishi was the Prime Minister. Students were protesting because he organised a vote in the parliament without the opposition parties and the US-Japan Mutual Security Treaty was passed.

Even my father can't remember much, he was too young then?

I don't believe so. They had permission to demonstrate. I didn't see any wounded.

Brother Michael: That really takes me back! The Zengakuren Student Federation in Japan staged protests against the visit by President Eisenhower using the technique of running in waves on the street. It was very difficult for the riot police to stop or control.

I was not there. I have never been to Japan, but in USA a radical student group tried to use the same tactic at a demonstration against nuclear weapons, and I did attend that.

NYC cops are far less gentle than Tokyo police, and the demonstration was forcibly broken up.
