  • so this happend under british rule right... so this is how hong kong grew...

  • @ukusapillage STFU. under british rule majority of people lived like that. 2nd tier citizens to the evil whitey.

  • if i was in hong kong i would give money to themmm!

  • honestly, I feel for the "poor" anywhere but these guys have it made compared to those who fit under "absolute poverty" in the vast majority of the world. Perfect doesn't exist you dolts. The place was almost as bad as subsaharan africa a generation ago. It's obvious (to me, at least) that laissez fairre has proven itself the best policy for the developing world. For the developed, well, it might be worth a try.

  • unbelievable... the man is so consumed with greed, that human life has a value of ZERO, unless it is capitalized upon through blood sweat and tears of hard labour and nothing but complete stripping of dignity, spirituality or hope of any sort in return..... this makes me sick, sick to my stomach... we are bound to NEVER make it as a species, doom is inevitable.

  • typo error of previous posting- I meant that Singapore's flatted housing of people may "NOT be Perfect" in the eyes of Western countries but. its MIRACLE HOUSING policy

has turned a slump city (left behind by same culprit BRITAIN) into an excellently MANAGED estate - people live with dignity.

BTW- I'm not singaporean. Observation is objective and fair

  • ask the govt to visit Singapore to find out how it managed to empower people and orchestrated the highest % of home ownership in the world. ITS A MIRACLE IN HOUSING POLICY for all. It may be the WESTERN countries idea of "perfect" housing but people are more purpose-driven when BASIC own SHELTER dream can be found.

MAKE A CALL NOW! or better still GO THERE PERSONALLY and see the MIRACLE OF HOUSING PEOPLE IN DIGNIFIED MANNER.

  • TAKE A GOOD HARD LOOK AT EARTH 2020

  • This is happening in west too but much slower. Factory workers lost their jobs to Chinese lot faster in Hong Kong than they do in west. In west we are not going to lose all the factory jobs, but we are eventually going to lose highly educated jobs as well.

  • At least in hong kong the poor still have jobs

  • This is so old. Hong Kong gives benefits to poor people, and gives them healthcare and education for their children.

  • @adeafningsilence It's still happening. Nothing really changed. Read the local news please. Not everyone lives at the mid-levels.

Yes, HK has social welfare, but please tell me how a person can survive with the unemployment assistance~HKD3000 (USD 400) a month in HK? There is a long queue for public housing. A "Decent" apartment (~a 3 sq. meter room with toilet) costs at least HKD 3000 a month to rent.

Even if they choose to work, menial labor at best, we still don't have min. wage.

  • @nathananise

Well they're not living in the street are they? And minimum wage has been approved recently, I read the local news - I just bother to consider the bigger picture They have food on their table, fantastic healthcare (public healthcare in hong kong is one of the best in the world) and great (but strenuous) education despite being unemployed. So please spare me that Hong Kong's poor suffer so much. Go to Africa, even SA and visit the camps there- that is real poverty.

  • @adeafningsilence Ur committing false comparison. How can you compare HK with those (semi) failed states in Africa/South America? e.g., you can't survived on 5 USD a day in Norway but in rural China. As Par the min. wage bill, yes, there is a bill requiring min. wage but no concrete number yet. we are asking for ~4.5usd/Hour but it's facing immense opposition. Bussiness asks for ~3 USD/Hour, which is not enuff to survive in HK. Public nfrastructure wise, HK's top notch but only this is not enuf

  • As a Hong Konger, I find this depiscable. this video was made in the 1990s. Take a look at that woman's hair.

  • man, this really makes me hope that there is not gonna be reincarnation ... if i wake up in a friggin cage after i die - with yellow skin and an eternally small dick - then i am gonna fuckin kill myself. or learn kung fu, maybe ... man am i glad to be a middle class white trash lowlife - definitely beats the cage ...

  • brabra...ism is all the same enslavement system, communism, socialism, capitalism, corporate fascism. the rulers and rich don't care poor people. this is the human history everywhere on the earth. humans are more stupid than dinosaurs. soon we'll all die of our greed and stupidity.

  • When big corporations take up all the real estates in Hong Kong, the monopoly effect will force the younger people to go into poverty. The poor will have no chance at all while the cost of living continue to rise and business leases skyrocket. I believe the communist government need to step in ASAP to enforce minimum wage and tax these real estate giants to help the disadvantage. It's getting out of hand.

  • communist gov ? they will probably beat up these poor people when they go on riot and cover up for the big corporation as it's probably one of their own

  • @ayamkampung Except that the "big corporation" is bringing modernity and economic growth to China.

  • this video was made ten years ago. Nowadays the housing problem still exist , and even become more serious. ....What development does hk have after it is returned to China?

  • Just one more thing. Hong Kong people seems losing family values. This phenomenon is very impaacting to teenagers and younger people because this is the time when they need support.

    Can somebody explain why?

  • From the accents of the Cage ppl interviewed, I would guess some of them are Taishan ethnicity or even Hakka (Kejia?). And of course, some of them are just plain Cantonese from GuangDong.

  • 李卓人was young.. haha

  • You should feel sorry for them, but the problem is that they just don't care that you care. I've experienced it, some are really ungrateful and feel you owe them everything!

