Pierrefonds is like the perfect classic image of the fairy tale castle! With it's many towers, it's in a forest in the middle of a village. France has got to be the one country in all Europe that has the most castes (chateaux). Pierrefonds and Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, Germany, are my favorite castles but France with it's forests, villages and castles in the Loire Valley is my dream country..love France!
THe project of the castle GUEDELON is in Burgondy, in the forest. People who are interested in it can also work there : everybody is passionate there. Some manuel workers are ther for 2 weeks, 2 months, some others for ... 10 years ! The end of the construction will be in about ...15 years !!!
Château Gaillard is a ruin today. But we can see the "maquette".
One exceptional event can be interested for everybody" in love" with the Middle Age :
THE CASTLE OF GUEDELON . It is a foolish idea but so great ...
The aim is to built (entirely !) one castle as in the 12 -13 th centuries (60 meters /70 meters ), exactly as they do at this old period : historical composition, the same materials, the same technics (only hands ! No modern engines ...) . Very simple, but so hard... .
All of these old catles can be seen on internet (pictures ) .
But I think that you can search the others which are hidden... if you have time ...! Some are interesting , beautiful often, but aren't so much famous than others. And if you go there , the owners are so happy to have some persons interested in their "old stones" . To keep them safety and secure , it costs very much money, indeed ...
-Sedan (North France, Champagne- Ardennes). It is considered as the most important (or one of the 2 most important medieval castles in Europe).Napoleon The III th was in prison there, after the war of 1870 against the German.
-Blandy les Tours (near Paris-1H, 13 th) Interesting too.
-Provins ( south Paris -1h 30, not a castle but a big around wall and a charming town)
-Aigues Mortes (South W. of France) .The big wall too and the indoor. From this place, the king Louis 9 th went to the crusades!
-Sagonne (in the Cher, between Bourges and Moulins, 12 th to 15 th). One of the owners was the architect of Versailles : Jules Ardouin Mansart : He prefered a "house" not as sophisticated as the palace of LOUIS the XIV th !!! Around : a charming natural village , well conserved as in the Middle Age.

We can find in france many pieces of walls, many towers, donjons (dongeons ?) built during the 11 th and 12 th centuries... As near Carcassonne :
-Aguilar
-4 châteaux de Lastours
But we also can see complete or repaired castles, like they were in the Middle Age (built between the 12 th and the 15 th centuries ).
This list is not complete, but this is some other old castles.

NO, IT ISN'T ONE OF THE OLDEST IN FRANCE ... ! Actually, we can see some castles which were built several centuries before...

Would love for you to name some so we can check them out next time we go. Thanks for the comment!