That's the issue with locals vs ABCs/Gueilos

  • I think a lot of it is down to attitude and language. If you don't come over all patronising and actually speak (or at least understand) the local language then you'd fare a lot better. Fact is nobody poor wants your pity, but rather respect for their dignity. If you want instant gratitude for merely deigning to pay them some attention, then sorry, but you should haul your charity dilettante ass elsewhere. And that goes whether you're dealing with the first world poor or the third world poor.

  • yeah. same with my folks

  • Just one more message.

Because of the spread of individualism and opportunitism in Hong Kong, seldomly familiy members in hong Kong will help one another.

I don't know the reason behind???

  • if I am one of this people, I would choose to go back to China and live in dignified way. This is because homehold expense is much cheaper.

Sorry for the apelling, English is not my first language!!

  • Yes, I know what you mean. I'm not sure which is worse. To live in China's countryside without running water or to live like one of these Cage People. But looks like China's gov't is investing in infrastructure in Western China. Perhaps the countryside won't be so bad later on. I was just a kid when I was in HK, I kinda remember that not all of HK was glitzy and fun. Of course, I left there when I was 6 yrs of age.

  • Nowdays, many country-village in China has the basic living facility. Eg, clean water, TV, washing mechine. the living standard is much less than in Hong Kong.

  • so you're saying you'd rather be a Cage person than live in China's outer provinces?

  • to: danpt2000

No, in reverse, I want to live in China if I am poor.

I mean that China's cost of living is much less than that in hong Kong.

  • no way , let's move out of hong kong together

mainland want to engulf us , ok just give it to communist

and i would just go to the africa , i think i would be happier there

  • To: aaaaq27

Yes, so am I, espacially money is everything in Hong Kong.

P.S. Without $, you cannot even have a "warm family" (this is real).

  • This is characteristic of Capitalism and "Free Trade". Amercan/European leaders will tell peoples of the world that it is the best Economic system. But best for who? American citizens have been indoctrinated since Grade School to embrace Capitalism, but ppl rarely talk about the excess and evils of Capitalism: Environmental Pollution, Unequal Wealth Distribution, Urban Workers Slums...Ppl talk about boom in Mainland China, but shes facing problems of Capitalism today.

  • depend where in china... if u live in the heart of beijing CBD.. then the cost is crazy... much higher than in the US

  • but if u live in some distant country side.. then its dirt cheap

  • To: warset

Yes, of course. If I am those cage home people, I will go back to some rural area and open a small shop.

At least, I can have some respect as a human being.

  • @applesweeter You have a western set of mind. If those people agree to live in those cages, im pretty sure their homes in rural area are not much better...Im pretty sure they are moving because of the employment.

  • i can quite sure when the time you left hongkong ,

here was still not belongs to china yet .

you don't understand how hongkong changed

    after returning to china

  • wow

i grew up in hong kong when i was younger

i guess i was at the wealthy end of the scale but i had no idea how all these people lived

it feels terrible knowing that you have lived such a fulfilling life while all around you people are living in these condtions

also, are any white people in hong kong lower class, or are they all extremely wealthy??

    .

  • Most are probably the business elites, which includes Europeans, Americans, Japanese, and Koreas.

  • there's a few caucasian hoboes here and there. one was in the news yesterday. he begged for money, and someone took a picture. He grabbed her camera and smashed it. Most are business elite. But some. . . just lose their way i guess

  • I was originally from HK also, before the 1997 handover. Its not only in HK you see ppl like that suffer - no dignity, no money etc... Its mainland as well. Where is the family assistance the David Chu spoke of at the end of this vid? The Wealthy elites of the entire world are colluding with each other. Hundreds of $ billion Made in China goods flow into USA each year b4 global financial crisis. Who makes out like a bandit at the end? The Big business owners of course.

  • @annaisonthemoon There aren't really. Generally because the major of white families are expats and earn a lot. And if they ever had trouble they'd move back to where they once lived. Not all of them are extremely wealthy of course, my mother is white and dad's Chinese and we aren't extremely wealthy but we do live in a house and have a reasonable income.

  • @annaisonthemoon If you grew up in Hong Kong, I'm assuming you're a HK resident. The living conditions of the cages and tight spaces are more so of mainlanders coming down and expecting the government to give them whatever they need. Public housing is great in Hong Kong - if you're a citizen/perm. resident.

  • Excellent as always, guys.

    Pity about the subtitles, though.

  • Why this guy wants to stay in his cage?

This life seems to be hard, but when I look old people here in Europe, they often live alone and a suffering from loneliness. The more the state cares for his people, the lesser people help each other, cos they are expacting the state to do this. But in any cas these men worked hard and society should be thankful and take care!

  • The president of HK is the most fuck up man ever, he fuck up HK. What a shame.

  • It sucks how majority of journey man pictures don't really translate when people aren't speaking english. Since I do understand cantonese you can ask me if you want to know any part.

  • yeah i live in HK, there is a huge poverty gap and poverty is widespread.

  • is it still like this 10 years later..have somthing change?

  • won´t you go on with your story abaut Hong Kong? It´s interessting and I must bring some information about it to school

  • why did i get thumbs down? Sometimes truth is essential for progress.

  • You need subtitles.

  • Subtitles would help alot...

  • Men living in cages?!?

Pretty fucking tragic if you ask me.

C'mon Hong Kong, pull your socks up!

  • ironic when hong kong has the most jaguar vehicles per capita in the world.
